Ruhr University Bochum

The Botanischer Garten der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (13 hectares), also known as the Botanischer Garten Bochum, is a botanical garden maintained by the Ruhr University Bochum. It is located at Universitätsstraße 150, Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and open daily without charge. The garden was founded in 1968 and subsequently has been continuously expanded and improved. It opened to the public in 1971, with later developments as follows: tropical house, 1976; desert house, 1988; Chinese garden, 1990; savannah houses, 2000. The garden's fenced, outdoors area (13,000 m2) cultivates plants organized into geobotanical regions, including forests, coasts, meadows, prairies, and marshes from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. It also contains an alpine garden and succulent garden. Its Chinese garden (1000 m2) was created from 1986 to 1990, and renovated in 2001, by skilled gardeners donated by the Tongji University in Shanghai as a sign of friendship. It is named Qian Yuan (Qian Garden), reflecting a memory of poet Tao Qian (365-427 AD), and laid out in the southern Chinese style. A pond covers half its area. The garden's greenhouses (total area 3,500 m2) contain collections of succulent Euphorbia (350 species), other succulents, Cycadaceae, Canary Island plants, Eriocaulaceae (5 species), and alpine plants. They are organized as follows: Tropical house (713 m2, 17 meter height) - tropical jungle vegetation and useful plants, with a small stream, herbs, banana trees, coffee bushes, etc. Desert house - dry tropical and subtropical plants from South America, Madagascar, and South Africa. Savannah houses - sclerophyllous shrubs from the savannahs of South Africa and Australia with accompanying vegetation. Collections include many eucalyptus species, as well as Australian grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) and an arborescent Cussonia. Alpine House (140 m2) - plants from high mountains

Laer (German pronunciation: [ˈleːɐ̯], formerly [ˈlaːɐ̯]) is a district of the city of Bochum in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Laer is to the east of Altenbochum and the central business district. Laer used to base the largest General Motors factory in Germany (Opel), before the Opel site was purchased by Groupe PSA in 2017.

Since 1975 the former city of Herbede is a part of the city of Witten (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). As one of the eight boroughs of Witten, it is now called Witten-Herbede. Before the incorporation with Witten in 1975, Herbede was a city in the administrative district Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis. Herbede is placed about 5 kilometres southwest of the city of Witten in the southern Ruhr area in the Ruhr valley and has about 13,100 inhabitants today. Herbede has good bus connections and is served by bus lines 320, 374, 375, SB38, SB67 and at the weekend by night bus NE17. There are direct bus connections to central Witten, Witten-Annen, Witten-Rüdinghausen, Witten-Heven, Ruhr University Bochum, Wetter, Gevelsberg, Ennepetal, Hattingen and Wuppertal.

Stiepel is a southern district of the City of Bochum in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is on the Ruhr River, which is its border to the neighbouring cities of Hattingen and Witten. Stiepel used to be a municipality in the rural district of Bochum, but was integrated into Bochum in 1929. Stiepel is the most affluent part of Bochum. It has an old village church dating from 1008. Originally a Catholic church, it became a Lutheran church in 1610 when the minister broke away from the church and converted to Lutheranism. The church was honored with a stamp commemorating its 1000th anniversary in 2008. Stiepel Priory is located in the town.

Altenbochum is a statistical area and a district of the city of Bochum in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Altenbochum is East of the central business district. Altenbochum lies between Gleisdreieck and Laer. Altenbochum is connected to Gelsenkirchen, the district Langendreer, central Witten and Heven (district of Witten) by tram. Tram lines 302 and 310 and several bus lines stop here.

Stiepel Priory is a Cistercian monastery in Stiepel in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in 1988 at the instigation of Franz Hengsbach, first Bishop of the Diocese of the Ruhr. It is a dependent house of Heiligenkreuz Abbey in Austria. The priory church is also a place of pilgrimage to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is taken care of by the monks and the local parish.

Albert-Einstein-Schule was a Gymnasium for boys and girls from grades 5–13 in Bochum, Germany. It had about 900 students. Just south of downtown Bochum, the school was in the Wiemelhausen section of town and shared a campus with the Hans Böckler Realschule. The school had an emphasis in natural science and English. It had a bilingual program, where some classes were taught in English, rather than German. In 2008, the school was certified as a "Europaschule" (de) (English: Europa School) by the Ministry of Schools of North Rhine-Westphalia. The school held its final day of classes on 14 July 2010. The "Comenius Project," dedicated to exchanging ideas to solve environmental problems, is a joint project of the former Albert-Einstein-Schule, in cooperation with Wath Comprehensive School in Rotherham, England and Col·legi Pare Manyanet in Barcelona, Spain.In August 2010, the Albert-Einstein-Schule merged with the Gymnasium am Ostring to form a new school, named Neues Gymnasium Bochum. The new school was temporarily located at the Erich Kästner Schule while the new buildings were under construction. It opened following the autumn recess on 22 October 2012. The new buildings are on the site of the former buildings, which were razed to permit the new construction.

Schauspielschule Bochum is the informal name of a drama school in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which is now part of the Folkwang University of the Arts. It has a long tradition, being founded in 1939 as Westfälische Schauspielschule Bochum.
