German Salt Museum

St. Michaelis is one of the main churches in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. It was first an abbey church of the former monastery of Benedictines, built from 1376 in brick Gothic style. It became Lutheran during the Reformation. Johann Sebastian Bach was for two years a pupil at the school of St. Michaelis.

The East Prussian Regional Museum (German: Ostpreußisches Landesmuseum) in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony in Germany, was established 1987 on the basis of the East Prussian Hunting Museum (German: Ostpreußischen Jagdmuseum) created by forester Hans Loeffke. It documents and commemorates the history, art and culture, but also the landscape and fauna of the former German province of East Prussia. Since spring 2009 the director of the museum is historian Dr. Joachim Mähnert.

The Lüneburg Kalkberg (not to be confused with the Segeberger Kalkberg) is the cap rock of a salt dome in the western part of the German town of Lüneburg. The Kalkberg was a gypsum mine during the middle ages, but is today a Naturschutzgebiet (nature reserve) and a common meeting place for city residents.

Lüneburg was one of the four Regierungsbezirke of Lower Saxony, Germany, located in the north of the federal state between the three cities Bremen, Hamburg and Hanover. The region was created under royal Hanoverian rule in 1823 as Landdrostei Lüneburg (roughly: High Bailiwick of Lüneburg), renamed Regierungsbezirk (roughly: governorate) in 1885, when it was a subdivision of the Prussian province of Hanover. On 1 February 1978 the Lüneburg Region incorporated the neighbouring Stade Region. The governorate, like all the other Lower Saxon governorates, was dissolved in 2004. Lüneburg Water Tower (German: Wasserturm Lüneburg) is a water tower in the southeastern part of the Lüneburg old town in Lower Saxony, Germany, built by the architect Franz Krüger (1873–1936), from designs by Richard Kampf. Its erection was initiated on 3 October 1905, and the tower was taken into use in November 1907. The water tower is 55 metres (180 ft) tall, and is the tallest building in the Lüneburg old town that is not a church. It stands between the considerably newer Nordlandhalle and the Johanneum, the latter now used as a school. The tower consists of a square base of 18 metres (59 ft) and a round portion which is walled up around a 500 cubic metres (18,000 cu ft) large water tank. The upper part is carried by 16 solid columns.

St. Nicolai is a church and Lutheran parish in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is one of three main churches in the town, all built in brick Gothic style. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is a basilica with three naves, built from 1407 to 1440. It features a "star" rib vault that is unique in Northern Germany. When the Reformation was introduced in Lüneburg in 1530, the church became Lutheran. The high steeple was added in the 19th century.

The Church of John the Baptist (Germ. St. Johannis or Johanniskirche) is the oldest Lutheran church in Lüneburg, Germany. It is located in the city centre. Lüneburg is on the European Route of Brick Gothic and the church is an example of this style.

Leuphana University Lüneburg is a public university in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Leuphana was founded in 1946 as a college of education (Pädagogische Hochschule). Leuphana established a unique university model within the German academic landscape that has received several awards. Leuphana University is one of the few universities in Europe to offer a liberal arts programme with their bachelor's programme Studium Individuale. The university is designated as a "foundation under public law". The name Leuphana is derived from an ancient settlement on the Elbe that was mentioned in a 2nd-century geographical world atlas by Ptolemy. Leuphana College concentrates its bachelor's degree studies into eight departments and two teacher training courses. In 2008, a graduate college was opened that integrates master's degree and doctorate programmes. In addition are a pan-departmental research centre and a professional school for advanced study courses, like business co-operation.

The Kunstraum of Lüneburg University is an institution for contemporary art working across different faculties of Lüneburg University. Since its renaming in 2007 the complete name is Kunstraum of Leuphana University Lüneburg.

Lüneburg (officially the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg, German: Hansestadt Lüneburg, pronounced [ˈhanzəʃtat ˈlyːnəbʊɐ̯k], Low German Lümborg, Latin Luneburgum or Lunaburgum, Old High German Luneburc, Old Saxon Hliuni, Polabian Glain), also called Lunenburg ( LEW-nən-burg) in English, is a town in the German state of Lower Saxony. It is located about 50 km (31 mi) southeast of another Hanseatic city, Hamburg, and belongs to that city's wider metropolitan region. The capital of the district which bears its name, it is home to roughly 77,000 people. Lüneburg's urban area, which includes the surrounding communities of Adendorf, Bardowick, Barendorf and Reppenstedt, has a population of around 103,000. Lüneburg has been allowed to use the title "Hansestadt" (Hanseatic Town) in its name since 2007, in recognition of its membership in the former Hanseatic League. Lüneburg is also home to Leuphana University.

Lüneburg station consists of the two formerly independent stations of the town of Lüneburg. Lüneburg Ost (east) is the current station and Lüneburg West now only forms part of the station precinct. Both entrance buildings are located on islands between the platforms.

Lüne Abbey (German: Kloster Lüne) is a former Benedictine nunnery in the Lower Saxon town of Lüneburg. Today it is a Protestant Lutheran convent and is managed by the Klosterkammer Hannover (Hanover Monastic Chamber). The current abbess is Reinhild Freifrau von der Goltz.Founded in 1172, the convent soon established itself as a wealthy and autonomous local power in the Lüneburg Heath region. It recruited its nuns mostly from the influential patrician families of Lüneburg and accommodated up to 60 women over most of its existence. These women would be thoroughly educated in Latin, Liberal Arts and in Christian doctrine and liturgy. Over the course of the 15th and 16th centuries, the convent structure changed first through the monastic reform (1481), then through the Protestant Reformation but was never resolved.
