Lockwood Folly River

USS Iron Age was a steamer acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the Navy to patrol navigable waterways of the Confederacy to prevent the Confederates from trading with other countries.

Varnamtown is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States situated on the banks of the Lockwood Folly River. The population was 541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The 65-foot-high (20 m) Holden Beach Bridge carries NC 130 across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), connecting the town of Holden Beach to the mainland. The 1,800-foot-long (550 m) structure, built under contract to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, consists of 20 approach spans of Type III and IV prestressed concrete AASHTO girders and 3 channel spans of prestressed, precast box girders.

Sunset Harbor is an unincorporated community on the banks of the Lockwood Folly River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. It is bordered by the city limits of Oak Island and is situated across the river from Varnamtown. By road, the community can only be accessed by Sunset Harbor Road, which feeds into North Carolina Highway 211.

Holden Beach is a seaside town in Brunswick County, North Carolina. The population was 575 at the time of the 2010 census. It is part of the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Supply is a small unincorporated community in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States, located around the intersection of US 17 (Ocean Highway) and NC 211 (Southport-Supply Road/Green Swamp Road). Its name is derived from the use of the Lockwoods Folly River as a trade route in the 18th and 19th centuries. Residents of the nearby beach communities of Holden Beach, Oak Island, Ocean Isle, Caswell Beach, and Sunset Beach often formerly commuted to Supply for goods and other materials. This practice is still common, but development in the town of Southport and in the Intracoastal Waterway commercial districts has made traveling to Supply unnecessary.

Long Beach, North Carolina is a coastal neighborhood on Oak Island incorporated in 1955. It is well known for the total devastation it sustained during Hurricane Hazel in 1954; only five of the 357 buildings survived the storm. It merged with neighboring Yaupon Beach in 1999 to form the town of Oak Island and is now a neighborhood of the town. The community derives its name from one of the longest stretches of beach in the area.

Oak Island is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast in Brunswick County, North Carolina near the South Carolina border. A barrier island, it contains the towns of Oak Island and Caswell Beach, Fort Caswell (since 1949 home to the North Carolina Baptist Assembly) and the Oak Island Coast Guard Station which is co-located with the Oak Island Lighthouse. Almost 13 miles long, the island averages about one mile wide. Approximately 7000 people live on it year-round, a number which can balloon to over 40,000 during the summer

St. James or Saint James is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,165 at the 2010 census, up from 804 in 2000. It is part of the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Shallotte River (pronounced shallOtte) is a tidal river in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Waters drain from the tributaries of the Green Swamp near the town of Shallotte and flow south down the river to empty into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Approximately one mile southwest of the river's mouth lies the Shallotte Inlet which connects the Intracostal Waterway to Long Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. The inlet separates Holden Beach Isle from Ocean Isle and was the actual mouth of the Shallotte River prior to the Intracoastal Waterway's construction and decades of shifting sands.

Oak Island is a seaside town located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina, United States. Part of Brunswick County, the major portion of the town is on Oak Island which it shares with Caswell Beach. Founded in 1999 as the result of the consolidation of two existing towns, Oak Island's main industry is tourism. Per the 2020 census, the town has a permanent population of 8,396 while its summer population is near 50,000. It along with the town of Caswell Beach is part of the Wilmington, NC, Metropolitan Statistical Area.
