Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manhattan is a Lutheran church located at 164 West 100th Street just east of Amsterdam Avenue, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It was founded in 1888 as the German Evangelical Lutheran Church to serve German immigrants moving into the Upper West Side. It initially held services in a storefront until money had been raised to buy land and build a sanctuary.The double-height brick and stone masonry church building was constructed in 1908, and was designed by George W. Conable in the Gothic Revival style. In the 1950s, the building was slated for demolition as part of Robert Moses' urban renewal program, but the parish resisted and eventually, after 10 years, won the battle. It became the only structure within 32 acres (13 ha) in its neighborhood not to have been razed by Moses. On September 26, 2009, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mikell's was a jazz club on the corner of 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, in New York City. Run by Mike Mikell and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York's top studio and session musicians, who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city. Paul Shaffer, bandleader for CBS's Late Show with David Letterman, called Mikell's "soul heaven".Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell's in the 1970s.Writer James Baldwin's brother David worked as a bartender at the club in the 1970s and 1980s, thereby attracting patronage from Baldwin as well as other authors, including Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou, and musician friends such as Art Blakey, Roy Ayres and Wynton Marsalis.

St. Michael's Church is a historic Episcopal church at 225 West 99th Street and Amsterdam Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City. The parish was founded on the present site in January 1807, at that time in the rural Bloomingdale District. The present limestone Romanesque building, the third on the site, was built in 1890–91 to designs by Robert W. Gibson and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The church building also is noted for its Tiffany stained glass and its two tracker-action pipe organs built in 1967 by the Rudolph von Beckerath Organ Company (Hamburg, Germany); the church has fine acoustics. In addition to traditional Anglican services, St. Michael's has services and prayer groups influenced by the emerging church movement. Sale of air rights that enabled the building of The Ariel allowed St. Michael's to finance a major building restoration.On April 12, 2016, the church, parish house and rectory were designated landmarks by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.In 2020, it reported 633 members, average attendance of 200, and $756,631 in plate and pledge income.

99th Street was a local station on the demolished IRT Ninth Avenue Line in Manhattan, New York City. It had 2 levels. The lower level was built first and had two tracks and two side platforms and served local trains. The upper level was built as part of the Dual Contracts and had one track that served express trains that bypassed this station. It opened on June 21, 1879 and closed on June 11, 1940. The next southbound stop was 93rd Street. The next northbound stop was 104th Street.

Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School is a New York City public alternative high school located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Known for many years simply as "West Side High," it was renamed in honor of the school's longtime principal following his unexpected death in 2001.

The Metro Theater is a New York City movie theater, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at 2626 Broadway between 99th and 100th Streets. An example of Art Deco architecture of New York City, it opened in 1933 and closed in 2005.

96th Street is a major two-way street on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side sections of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It runs in two major sections: between the FDR Drive and Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side, and between Central Park West and Henry Hudson Parkway on the Upper West Side. The two segments are connected by the 97th Street transverse across Central Park, which links the disconnected segments of 96th and 97th Streets on each side. 96th Street is one of the 15 hundred-foot-wide (30 m) crosstown streets mapped out in the Commissioner's Plan of 1811 that established the numbered street grid in Manhattan. On Manhattan's West Side, 96th Street is the northern boundary of the New York City steam system, the largest such system in the world, which pumps 30 billion pounds of steam into 100,000 buildings south of the street. (The northern boundary on the East Side is 89th Street.)

The Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church is a parish church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York located at 207 West 96th Street at the corner of Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1900 and was designed by Thomas H. Poole in the Gothic Revival style. The parish was under the administration of the Franciscans for 30 years, between 1990 and 2020. The parish has an attached elementary and middle school, as well as a community center on West 97th Street. On May 8, 2015, the parish was merged with that of St. Gregory the Great. The Church of St. Gregory the Great was deconsecrated and closed on June 30th, 2017.

The Ariel East and Ariel West are a pair of apartment buildings on either side of Broadway at 99th Street, the tallest buildings on Manhattan's predominantly residential Upper West Side. Ariel East is at 2628 Broadway, and West is at 245 West 99th Street. When proposed in 2005, the Ariel stirred intense controversy in the upscale residential neighborhood that had believed zoning laws precluded the construction of buildings over 16 stories in height. Ariel East is 396 ft (121 m), and Ariel West is 340 ft (100 m). Construction was completed in 2007.

Ohab Zedek, sometimes abbreviated as OZ, is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Manhattan, New York City noted for its lively, youthful congregation. Founded in 1873, it moved to its current location on West 95th Street in 1926. The current clergy are: Rabbi Allen Schwartz, Senior Rabbi and Rabbi Jack Varon, assistant Rabbi.

On January 4, 2024, a New York City Subway train derailed causing at least 26 people, mostly passengers, to suffer minor injuries. The incident happened when the first car of a 1 train, both consisting of R62A’s, collided with a disabled train that had been vandalized, just north of the 96th Street station. Around 300 people were evacuated off the train involved in the collision.The National Transportation Safety Board, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and other authorities are investigating the incident. They stated that the disabled train, which was heading uptown, had been taken out of service because a passenger repeatedly pulled the emergency brake, resulting in the train being stalled near West 79th Street. That train was taken out of service, and the moving train, which was trying to bypass the stalled train using the express track, hit it while switching to the local track.
