Pico das Torres

Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira Island. It can be reached only by foot, usually either from Pico do Areeiro (3rd highest) after a strenuous hike, or from Achada do Teixeira via a shorter, easier trail. There is an additional trail leading west to Encumeada. The hut just below the summit is now open, and there are water tap and toilets available. Pico Ruivo is 1,861 metres (6,106 ft) high and provides panoramic views of the island from coast to coast, but unpredictable weather conditions can make it quite dangerous.

Pico do Areeiro, at 1,818 m (5,965 ft) high is a mountain located on the Portuguese island and autonomous region of Madeira, the third highest on the island. Situated within the mountainous interior of the island roughly halfway between the northern and southern coasts. It is a popular year round tourist attraction with the summit accessible by road directly from Funchal. On a clear day it is possible to see the neighboring island of Porto Santo, 48 km (30 mi) to the northeast. The summit is used as a starting point for hikers heading to Pico Ruivo (the highest point in Madeira) and at peak times up to 1000 people a day can pass by the area. The peak has in recent times become popular with cyclists making the ascent from Funchal. Many cycling publications and online lists usually claim that the climb from sea level to the summit at Areeiro is one of the toughest in the world with 1810 meters of climbing over a very short distance of 22 kilometres. There is easy road access to the summit, with a large car park, a restaurant and souvenir shop. In 2011, an Air Defence Radar Station of the Portuguese Air Force was built at the top of the mountain near the tourist facilities.

Achada do Teixeira is a mountain and a settlement of the freguesia (parish) of Santana, of the municipality of Santana, Ilha da Madeira. It has a natural attraction in basalt stone which is called the "standing man" ("homem em pé" in Portuguese). From here the main access to Pico Ruivo departs via the trail PR1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo. This place has a car park to support visitors. There is a division between three parishes in the municipality of Santana that converge there, Santana, Faial, Ilha. Since 2002, the Astronomy Group of the University of Madeira has held its traditional AstroFesta in this place. In fact, the area surrounding Achada do Teixeira is among the best places for astronomical observation at national level. A little further up is the plateau of Encumeada Alta, one of the best places in the Northern Hemisphere to do astronomy, already located in the parish of Faial. There are plans to install a small robotic observatory next to Achada do Teixeira. A cement base has already been built for this purpose.

Ilha (Portuguese for "island") is a civil parish in the municipality of Santana in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 255, in an area of 14.19 km².

Curral das Freiras ("Pen of the Nuns") is a civil parish in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 2,001, in an area of 25.03 km². It is situated in the mountainous interior of the island. Being one of the more distant locations from the municipal seat of Câmara de Lobos, it is geographically isolated from other communities by the cliffs and peaks surrounding its central valley. A tunnel southwards in the direction of Funchal now offers safe access to the valley.

The village of Ribeiro Frio ("Cold Stream" in English) is situated in the interior of the island of Madeira. It belongs to the parish of São Roque do Faial, the municipality of Santana, and is located around 15 kilometers from Funchal. The little village is known for its trout farm. It is much visited by many tourists as it is a starting point for many levada walks, one leading to Balcões. It is located 860 meters high, in a location surrounded by some woods of especially endemic species of laurel, such as the laurel (Laurus novocanariensis) and heather undergrowth (Erica madeirensis). It is also populated by native birds of the island such as the trocaz pigeon, the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs madeirensis) and Madeira firecrest (Regulus madeirensis).

Boaventura (Portuguese for Bonaventure) is a civil parish in the municipality of São Vicente in the Portuguese island of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 1,221, in an area of 25.30 km².

Santo António (Portuguese meaning "Saint Anthony") is a civil parish in the northwestern part of the municipality of Funchal on the island of Madeira. It is located about 3 km northwest of central Funchal. The most populous civil parish in the archipelago, it extends into the mountainous interior of the island. The population in 2011 was 27,383, in an area of 22.16 km2.

The Madeira Natural Park (Portuguese: Parque Natural da Madeira) is a large biological reserve in Madeira with a unique endemic flora and fauna. It was created in 1982 to safeguard the natural heritage of the archipelago, and contains a number of endangered species including global rarities such as Zino's petrel. This nature park encompasses nearly two-thirds of the territory of the island of Madeira, and within it are nature reserves, protected landscapes and leisure zones. Its key habitat is the laurel forest.

Câmara de Lobos (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkɐmɐɾɐ ðɨ ˈloβuʃ] ; lit. 'Sealion Chamber') is a municipality, parish and town in the south-central coast of the island of Madeira. Technically a suburb of the much larger capital city of Funchal, it is one of the larger population centres and an extension of the Funchal economy.

Monte (English: Mount) is a civil parish in the municipality and a suburb of Funchal in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. Locally, the parish is also known as Nossa Senhora do Monte (English: Our Lady of the Mount). The population in 2011 was 6,701, in an area of 18.59 km². Monte is located a few kilometres east of Funchal.

Terreiro da Luta is located north of Monte (Funchal) and the area was once the last stop on the only cog railway (Monte Railway) in Madeira. It is also where the Our Lady of Peace sanctuary (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora da Paz) is located.
