King Street, Cambridge

The Champion of the Thames is a pub in King Street, Cambridge, England. The pub's name derives from an oarsman who won a sculling race on the Thames before moving to Cambridge in 1860. He required that all mail to him be addressed to "The Champion of the River Thames, King Street, Cambridge". The rowing connection continues, the Champion of the Thames rowing club being sponsored by the pub. It is a Grade II listed building, and its late-19th-century interior is unaltered. It is on the Regional Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors for East Anglia.The pub is mentioned in Tom Sharpe's novel Porterhouse Blue, in which it is said to be the character Skullion's favourite pub, although Sharpe changed the pub's name to The Thames Boatman in the novel. It is one of the smaller pubs in Cambridge and is part of the King Street Run, a pub crawl with the object of consuming one pint of beer in each pub in King Street in the quickest time. Since 1992, a team from the pub has played an annual cricket match against a team from the St Radegund for the King Street Trophy.

All Saints' is a church on Jesus Lane in central Cambridge, England, which was built by the architect George Frederick Bodley. The church was constructed in stages between 1863 and 1870 and is a notable example of English Gothic Revival style. It was designated Grade I listed building status in 1950. It was vested in the Churches Conservation Trust in 1981. Opening times vary and visitors should contact the Churches Conservation Trust to confirm current arrangements.

Westcott House is an Anglican theological college based on Jesus Lane in the centre of the university city of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Its main activity is training people for ordained ministry in the Church of England and other Anglican churches. Westcott House is a founding member of the Cambridge Theological Federation. The college is considered by many to be Liberal Catholic in its tradition, but it accepts ordinands from a range of traditions in the Church of England.

St Radegund's Priory, Cambridge was a Benedictine nunnery in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. It was founded before 1144 (probably in the late 1130s) and dissolved in 1496 by the initiative of John Alcock, Bishop of Ely.

Jesus College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college's full name is The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and the glorious Virgin Saint Radegund, near Cambridge. Its common name comes from the name of its chapel, Jesus Chapel. Christ's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college includes the Master, the Fellows of the College, and about 450 undergraduate and 170 graduate students. The college was founded by William Byngham in 1437 as God's House. In 1505, the college was granted a new royal charter, was given a substantial endowment by Lady Margaret Beaufort, and changed its name to Christ's College, becoming the twelfth of the Cambridge colleges to be founded in its current form. Christ's Pieces or Christ's Piece is a Victorian park in the east of central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with flower beds, ornamental trees and a memorial garden to Diana, Princess of Wales. The area acts as an important publicly accessible open grassed area for the city centre. It is east of Christ's College and to the north of Emmanuel College. To the north is King Street, to the east is Emmanuel Road, to the south is Drummer Street, and to the west is Milton's Walk. The park is used by pedestrians walking between the centre of the city and the Grafton Centre (a shopping centre). In good weather, it is often used as a place for lunch outside as well. There are tennis courts at the northwest corner of Christ's Pieces and a bowling green in the southeast corner. The main central Cambridge bus station is north off Drummer Street on the southern edge of Christ's Pieces near the southwest corner. There is a Christ's Pieces Residents Association (CPRA) for local residents and others interested in maintaining the character of the surrounding area.

Jesus Lane is a street in central Cambridge, England. The street links with the junction of Bridge Street and Sidney Street to the west. To the east is a roundabout. To the south is King Street, running parallel with Jesus Lane and linking at the roundabout. The road continues east as Maid's Causeway and then Newmarket Road east out of Cambridge. To the north is Victoria Avenue between Jesus Green to the west and Midsummer Common to the east. Also to the north near the western end is Park Street, location of the ADC Theatre. To the south is Short Street, quickly leading into Emmanuel Road past Christ's Pieces. Jesus Lane is an ancient route, formerly called Nunnes Lane, that gave access to the Nunnery of St Mary and St Radegund on which Jesus College, Cambridge is founded. It crossed the King's Ditch. Little Trinity on the lane is one of the best domestic buildings in Cambridge, alongside 49 Jesus Lane. Jesus College is located on the north side of the street, and gives the street its name. Sidney Sussex College is to the south of Jesus Lane on the western end, fronting onto Sidney Street. Jesus Lane Friends Meeting House was established here on land donated by Anne Docwra in 1700. Also located on Jesus Lane are Wesley House, Methodist theological college (or seminary), on the north side and Westcott House, a Church of England theological college, on the south side. A mediaeval church, All Saints Jewry, originally stood in St John's Street, to the west of Jesus Lane. It was rebuilt in 1820 and then demolished in 1865.All Saints, designed by the Victorian architect G. F. Bodley and built 1863–70, is now located in Jesus Lane. It is one of the best examples of Victorian churches in the area. The University Pitt Club, a University of Cambridge club, has premises at 7a Jesus Lane. The neoclassical building was originally designed as Victorian Roman Baths in 1863 by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt who later bought it, and rented part of it back to the club. Later, the club bought the entire building, and for much of the 20th century. In October 1997, the club sold a 25-year leasehold on the ground floor of its building to the Pizza Express chain. Since then, the club has the first floor of the building.

County Hall is a former municipal building, now used for student accommodation, in Hobson Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. It is a Grade II listed building.

Wesley House was founded as a Methodist theological college (or seminary) in Jesus Lane, Cambridge, England. It opened in 1921 as a place for the education of Methodist ministers and today serves as a gateway to theological scholarship for students and scholars of the Wesleyan and Methodist traditions from around the world. It was a founding member of the Cambridge Theological Federation, an ecumenical body of theological colleges in Cambridge which is affiliated to but independent of the University of Cambridge.

St Radegund is a pub in King Street, Cambridge, England. It is named after St Radegund, a Frankish saint associated with the nearby Jesus College. It was closed under notice of forfeiture in August 2019 but is expected to reopen under a new landlord in 2023.

Wesley Methodist Church is a Methodist church located next to Christ's Pieces in central Cambridge, England. The church was founded in 1913 "to attract and retain, and not repel, the young Methodists who come to this University", in the words of the then President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference.The church was built to replace an earlier Wesleyan Methodist church on Hobson Street, built in 1849, whose site was developed for the County Hall of Cambridgeshire. It is named for John Wesley, a founder of Methodism. The structure is characteristic of the Gothic Revival style of architecture. It was extensively refurbished in 1990 at a cost of £1.3 million. An 1844 William Hill organ was installed in the 1990 refurbishment. Wesley is one of thirteen churches in the Cambridge Methodist Circuit, and one of two Methodist churches in the city of Cambridge, with the other in Castle Street. The building is now a focus for various social activities; it is a working church with daily prayer and several Sunday services each week. Cambridge Student Methodist Society (MethSoc), a student group, holds its weekly meetings in the church's "Upper Room".The church has close links to other Methodist institutions in Cambridge, including Wesley House theological college, and The Leys School.
