Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (IATA: SAV, ICAO: KSAV, FAA LID: SAV) is a commercial and military-use airport in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Savannah/Hilton Head International provides travelers with access to Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as well as neighboring areas including Bluffton and Beaufort, South Carolina and the Golden Isles region of Coastal Georgia. Owned by the City of Savannah and managed by the Savannah Airport Commission, Savannah/Hilton Head International is located seven nautical miles (8 mi, 13 km) northwest of the Savannah Historic District. The airport's passenger terminal is directly accessible to Interstate 95 between Savannah and the suburban city of Pooler. Its previous names include Savannah International Airport, Travis Field and Chatham Field. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a primary commercial service airport since it has over 10,000 passenger boardings (enplanements) per year. U.S. Customs facilities are on the field and the airport is part of a Foreign Trade Zone.

Port Wentworth is a city in Chatham County, Georgia, United States. The 2020 population was 10,878, more than double the population of 5,359 at the 2010 census. Port Wentworth is part of the Savannah metropolitan area.

The Port of Savannah is a major U.S. seaport located at Savannah, Georgia. As of 2021, the port was the third busiest seaport in the United States. Its facilities for oceangoing vessels line both sides of the Savannah River and are approximately 18 miles (29 km) from the Atlantic Ocean. Operated by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), the Port of Savannah competes primarily with the Port of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina to the northeast, and the Port of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida to the south. The GPA operates one other Atlantic seaport in Georgia, the Port of Brunswick. The state also manages three interior ports linked to the Gulf of Mexico: Port Bainbridge, Port Columbus, and a facility at Cordele, Georgia linked by rail to the Port of Savannah. In the 1950s, the Port of Savannah was the only facility to see an increase in trade while the country experienced a decline in trade of 5%. It was chaired and led by engineer Dr. Blake Van Leer (who also led the US Corps of Engineers). Between 2000 and 2005 alone, the Port of Savannah was the fastest-growing seaport in the United States, with a compounded annual growth rate of 16.5 percent (the national average is 9.7 percent). On July 30, 2007, the GPA announced that the Port of Savannah had a record year in fiscal 2007, becoming the fourth-busiest and fastest-growing container terminal in the U.S. As of 2021, the port was third busiest seaport in the United States. The GPA handled more than 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of container traffic during fiscal 2007–a 14.5 percent increase and a new record for containers handled at the Port of Savannah. In the past five years, the port's container traffic has jumped 55 percent from 1.5 million TEU handled in fiscal 2003 to 2.3 million TEU in fiscal 2007. By 2014, container traffic was up to 3 million TEU. In 2018, the Port handled a record 4.35 million TEU, a 7.5 percent increase over 2017.In response to the growth in traffic at both Savannah and the Port of Charleston, the Jasper Ocean Terminal, which would be the largest port in the country if it is completed, is planned to be built upriver on the Savannah River by the mid-2020s.

Georgia Tech Savannah is a satellite campus of the Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology. It is located in Savannah, Georgia, near Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The campus is the institute's hub for professional and continuing education and is home to the regional offices of the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute, the Savannah Advanced Technology Development Center, and the Georgia Logistics Innovation Center.The campus has distributed-learning capable classrooms, laboratories, faculty and staff offices.

Robert W. Groves High School (also known as Groves High School or GHS) is a public secondary school located in Garden City, Georgia, United States, serving students in grades 9–12. The school is part of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, with admission based primarily on the locations of students' homes.

On 7 February 2008, fourteen people were killed and thirty six injured during a dust explosion at an Imperial Sugar owned refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, United States. Dust explosions had been an issue of concern among U.S. authorities since three fatal accidents in 2003, with efforts made to improve safety and reduce the risk of reoccurrence. The Port Wentworth refinery was large and old, featuring outdated construction methods, factors which are believed to have contributed to the fire's severity. The origin of the explosion was narrowed down to the center of the factory, in a basement located beneath storage silos. Large accumulations of sugar dust due to poor housekeeping became airborne from the shock waves, leading to a series of massive secondary explosions spreading throughout the factory. Investigations conducted by the Department of Justice ruled out deliberate criminal activity in 2013.As a result of the industrial disaster, new safety legislation was proposed. Port Wentworth's economy declined because the factory was closed down. Imperial intended to rebuild it and return to production by the end of 2008, with replacement buildings to be completed by summer the following year. Some victims filed up to 44 lawsuits for damages against Imperial and/or the company hired to clean up the site; eighteen have been settled. Imperial said that the explosion was the main reason for a major loss in the first quarter of 2008. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board released its report on the incident in September 2009, saying that the explosion had been "entirely preventable". Investigations by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reached similar conclusions.

Garden City is a city in Chatham County, Georgia, United States, located just northwest of Savannah. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 10,289. Part industrial and part residential, the city is home to much of the heavy industry in Chatham County. It hosts the largest and busiest ocean terminal of the Port of Savannah, the flagship operation of the Georgia Ports Authority. Garden City was created in 1939 as Industrial City Gardens, a community intended to house the large workforce required by the new factories and chemical plants just west of downtown Savannah. Garden City is part of the Savannah metropolitan statistical area.

Saint Augustine Creek is a stream in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is a tributary to the Savannah River. It should not be confused with the original name of the Wilmington River on Georgia's coast.A variant name is "Augustine Creek". (Saint) Augustine Creek was named after Walter Augustine, an 18th-century landholder and proprietor of a sawmill along its course.

The Amazon Venture oil spill occurred at the port of Savannah on the Savannah River in the U.S. state of Georgia. The spill, which occurred from December 4 to 6, 1986, was caused by three defective valves in the piping system of the oil tanker MV Amazon Venture, which leaked approximately 500,000 US gallons (1,900,000 liters; roughly 1,800 metric tons or 2,000 short tons) of fuel oil into the river. Authorities at the port were made aware of oil in the river approximately three hours after the ship began offloading its oil, but due to difficulties in locating the source of the spill, the ship was allowed to continue offloading until it completed on December 6. That same day, chemical testing revealed that the ship had been responsible for the spill. While initial estimates categorized the accident as a minor spill involving about 2,000 US gallons (7,600 L) of oil, this value quickly rose over the following days, ultimately becoming classified as a major spill. Officials focused primarily on protecting the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area upriver from the port that included a large amount of marshland and served as a habitat for several endangered species. However, due to strong tidal currents, containment booms proved ineffective and about a third of the refuge would be contaminated by oil. Cleanup efforts would continue until being declared officially done on March 13, 1987, with roughly 150,000 US gallons (570,000 L) of oil recovered. The spill is considered one of the worst environmental disasters in the region, with particular concern regarding the long-term effects of the contamination on the wildlife refuge. The company that operated the tanker agreed to pay $1.2 million in damages to the U.S. federal government and the states of Georgia and South Carolina, while total damage claims from the spill totaled between $7 million and $8 million.

The Herty Advanced Materials Development Center (HAMDC or Herty AMDC) is a research center currently managed by Georgia Southern University. Herty was established in 1938 by the state of Georgia as an applied research center to honor Charles H. Herty, a chemist whose discoveries spearheaded the utilization of southern softwoods in the manufacture of pulp and paper products. In 2012, Georgia governor Nathan Deal transferred management of Herty to Georgia Southern to enhance economic and business development in the State of Georgia. "Located on a 10-acre campus in Savannah, the Herty Advanced Materials Development Center is a new product and process accelerator, providing technical, market and manufacturing expertise within a 120,000 square foot facility."

Brampton Plantation was a plantation originally founded in colonial Savannah, Province of Georgia. It has been closely associated with Jonathan Bryan, a landowner, patriot and an associate of James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the Savannah colony. Bryan owned it from 1765. The plantation was located between National Gypsum Company and Union Camp Corporation, about 3.5 miles northwest of downtown Savannah on the Savannah River. A cemetery also exists on the land.For fifteen years after the 1733 foundation of the Savannah colony, the land was part of an Indian reservation; in 1757, the land was divided up and allotted to planters. David Graham was the first owner of the section that became Brampton.John Garnier Williamson, a slaveholder, was the owner of Brampton when his probate inventory was recorded in 1814. His son, John Postell Williamson, owned the plantation after his father died.

Sharon Plantation was a plantation originally founded in colonial Savannah, Province of Georgia. It covered around 200 acres (81 ha), on land bounded by Old Louisville Road and the Ogeechee Canal six miles to the west of the city.The plantation came into the Telfair family via Barach Gibbons, son of William Gibbons and the brother-in-law of Edward Telfair. Barach died in 1814 and bequeathed the plantation to his sister, Sarah. Edward married Sarah at the plantation in 1774. One of their children, born in 1791, was philanthropist Mary Telfair. She was their first daughter of eight children.In 1782, during the Revolutionary War, Emistisiguo, chief of the local Upper Creek Indian tribe, attacked Anthony Wayne's camp at the plantation in the early hours of June 24. Wayne had arrived with the intention of disbanding the British alliance with Indian tribes in Georgia. He negotiated peace treaties with both the Creeks and the Cherokees, for which Georgia rewarded him with a large rice plantation.On October 15, 1785, Dr. Samuel Vickers, Surgeon of the Hospitals during the Revolutionary War, committed suicide at the plantation. The coroner found "he had been for some time before insane and not of sound memory and perfect understanding".In 1859, Augustus Wetter purchased the plantation.Around Christmas 1862, the body of a Mrs. Haig, a relative of his wife, was stolen from its vault at the Sharon Plantation. The vault had been forced open, and the body (along with a silver plate that had been resting atop the coffin) was missing. Wetter offered a large reward in the Savannah Morning News for information on the theft.Wetter was buried at the plantation after his death in 1882.Edward Telfair was initially interred in a vault at the plantation after his death in 1807, but his remains were moved to Bonaventure Cemetery later in the 19th century. It is believed Wetter's family is still buried at the site, despite the plantation's sale by the descendants of Wetter.
