Durham School (Durham, Arkansas)

Durham is an unincorporated community in eastern Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The community is on Arkansas Highway 16 along the White River valley between Elkins to the northwest and Thompson in Madison County to the southeast. Its elevation is 1,247 feet (380 m).A post office was established at Durham in 1873, and remained in operation until 1967. The Durham School, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was located here.

The Township of Durham is one of thirty-seven townships in Washington County, Arkansas, USA. As of the 2000 census, its total population was 839. Durham Township was established in 1884.

The White River Bridge in Elkins, Arkansas is a historic structure carrying County Road 44 over the White River in eastern Washington County. The bridge is a patented closed-spandrel arch design called the Luten arch, owned by the Luten Bridge Company of Knoxville, Tennessee, which emphasized strengthened piers and abutments, resulting in a reduced need for material. This bridge has three arches, with a total length of 192 feet (59 m). After construction in 1921, farmers in southeast Washington County were better able to bring their products to market in Elkins.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The Cannon Creek Bridge is a historic bridge in rural western Madison County, Arkansas. The bridge is located southeast of Durham, carrying County Road 5340 across Cannon and Coon Creeks. It is a curving concrete deck structure with an overall length of about 103 feet (31 m) and a deck width of 20 feet (6.1 m). Built in 1929 to carry Arkansas Highway 16, it is the only known surviving curved concrete deck bridge in the state. It was bypassed by the present alignment of Highway 16 in the 1980s.The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Mount Olive is an unincorporated community in Richland Township in eastern Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It is located on Mount Olive Road, east of Elkins and the Mount Olive Cemetery is about one quarter mile west of the Washington-Madison county line.

Elkins High School is an accredited comprehensive public high school located in Elkins, Arkansas, United States. The school provides secondary education for students in grades 9 through 12. It is one of ten public high schools in Washington County, Arkansas and the sole high school administered by the Elkins School District. The high school's attendance boundary includes the majority of Elkins.

The Enterprise School is a historic school building in rural central-western Madison County, Arkansas. It is located at the junction of County Roads 6041 and 192. It is a single-story wood-frame structure, basically rectangular in shape, with a metal roof, weatherboard siding, and a concrete foundation. Its roof has exposed rafter ends in the Craftsman style, and it has a double-door entry sheltered by a gabled porch supported by sloping posts. Built about 1935, its construction was probably funded by a Depression-era jobs program.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Stokenbury Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Arkansas Highway 16 in Elkins, Arkansas. Established c.1846, it is the best-preserved property representing the early settlement of Elkins (now a bedroom suburb of Fayetteville). The cemetery is 1.2 acres (0.49 ha) in size, and contains 153 marked and identified graves, 49 graves denoted by unmarked stones, and at least 16 unmarked or illegible burials. It contains several examples of high-style Victorian funerary art.The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Carter (1960–2018) was an unincorporated community in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It is located on Arkansas Highway 74 between Arnett and Sulphur City. At times it was also known as Carter's Store, Carter Store, and Hicks. A post office, for all these names at different times existed from 1875 to 1953. The community has the name of John C. Carter, first postmaster.

Elkins is a city in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The community is located in the Boston Mountains, deep in the Ozark Mountains. A combination of the former unincorporated communities of Harris and Hood, Elkins was established in 1964. Located immediately east of Fayetteville in the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan statistical area, Elkins has been experiencing rapid growth in recent years, doubling in population between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.

The Battle of McGuire's Store (28 October 1862) was fought at McGuire, Arkansas, near Elkins, between Union forces led by Brigadier General Francis J. Herron and Confederate forces under Colonel Jesse L. Cravens during the American Civil War. The skirmish was the result of an attempt by Union Brigadier General John Schofield to trap a body of Confederate cavalry reported to be at McGuire's Store. In the event, the operation failed when Herron's column took the wrong road and approached from the west instead of the north. Herron's well-equipped troops attacked Cravens' poorly armed and demoralized Texas cavalrymen and drove them off. This minor clash and other events caused Confederate Major General Thomas C. Hindman to suspend his intended advance to recover northwestern Arkansas and withdraw to the Arkansas River. Ironically, most of Schofield's soldiers also retreated to Missouri after the fight. Though the clash was minor, it marked one pulse of the ebb and flow of the war in northwest Arkansas.
