Cataractonium

Catterick Racecourse, sometimes known as Catterick Bridge Racecourse, is a thoroughbred horse racing venue one-mile northwest of Catterick in North Yorkshire, England, near the hamlet of Catterick Bridge. The first racing at Catterick was held in 1783. Catterick stages Flat and National Hunt racing. Both tracks are left-handed, sharp, and undulating. The flat course is just over a mile round, with a 3-furlong run-in. There is a straight 5 furlongs course, which runs downhill for 2 furlongs before joining the round course. The jumps course is about 1 mile 2 furlongs round, with eight fences, three in the home straight and five in the back straight. Both straights have an open ditch. Two-mile races start on a chute that extends from the home straight. The runners jump one fence or hurdle before joining the main course. The run-in from the last fence is 240 yards. The national hunt course is on the inside of the flat course on the home straight but switches to the outside for the back straight before returning to the inside on the home turn. Both courses suit front runners; it is not a course for long-striding horses. The gravel subsoil means the going is usually good. It has been said that "it is not one of the North's most glamorous fixtures". The Catterick Sunday Market, held on the racecourse grounds, is the largest Sunday Market in the North of England. The international flat racing champion Collier Hill won his first race here in March 2002. The feature events at the course are the North Yorkshire Grand National in the Jumps season, held in January, and the Catterick Dash in the Flat season, held in October. There are plans to create an All-Weather track and change the layout of the National Hunt course.

Catterick Bridge is a hamlet about 1-mile (1.6 km) north of Catterick, at the south end of Catterick road bridge. The hamlet includes Catterick Racecourse and a few houses. The Sunday market, held at the racecourse, was once the largest of its kind in Northern England. After declining fortunes, the market closed in 2016. The former Bridge House Hotel currently stands derelict after a fire destroyed a vast majority of the Grade II listed building in 2014. There had been a coaching inn at this site since at least the 16th century. After several attempts to auction the property, it was removed from the market, in October 2020, due to lack of interest. Charles Macintosh, the inventor of the Mackintosh raincoat, Sir John Beresford, 1st Baronet and William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford were educated at Catterick Bridge.

The Bridge House Hotel is a former hotel in Catterick Bridge, a village in North Yorkshire in England. The building was constructed as a coaching inn, at the southern end of Catterick Bridge, in the 17th century. It was originally named the "George and Dragon", and succeeded an earlier building, named by John Leland in the 16th century. The building was altered and extended in the late 18th century. In the late 19th century, it was converted into a private house, but in the 20th century was converted back into a hotel, the "Bridge House Hotel", also spending some time as the "Catterick Bridge Hotel". It was undergoing renovations in 2014, when it was badly damaged in a fire. It was then further damaged by vandals, and was sold in both 2022 and 2023. In 2024, plans were submitted to demolish the worst-affected parts of the building, at the rear, and mostly dating from the 20th century, restore the remainder, convert it into apartments, and build additional housing on the rest of the site. The building is roughcast and has pantile roofs with stone copings and shaped kneelers, and there are two storeys. The central part has a U-shaped plan, with a range of two bays and projecting gabled wings with attics, and there are later added ranges. In the middle is a doorway with pilasters and a segmental pediment containing a coat of arms, and the windows are sashes. In the right range is a semicircular-headed porch and a canted bay window, and in the left range are oriel windows. It has been Grade II listed since 1977.

Catterick services is a proposed motorway service area (MSA) near to Catterick village in North Yorkshire, England. The services were first proposed in 2019, receiving planning permission in 2022, and a revised permission in December 2024 due to a legal issue with the previous approval of 2022. The services have been objected to and criticised due to the location of the site as it will affect wildlife in the area. It was also objected to on the grounds of other nearby services along the stretch of the A1(M) in North Yorkshire, however, government designations state that Leeming Bar, Coneygarth, Scotch Corner and Barton Park services are all motorway rest areas (MRAs), not being of sufficient standard to be motorway service areas (MSAs).

Catterick Bridge is a historic bridge over the River Swale in North Yorkshire, in England. The bridge was constructed between 1421 and 1425, with funding from William de Burgh and seven other local nobles. In 1505, St Anne's bridge chapel was built to the east of the south end of the bridge. The southern pillar of the bridge fell into disrepair, and in 1562 Roger Burgh and two other nobles agreed to fund repairs. These were completed in 1590, but in 1674 the bridge was again recorded as being in poor repair. In 1792, John Carr of York widened the bridge by 13 feet, on the downstream side, and demolished the chapel. He also refaced the north and south arches on the upstream side. In 1914, the Catterick Camp Military Railway was laid across the western carriageway of the bridge, but in 1922 a dedicated railway bridge was constructed a little further upstream. In 1969, the bridge was Grade II* listed. The bridge now carries Catterick Road, the A6136. It was formerly part of the A1, which now crosses the Swale a short distance upstream to the west. It is built of sandstone and consists of three arches, slightly pointed on the older, upstream, side. It has triangular cutwaters with hollow chamfered tops, rising to canted pedestrian retreats, a band, and parapets with triangular coping, ending in circular bollards.

The Catterick Bridge Explosion occurred on 4 February 1944 in the railway sidings at Catterick Bridge station, on the Richmond Branch Line/Catterick Camp Railway in North Yorkshire, England. It killed twelve people and injured more than a hundred. The incorrect loading of explosives into railway wagons is believed to have been the cause, but because of wartime restrictions, reporting of the event was not as widespread as it would have been had the explosion occurred in peacetime.

Catterick Bridge railway station was a railway station in North Yorkshire, England. It was built to serve the villages of Brompton-on-Swale and Catterick. The station was near the junction between the main branch line towards Richmond and a sub-branch line called Catterick Camp Military Railway to what is now Catterick Garrison.

Brompton Road Halt (or Brompton Road Platform) was a railway station in North Yorkshire, England. It was located on the Catterick Camp (now Catterick Garrison) sub branch of the Eryholme-Richmond branch line and served the village of Brompton-on-Swale. The station opened together with the line in 1915 and was also known in timetables as Catterick Bridge. It was situated just south of Catterick Bridge goods yard and had a timber platform, a small booking office and a ground frame. Passengers changing trains here had to walk a short distance to or from Catterick Bridge station, through troop trains did not stop here. In 1943 it was resited south of Brompton Road. The new station had a brick and concrete platform and a ground level signal box with a four-lever frame next to the level crossing. The line closed in 1964, and the tracks were lifted in 1970. In 1988 the platform was demolished.

Brompton-on-Swale is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The village is located three miles east of Richmond and 10 miles (16 km) north-west of the county town of Northallerton on the northern bank of the River Swale.

The Church of St Anne is a parish church in the village of Catterick, North Yorkshire, England. The present church structure dates back to the early 15th century, but some of its stones are from an earlier structure located on the same site. A place of worship in Catterick village is believed to have been in existence since the 7th century. The church has been dedicated to Saint Anne since its original consecration date of 1415. The contract between the benefactors of the church and their stonemason is one of the oldest contractual documents written in English and has provided much insight into the Northern English dialect at that time. The north side of the church has a small section dedicated to the Royal Air Force Regiment who had their home depot at the nearby RAF Catterick between 1946 and 1994.

Brough with St Giles is a village and a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The civil parish also includes the settlements of Catterick Bridge and Walkerville, and Catterick Racecourse and the site of the Roman town of Cataractonium. According to the 2001 Census the parish had a population of 338, increasing to 801 at the 2011 census. Brough was known as Burgh until the 17th century. It was historically a township in the ancient parish of Catterick in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire and was part of the Richmondshire district until 2023. St Giles is now a single farm in the north of the parish. Near the modern farm is the site of the medieval hospital of St Giles, a Scheduled Ancient Monument excavated in 1988–1990. Brough Hall is a Grade I listed country house which has now been converted to apartments. It was originally built in the 15th century but has been altered and extended several times since then. Originally owned by the de Burgh family, from c. 1575 it belonged to the Lawsons. The former Roman Catholic church of St Paulinus in the grounds of Brough Hall was designed in 1837 by Ignatius Bonomi for the recusant William Lawson and is a Grade II* listed building.

The Battle of Catraeth was fought around AD 600 between a force raised by the Gododdin, a Brythonic people of the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" of Britain, and the Angles of Bernicia and Deira. It was evidently an assault by the Gododdin party on the Angle stronghold of Catraeth, perhaps Catterick, North Yorkshire. The Gododdin force was said to have consisted of warriors from all over the Hen Ogledd, and even some from as far afield as Gwynedd in North Wales and Pictland. The battle was disastrous for the Britons, who were nearly all killed. The slain warriors were commemorated in the important early poem Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin.
