Jordan Hill, Dorset

Jordan Hill Roman Temple is a Romano-Celtic temple and Roman ruin situated on Jordan Hill above Bowleaze Cove in the eastern suburbs of Weymouth in Dorset, England. Original amateur archaeological excavations on the site were carried out by J. Medhurst in 1843-6. These were followed by excavations by C.D. Drew and C.S. Prideaux during 1931-32 suggesting that the site was in operation between c. AD 69–79 to the late 4th century. Some of the finds from the excavations in the 1930s are in the Dorset Museum and the British Museum. There are other Roman sites nearby including Preston Roman Villa to the north west.

Furzy Cliff, also known as Jordan's Cliff, is located on the coast near the village of Preston, just to the east of Weymouth, Dorset, England. It is at the northeastern end of Weymouth Beach, looking out over Weymouth Bay to Portland Harbour and the Isle of Portland. Close by to the east is Bowleaze Cove. Just inland to the north are Jordan Hill and the remains of the Jordan Hill Roman Temple. On the top of the cliff there is a large grass area with good views.Furzy Cliff consists of Oxford Clay with a thin Corallian Limestone layer over this. Mudslides frequently occur on the narrow undercliff and the base is mainly made up of clay material. Fossilized examples of Gryphaea dilatata, commonly called "devil's toenail", an extinct species of Jurassic oyster, and Metriacanthosaurus parkeri, a theropod dinosaur, can be found in the Oxford Clay. In 1816–17, the artist John Constable painted Weymouth Bay: Bowleaze Cove and Jordon Hill, including Furzy Cliff, while on his honeymoon, viewed from the beach at Bowlease and looking west. The painting is now in the National Gallery, London.

The River Jordan (archaically known as the River Jordon) is a river in the county of Dorset, England. The river is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long, and includes the tributaries of the Osmington Brook and the Preston River. The River Jordan discharges into the English Channel at Bowleaze Cove, northeast of Weymouth.

Overcombe is an area in Preston in south Dorset, England, situated on top of cliffs 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of Weymouth. The River Jordan flows in the vicinity.A tollhouse was once situated at the Overcombe corner from Lodmoor, along what was the turnpike road. It was operated by the Shorey family who ran a horse and cart public service. It was demolished in 1959. A block of flats were built in 1965, in place of a cafe. The Spyglass Inn at Overcombe was originally built in the 1930s as a cafe, before becoming the Embassy Hotel and later, the inn. There was once a golf course at Overcombe in the early 20th century. The painter John Constable had his honeymoon at Overcombe.In the field north of Bowleaze Coveway road is Jordan Hill Roman Temple, which is the remains of a c. 4th century Romano-Celtic temple. In 1928, an important hoard of late 4th century Roman coins was unearthed at Weymouth Bay Estate. In October 2013, 19 swimmers swam in the 5 and a half hour Big Swim from Lulworth Cove to Overcombe Corner, raised £2,560 for the Dorchester Opportunity Group. Overcombe car park, run by the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, has approximately 180 parking spaces.

Preston is a coastal village and suburb of Weymouth in south Dorset, England. It is approximately 3 kilometres (2 mi) north-east of Weymouth town centre and 2 kilometres (1 mi) west of the village of Osmington. Preston contains two Haven campsites, Seaview and Weymouth Bay. It is home to a 14th-century church, St Andrew's, which was built on the site of a much earlier Norman church. It has three public houses: The Bridge Inn (formerly called The Swan), The Spice Ship and The Springhead. On the coast is the beach resort of Bowleaze Cove. Preston has a village hall, used for many local groups including the local pantomime group.

Bowleaze Cove is a small sand and shingle beach, near the village of Preston, just to the northeast of Weymouth, Dorset, England. The cove is on the Jurassic Coast and is known for its geology. Just to the west is Furzy Cliff. The beach is made up of mainly shingle and shell with some sandy areas. A small pier divides the beach near the River Jordan outflow. The remains of Jordan Hill Roman Temple are located on Jordan Hill, leading down to Bowleaze. The hill figure of the Osmington White Horse can be seen. A coastal cliff walk leads eastwards from Bowleaze, passing the Broadrock cliffs, Redcliff Point, and thence to Osmington Mills.

Riviera Hotel is a hotel at Bowleaze Cove, Weymouth, Dorset, England. Overlooking Weymouth Bay, the hotel was built in 1936–37 and has been a Grade II listed building since 1997. Historic England has remarked that it "epitomises the austere approach of the modernists in the immediate pre-war era, and suggests the designer's acquaintance with contemporary work in Rome and elsewhere".

Chalbury Hillfort is an Iron Age hillfort about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east of the village of Bincombe, in Dorset, England. It is a scheduled monument.

Chalbury Hill And Quarry (grid reference SY694838) is an 11.9 hectare biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Dorset, England, notified in 1977. The site consists of grassland (10.3 hectare) and a disused limestone quarry (1.6 hectare). The SSSI includes the area covered by Chalbury Hill Fort.

Broadrock is a cliff on the coast in Dorset, southern England. It faces out into Weymouth Bay between Bowleaze Cove and Redcliff Point. There are many landslips on the cliffs at this point.

Lodmoor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), RSPB reserve and country park in Dorset, England. The country park features a visitor centre, model railway and pitch and putt golf course. The SSSI has a wetland habitat with native birds that are rare in the UK and a range of migratory species.

Littlemoor is a suburb of Weymouth in Dorset, England. Littlemoor is about 2 miles (3 km) to the north of the town centre. The nearest railway station is Upwey 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to the west. During World War I, the Littlemoor area was used as an Australian army camp. For this reason many of the roads in the area today are named after towns and cities in Australia. Littlemoor has a skatepark, youth centre and a small shopping centre. Opposite the shopping centre there is a Library; next to which is a small green, and the local Church of England church - St. Francis of Assisi. There is also a community centre where the lottery run Big4littlemoor community groups operates out of off and a youth club. Littlemoor is partially surrounded by fields. It has a woodland area (which has been named Teddy Bear woods, referencing to the famous nursery rhyme) managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust, part of their Lorton Meadows nature reserve. Littlemoor has a high level of deprivation and poverty but this has decreased in recent years as the estate has expanded. The estate is historically a labour stronghold and has been represented by labour councillors since it was created in 2004 with Cllr Mark Tewkesbury (Labour) serving since its creation. Since the move to a unitary council it has been represented by Cllr Tony Ferrari (Conservative) and Cllr Louie O'Leary as part of the Littlemoor and Preston ward.
