Beltingham

Beltingham River Shingle is the name given to a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Northumberland in the north-east of England, notable for an unusual community of flora tolerant to the high levels of naturally occurring heavy metals in the sediment of a section of the River South Tyne.

Bardon Mill is a small village in Northumberland, within the vicinity of the ancient Hadrian's Wall. It is located around 10+1⁄2 miles (17 kilometres) from Hexham, 26+1⁄2 mi (43 km) from Carlisle, and 32 mi (51 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne. The A69 is a major northern trunk road in England, running east–west across the Pennines, through the counties of Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Cumbria. Originally, the road started in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne then later near Birtley, but since the creation of the A1 Western Bypass around Newcastle upon Tyne, it now starts at Denton Burn, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne. The route from the A1 junction to Carlisle city centre is 54 miles (87 km).

Briarwood Banks is the name given to a woodland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in north Northumberland, North East England. Composed mainly of elm, oak and ash, the site is semi-natural and now recovering from the removal of planted conifers.

Redburn is a village in Northumberland, England about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) west of Bardon Mill. It is situated about 4 miles (6 km) south of Hadrian's Wall. The most notable feature of Redburn is Redburn Park, which was refurbished in August 2010. It is also the location of a roadside branch of Starbucks and a BP Garage that serve the A69.

Allen Banks & Staward Gorge is National Trust property in the English county of Northumberland. It is a Victorian garden in a gorge of the River Allen cutting through woodland. The ruins of Staward Peel, a medieval peel tower, stand on a promontory above the gorge. The property has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its rich flora and fauna. There is a large suspension bridge which has been ruined by the flooding of January 2005.

Stawardpeel Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Northumberland, England. This protected area is located in the valley of the River Allen, near Bardon Mill. The protected area is owned by the National Trust, within the Allen Banks & Staward Gorge estate.

The River Allen is a river in the English county of Northumberland. The river has its sources in the hills of the Northern Pennines, and is formed by the confluence of the East and West Allen rivers. The Allen is itself, a tributary of the River Tyne. The Allen was formerly very polluted from mining activity upstream, but remediation schemes have been implemented to allow the water quality to improve. The river is home to a variety of wildlife including voles and otters.

Henshaw is a small village and civil parish in Northumberland, within the vicinity of the ancient Hadrian's Wall. It is located around 11.5 miles (19 km) from Hexham, 25.5 miles (41 km) from Carlisle, and 33 miles (53 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne. Nearby landmarks include Allen Banks & Staward Gorge, Sycamore Gap, The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre and Vindolanda Roman Fort.

Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort (castrum) just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England, which it pre-dated. Archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill in Northumberland, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda tablets, a set of wooden leaf-tablets that were, at the time of their discovery, the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain.
