Quonochontaug Pond

The Babcock House is a historic house also known as Whistling Chimneys, located on Main Street in the Quonochontaug section of Charlestown, Rhode Island.

The Sheffield House is an historic house on Beach Road in the Quonochontaug section of Charlestown, Washington County, Rhode Island. It is a 1+1⁄2-story, wood-shingled, gambrel-roofed residence, with a large, stone chimney; a simple entry at the left side of a 3-bay, south-facing façade; and a 1-story wing at the left side. The house was probably built between 1685 and 1713, probably by Joseph Stanton (1646-1713), the third son of Thomas Stanton (1616-1677), one of the original settlers in this area. Joseph's son Thomas (1691 aft. 1720), had no surviving sons, so the farm was deeded in 1753 to his son-in-law Nathaniel Sheffield (1712-1790) the husband of Rebecca Stanton (1713-1775). Today the house is called the Stanton-Sheffield house. Since 1845, when the Sheffields sold the house, it has been in the hands of several owners, all of whom have respected its integrity. The Sheffield House is an outstanding example of a Rhode Island farmhouse which has remained relatively unaltered from its construction at the turn of the 17th century. Said to be the oldest home in Charlestown and in an excellent state of preservation, it is a living document of early settlement and vernacular architect. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Quonochontaug is a village in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. It is composed of three small beach communities, and is part of Charlestown.

The Joseph Stanton House (also known as the Wilcox Tavern) is a historic house at 5153 Old Post Road (U.S. Route 1) in Charlestown, Rhode Island. The main house is a 2-½ story wood-frame structure built some time before 1739 by Joseph Stanton II, and it is where his son Joseph Stanton, Jr., who would serve as one of Rhode Island's first United States Senators, was born. The house belonged to Stanton, Jr. until 1811 when he sold it to Edward Wilcox, who began operating a tavern on the premises. The exterior has a relatively plain finish except for its front door surround, a 19th-century Greek Revival alteration with sidelight windows and pilasters supporting an entablature. A 1930s addition to the rear of the house provides additional space for modern restaurant facilities. An obelisk stands nearby memorializing Stanton. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Weekapaug Inn is a historic inn at 25 Spray Rock Road in Westerly, Rhode Island. In 1899, Phebe and Frederick C. Buffum built the original Weekapaug Inn on a strip of land between the Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean in the community of Weekapaug, Rhode Island. It was destroyed by the New England Hurricane of 1938, but they rebuilt it the following year. The new structure was situated across the pond from the original site, and it reopened in 1939. The Buffum family ran the inn for the next 108 years until it closed for renovations in 2007. The Weekapaug Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Weekapaug () is a census-designated place in southern Washington County, Rhode Island, part of the town of Westerly, Rhode Island. The population was 425 at the 2010 census.

East Beach or East State Beach is a seaside public recreation area on Quonochontaug Neck, the narrow barrier island that separates Block Island Sound and Ninigret Pond, in the town of Charlestown, Rhode Island, United States. The state beach encompasses three miles (4.8 km) of oceanfront and abuts Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge.

The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge situated along the shore of Ninigret Pond. It is characterized by salt marshes, kettle ponds, freshwater wetlands, maritime shrub lands, and forests, and it is seasonally inhabited by over 250 species of birds. The area was originally used for farming, prior to being utilized in World War II as a Naval Auxiliary landing field. It was designated as a refuge in 1970 upon the transfer of 27.5 acres (11.1 ha) of land to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Subsequent transfers and purchases increased the protected area to approximately 900 acres (360 ha). During the winter months, black ducks, Canada geese, and diving ducks are especially prominent on the pond, while various species of migrating raptors are also common. Wildlife refuge staff also maintain a piping plover nesting program.The refuge encompasses land of the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station Charlestown.

Burlingame State Park is a public recreation area located in the town of Charlestown, Rhode Island. The state park's 3,100 acres (1,300 ha) offer camping, hiking, and water activities on Watchaug Pond. The park's campground abuts the Burlingame Management Area and Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary.

Watchaug Pond is a kettle pond (lake) located in southern Rhode Island, in the town of Charlestown. It is surrounded by the John Vincent Gormley 8-mile loop trail which was dedicated by Senator Jack Reed in 1999. The Vin Gormley trail is the second to last leg of the North-South Trail that transects the state. In addition it is near the Audubon Society's Kimball Wildlife Refuge. The 573-acre (2.32 km2) pond is within 3,000 acres (12 km2) of public land. There is a public cement boat ramp on Sanctuary Road. The Kettle Pond Visitor Center, operated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge, hosts school field trips and educational programs about the pond's flora, fauna and habitats.
