Pennywell

Academy 360 (formerly Pennywell Comprehensive School) is a mixed all-through school located in the Pennywell area of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England.Pennywell Comprehensive School was built in 1967. In 2008 the school converted to academy status and was renamed Academy 360. In the same year the school relocated to a new building on the same site and the old building was demolished. Academy 360 was initially sponsored by Sunderland City Council, Sir Bob Murray and the Gentoo social housing group. In 2016, the DfE appointed the Laidlaw Schools Trust as the Academy's new sponsor. Academy 360 offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. Most graduating students go on to attend Sunderland College which acts as the school's partner further education provider. Academy 360 also operates 'The Achievement Centre' which offers alternative education for small numbers of pupils from across Sunderland.

Christ's College (formerly "Grindon Hall Christian School") is a free school located in Sunderland, in the North East of England. It is non-selective and includes a Primary Department and a Secondary Department. This arrangement allows the incorporation of students from 4 years old to 16 years old. It is a family-run school, based on Christianity, although it welcomes children from other faiths. There are approximately 540 children in the school as of 2013/14. Grindon Hall was originally a manor house. It became a sanitorium and later Fulwell Grange Christian School, which became Grindon Hall Christian School in the year 2000. Fulwell Grange Christian School was founded by Elizabeth Gray in 1988. Her son, Christopher Gray, became head teacher following her retirement. She has since become a school governor. Previously an independent school, Grindon Hall became a free school in 2012 and is now state-funded and free to attend. In September 2019, the school was renamed as part of its transition to join the Emmanuel Schools Foundation

Grindon is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in the United Kingdom. Located three miles to the west of the city centre along Chester Road, Grindon is a densely populated area of Sunderland. It includes a wide variety of housing, from modern, newly built estates to massive post-war housing projects, built to house people whose homes were bombed during World War II.

South Hylton () is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. Lying west of Sunderland city centre on the south bank of the River Wear, South Hylton has a population of 10,317 (2001 Census). Once a small industrial village, South Hylton (with only one access road) is now a dormitory village and is a single track terminus for the Tyne and Wear Metro. South Hylton was originally known as Hylton Ferry or Low Ford, its current name not coming into regular use until the late 18th to early 19th century. It originally formed part of the Manor of Ford owned by the Barons Hylton, until the estates of Hylton Castle were sold off in 1750 after the death of the last baron. Originally a collection of farmsteads, it became a diversified industrial village as a result of the Industrial Revolution.

South Hylton is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburbs of Pennywell and South Hylton, City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, North East England. It joined the network as a terminus station on 31 March 2002, following the opening of the extension from Pelaw to South Hylton.

Washington Football Club is a football club based in Washington, Tyne and Wear, England. The club was formed by the local miners at the local "F-Pit" Colliery in the early 20th century as Washington Colliery F.C. The club's distinctive red colours were agreed upon on formation and a codicil written making the team strip of red shirts being in existence in perpetuity. The modern club was established in 1947 and joined the Wearside League in 1968. In the 1977–78 season, they reached the third round of the FA Vase. The club won promotion to the Northern Football League Division One after winning their last seven games of the 2014–15 season. It was their highest league standing since the 2003–04 season.

Sunderland West End Football Club is a football club based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. They are currently members of the Northern League Division Two and play at the Ford Quarry Hub.

Hastings Hill is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. Hastings Hill is a housing estate, close to the A19, and the Pennywell and Grindon areas of Sunderland. It was built as a private development in the late 1960s on an area of land between the county borough boundary and the surrounding post war council-built estates. The estate stands close to Hasting Hill, where a burial ground used by prehistoric man in about 2,000BC was excavated in 1911. Several cists were discovered during the excavation, with one containing the remains of a man, a flint knife and an earthenware food vessel.

Claxheugh ( KLATCH-əf) is an area of South Hylton, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. The area is primarily known for the large, limestone and sandstone cliff formed in the Late Permian period, known as Claxheugh Rock, which forms part of the Ford Formation. Stone from the rock was quarried in the 19th century. The rock is often referred to as 'klachy rock' by the locals. Claxheugh Rock is known as the rock of the wear by some and is home to many birds and wild animals, since 2003 the population of rabbit has decreased by over 60% by poachers and hunters.

Thorney Close is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear in England. It is located on the northern edge of the A690 (Durham Road), and borders with Grindon to the north and Herrington to the south, and the A19 to the west.

Castletown is a suburb of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, England. A former mining community, the Hylton Colliery was located at the east end of the village; it lies north of the River Wear, and is near to Hylton Castle and Washington. At Hylton Riverside, on the eastern fringe of Castletown, there is a large retail park. There is a large-scale redevelopment project, aimed at modernising the former pit houses and the area around the Aviary Estate. Since 2011 there have been further developments in the east part of the village. The Aviary area has been completely demolished and a new housing estate has replaced both sides of the main street. This site was re-developed by the Gentoo Group. At the opposite end of Castletown is the newer development of Fulford Grange. Currently, the records state that Castletown is the least ethnically diverse area in Sunderland, with 99.3% of the population being white. Despite its proximity to Sunderland, until 1967 this colliery village was under the administrative control of Durham County Council and was part of the Sunderland Rural District Council. This was because it was a fairly isolated community until the extensive council house building of the fifties and sixties at the Red House, Hylton Castle and Town end Farm Estates effectively joining the settlement to the rest of Sunderland's new northern suburbs. The Northern Spire Bridge, joining Castletown to Pallion, opened in August 2018. During the search for the Yorkshire Ripper, the accent of "Wearside Jack", the author of a hoax letter claiming to be from the Ripper, was identified by the forensic linguist Stanley Ellis as that of the Castletown area. The hoaxer was eventually revealed to have come from nearby Pennywell.
