Göhrde State Forest

Göhrde is an unincorporated area in the German district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, 51.92 km2 (20.05 sq mi) in size. It contains large parts of the Göhrde State Forest and is unpopulated - the villages of Kollase, Röthen and Zienitz are exclaves of the bordering municipality of Göhrde, not the unincorporated area. It is also bordered by Zernien, as well as the districts of Lüneburg and Uelzen.

The Göhrde hunting lodge (German: Jagdschloss Göhrde) is a former hunting lodge in Göhrde, Lower Saxony in Germany. The Göhrde State Forest was once a favourite hunting ground of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Later the kings of Hannover also hunted here and – to 1918 – the German emperors as well. As Elector of Hanover, king George I of Great Britain (1660–1727) built a baroque style palace here between 1706 and 1709 by the architects Louis Remy de la Fosse and Johann Christian Böhm. The palace was timber framed and in bad repair by the early 19th century. In 1827, it was taken down. The German Emperors redeveloped the former stables in a new hunting lodge. After the First World War, the hunting lodge served as a seminary and school. Today, it is privately owned and in poor condition. Almost nothing remains of the 18th-century splendour.

Göhrde is a municipality in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The municipality was named after the Göhrde State Forest, which has an area of about 75 square kilometres (29 sq mi), famous for its oaks, beeches and game preserves. The Göhrde Hunting Lodge situated in the forest was built in 1689 and was restored by Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover. It is known to history on account of the constitution of Gohrde, promulgated here in 1719. It is also notable for the Battle of the Göhrde on 16 September 1813 during the War of the Sixth Coalition, in which Allied forces under Wallmoden defeated the French forces commanded by Pécheux.

The Drawehn is a partly wooded and partly agricultural region of hills in the northeastern part of the German state of Lower Saxony, lying between the districts of Lüneburg and Uelzen in the west and Lüchow-Dannenberg in the east. It is named after the Slavic tribe of the Drevani.

At a height of 142 m above sea level (NN) (466 feet) the Hoher Mechtin is the highest elevation in the Wendland in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in northern Germany, and is at the same time a significant high point on the entire North German Plain. It lies roughly at the centre point of the Drawehn ridge, which is also described as the East Hanoverian gravel or end moraine. (Osthannoversche Kies- or Endmoräne). The area is part of the Ostheide division of the Lüneburg Heath. Debris consisting of sand, loam, gravel, stones and glacial erratics several metres across was transported southwards by the glacier flowing from Scandinavia in a series of advances in the Saale glaciation, leaving the Drawehn behind as an end moraine after it melted. Today the area is predominantly covered in pine forest, but mixed deciduous forest comprising oak, birch, beech and other trees dominates the scene in a few places, especially on the high spots and slopes. On the summit of the Hoher Mechtin is a wooden observation tower, rebuilt in 2015.

The Göhrde murders were two double murders which took place in the summer of 1989 near Göhrde in Lower Saxony, West Germany. Within the space of a few weeks, two couples were found dead in the Göhrde State Forest, deemed by police to have been victims of the same killer. Although the murders remain unresolved, police announced in December 2017 that Kurt-Werner Wichmann, a suspected serial killer who committed suicide in 1993, was their prime suspect. Investigators have also speculated that another unknown person may be linked to the killings. The murders were widely reported on in the German press, and the area where they took place was largely avoided by members of the public for nearly thirty years.
