Ebensee

Ebensee was a subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp established by the SS to build tunnels for armaments storage near the town of Ebensee, Austria, in 1943. The camp held a total of 27,278 male inmates from 1943 until 1945. Between 8,500 and 11,000 prisoners died in the camp, most from hunger or malnutrition. Political prisoners were most common, and prisoners came from many different countries. Conditions were poor, and along with the lack of food, exposure to cold weather and forced hard labor made survival difficult. American troops of the 80th Infantry Division liberated the camp on 6 May 1945. Residential homes now exist on the site of the camp, and a memorial cemetery is nearby. A memorial tunnel, created in 1994, and the Museum for Contemporary History Ebensee, created in 2001, provide information about the camp to visitors.

Traunkirchen (German: [ˌtʁaʊ̯nˌkiʁçn̩]) is a municipality on the Traunsee in the Austrian state of Upper Austria, Austria.

Traunsee (Austrian German: [ˈtʁaʊ̯nˌzeː] , German: [ˈtʁaʊ̯nˌseː]) is a lake in the Salzkammergut, Upper Austria, Austria. Its surface is approximately 24.5 km2 and its maximum depth of 191 metres makes it the deepest and by volume largest lake located entirely within Austrian territory; only Lake Constance on the border is deeper and bigger. It is a popular tourist destination, and its attractions include Schloss Ort, a medieval castle. At the North end of the lake is Gmunden, at the south end is Ebensee. The lake is surrounded by mountains, including the Traunstein, and a number of other towns and villages surround the lake, including Altmünster and Traunkirchen. There is a local legend that speaks of a waterhorse that lives in the lake. Records mention a mermaid riding on the back of a creature who lives in the waters. Locals refer to it as "Lungy" and photographs have been taken of the creature. [1]

Traunstein (German: [ˈtʁaʊ̯nˌʃ͡taɪ̯n]) is the highest mountain on the east bank of Traunsee in the district of Gmunden, Austria. As measured by the height above sea level of its summit it is 1,691 metres (5,548 ft) high. Because of its almost vertical walls ending directly in the lake and secluded, advanced position Traunstein looks like a boulder in the landscape. Its distinctive silhouette is visible from a great distance therefore it is often called a guardian of the Salzkammergut.

Altmünster (Central Bavarian: Oidmünsta), also known as Altmünster am Traunsee, is a market town located about 3 kilometres south of Gmunden in the Austrian state of Upper Austria, on the west shore of the Traunsee. Its economic base consists primarily of tourism, light industry, and as a bedroom community for people working in larger communities such as Gmunden and Vöcklabruck.

The Langbathseen are two mountain lakes (Vorderer Langbathsee and Hinterer Langbathsee) in Upper Austria's part of the Salzkammergut, 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Ebensee. Its excellent visibility makes the Vorderer Langbathsee a popular diving site.

Schloss Ort (or Schloss Orth) is an Austrian castle situated in the Traunsee lake, in Gmunden, 19 kilometres (12 mi) from Vöcklabruck, the gate to Salzkammergut.

Laudachsee is a lake between the mountains in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut and neighbour to the larger Traunsee. Beside are the mountains Traunstein and Grünberg. In the summer the lake reaches about + 20 °C. It drains through Laudach, Alm, Traun into the Danube.
