Water Street (St. John's)

Downtown St. John's is the historic core, and central business district of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Located north of St. John's harbour, it is the business, entertainment, and tourism centre with office buildings, hotels, restaurants, and other services.

George Street is a small street located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, that is known for its many bars and pubs. The two-block long street houses nothing but bars, pubs and restaurants. George Street is open only to pedestrians in the evenings and during most of the business day, being open to traffic only in the mornings to allow bars to restock their goods. The street does not usually become crowded with people until later at night, around midnight, and will remain busy until early in the morning, possibly as late as 6 a.m., despite the absence of the sale of alcohol. There are however, many hot dog vendors and 24-hour restaurants nearby. The street is the venue for an annual Mardi Gras celebration in October which can be confusing; most celebrations of this type occur in February in other parts of the world. However, the largest celebration on George Street is the six-night George Street Festival which occurs in early August and typically concludes on the Tuesday night before the Royal St. John's Regatta, which is set for the first Wednesday in August. The festival is rumoured to be the largest of its kind in North America with over 120,000 people making their way through the streets during the six-day period. George Street was once six blocks long, but with the construction of the St. John's Convention Centre, which sits directly on top of what used to be roughly the middle of the street, the street became "George Street" and "George Street West". As such, George Street proper is now only two blocks long. George Street West is home to a number of businesses, residences and a church, while George Street itself is the predominant home of St. John's' nightlife.

The St. John’s Court House is located on Water Street and Duckworth Street in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Constructed in 1901–04, the building is a National Historic Site of Canada. Sources differ with regard to its architect; it was designed either by William Tuff Whiteway or by William H. Greene.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is an Anglican cathedral located in the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The church is considered to be the mother church for Anglicans in Newfoundland and Labrador. The cathedral is the seat for the Bishops of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, Sam Rose, since 2020.The Anglican parish in the Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador was founded in 1699 in response to a petition drafted by the Anglican townsfolk of St. John's and sent to Henry Compton, Bishop of London. In this petition, the people also requested help in the rebuilding of their church, which had been destroyed, along with the rest of the city, in 1696 by the French under the command of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville. During the centuries, at least six wooden churches stood on or near this site; each was destroyed by military operations during the various wars between the French and the British. The British finally won control of eastern North America. As of 2019, this Parish allows clergy to officiate same-sex marriages.

The Archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland (Latin: Archidioecesis Sancti Ioannis Terrae Novae) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is the metropolitan of an ecclesiastical province with two suffragan dioceses: Grand Falls, and Corner Brook and Labrador. The current archbishop is Peter Hundt. The Archdiocese of St. John's is the oldest Roman Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdiction in English-speaking North America. The Basilica of St. John the Baptist is the cathedral of the archdiocese. The building sits within the St. John's Ecclesiastical District, a National Historic District of Canada.

The Masonic Temple built in 1894 at St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada is an example of Victorian construction which includes pilasters, free-standing columns and multiple pediments. The Masonic Temple was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in April 1995.

Eastern Edge Gallery is an artist-run centre based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Eastern Edge Gallery was established in 1984 as the first artist-run centre in the province. In 1987, it moved out of the LSPU Hall in to Flavin St, where City Building inspectors posted "stop-occupancy orders." Eastern Edge Gallery moved to its current Harbour Dr. location on November 5, 1988.Eastern Edge promotes contemporary art and practices, supporting both established and emerging artists through exhibition opportunities, performances, screenings, panel discussions, and special programming. In addition, the ARC founded HOLD FAST Contemporary Arts Festival; the province's first and longest running festival dedicated to contemporary art. In 2017 Eastern Edge launched Identify: A Celebration of Indigenous Arts and Culture, "to create space for Indigenous voices and expression, bringing together Indigenous arts and culture professionals from the theatre, film, literature, visual, culinary and textile art communities of Newfoundland and Labrador while giving time and space to reinforce their history and current experience." Eastern Edge Gallery is also the home of the rOGUE Gallery, which supports projects by artists who have a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador. An influential director of Eastern Edge was Mary Florence MacDonald, who held the role of Executive Director between 2012 and 2015. To continue the legacy of MacDonald, Eastern Edge helps to facilitate initiatives of the Mary MacDonald Foundation, which supports independent curatorial initiatives. From December 2016 to March 2020, the current Executive Director of Eastern Edge is artist Philippa Jones. Currently, the Interim Director is Daniel Rumbolt, and Charlotte May Hobden is the Programming Assistant.In 2019 Eastern Edge established EE Studios, a space dedicated to artist residencies and community events. In 2020 they established the first International Atlantic Artist Residency Program with Artlink Ltd in Donegal, Ireland.Exhibitions in Eastern Edge's main space have presented the work of Michelle MacKinnon, Meagan Musseau, Logan MacDonald, Emily Jan, Marcia Huyer, Bushra Junaid, Jane Walker, Vivian Ross-Smith, Heather Goodchild, Naomi Yasui, Jordan Bennett, April White, Emily Hayes, Ashley Hemmings, D'Arcy Wilson, Emily Clark, Bethany Mckenzie, Catherine Moret, Faune Ybarra and Ursula Johnson.

St. Michael's Printshop is an artist-run print studio in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded in 1974, it provides fine art printmaking facilities for established and emerging artists, including intaglio, lithography, and relief printing. It also offers studio rentals, workshops and exhibition space, and maintains an artist-in-residence program.

351 (stylized III fifty one) is a 165,000-square-foot office building. The high-rise is in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, at 351 Water Street. The office building is the first to be constructed downtown in 25 years and was completed in 2013 by East Port Properties. The building consists of a parking garage spanning the bottom six floors (labelled floors 0 through 5) beneath an office tower on the top six floors (6 through 11), The current anchor tenant of 351 is Cenovus Energy, who occupy offices on five of the six commercial storeys. Subsea 7 also maintains offices in the building.

The Bank of British North America Building built in the Italianate style was constructed in 1849 for the British Bank of North America, Newfoundland's first commercial bank. The building was built after the St. John's fire of 1846 by Halifax architect David Stirling. The British Bank of North America was formed in 1835 and opened its first colonial branch in Newfoundland in 1837, with other branches soon to follow in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Yukon and in California. From 1857 to 1894 the building was acquired by the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland and had replaced the original hipped roof with a mansard roof. In 1892 it sustained more fire damage in the fire of 1892, it was of the few structures that survived the devastation. It was reconstructed by William Howe Greene, who had also built the Supreme Court House and Cabot Tower. In 1895 the Bank of Montreal moved into the building and two years later, the only Newfoundland bank to survive the 1894 Crash, the Newfoundland Savings Bank, moved into the building. Then again in 1962 the Bank of Montreal purchased the Savings Bank and reacquired the building. In 1985 the Bank of Montreal donated the building to the City of St. John's. This style later became popular in Canada. Newfoundland’s first commercial bank from 1849-1857. In the following century the building housed a few other banks. From 1857 to 1894 The Banks of Newfoundland, then from 1895 for two years Bank of Montreal and Newfoundland Savings Bank from 1697 to 1962 and Bank of Montreal again from 1962 to 1985.At present the building is home to the College of the North Atlantic's Anna Templeton Centre established as a non-profit crafts and arts training and education centre. The building was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990. The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador designated the site a Registered Heritage Structure on May 3, 1991.

Mount Scio is a provincial electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador. As of 2011 there are 14,482 people living in the district.Mount Scio includes part of the town of Paradise and part of the city of St. John's. The district was created following the 2015 electoral districts boundaries review. The majority of Mount Scio was previously the district of St. John's North. The district also includes parts of the former districts of Mount Pearl North, St. John's East and Topsail.Former Liberal Cabinet Minister Dale Kirby was the district's MHA from 2015 until he retired in 2019. Sarah Stoodley, a insurance firm communications specialist, was elected for the Liberal Party in 2019.

The Great Fire of 1846 occurred in St. John's, Newfoundland, a colony of the United Kingdom on 9 June 1846. The fire started at the shop of a cabinetmaker named Hamlin, located on George Street off Queen Street, when a glue pot boiled over. The fire spread along Water and Duckworth Streets destroying all of the buildings in its path aided by the large quantities of seal oil that were stored in the merchants' premises. The fire was also aided by an attempt to blow up a house on Water Street which scattered burning embers across the city.
