Pendleton Center, New York

Pendleton is a town on the southern edge of Niagara County, New York, United States. It is east of the city of Niagara Falls and southwest of the city of Lockport. The population was 6,397 at the 2010 census.

Mapleton is a hamlet in the town of Pendleton in Niagara County, New York, United States.Mapleton first appeared on maps in 1860 as Mapletown, but the name had been in use since at least the 1840s. A post office operated between 1850 and 1862 and again from 1889 until 1901, when Rural Free Delivery put it out of business. The Mapleton Presbyterian Church opened in 1847. That year, the Buffalo & Lockport Railroad was completed and a train station was established in Mapleton, and the community's nucleus shifted to the station. A fire nearly destroyed the hamlet on May 28, 1925, when Burt N. Thompson's barn became engulfed in flames.The HBO series The Leftovers takes place in a town called Mapleton, New York, though it is filmed in Westchester County and is described as a suburb of New York City.

Lake Tonawanda was a prehistoric lake that existed approximately 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age, in Western New York, United States.The lake existed on the southern (upper) side of the Niagara Escarpment east of the present course of the Niagara River between Early Lake Erie to the south and Glacial Lake Iroquois (the ancestor of Lake Ontario) to the north. During the retreat of the glaciers, the water levels of the Great Lakes were higher. Lake Tonawanda was created and fed by the elevated waters of Lake Erie. Lake Tonawanda itself was drained into Lake Ontario by a series of falls over the escarpment, including one at present day Lockport, New York. The lake evaporated when the waters of Lake Erie dropped below the level of the feeder streams to the lake. Subsequently Lake Erie drained over the escarpment entirely through Niagara Falls, which marks roughly the western terminus of the former lake bed. The remains of the previous falls, which rivaled Niagara Falls in grandeur, can be seen along the escarpment. The sinking of homes in the lakebed has been an ongoing problem in communities such as Amherst, New York.

The Museum's mission is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit the agricultural history and rural heritage of the Buffalo Niagara region. A 35-acre (140,000 m2) site, the Museum includes 10 historic buildings moved from their original sites, a main exhibit building, a collections storage facility, the Niederlander Research Library, and a Museum Store. An educational institution, BNHV was chartered by the State of New York. Formed as a department of the Town of Amherst, the museum was privatized in January 2011. The name changed in 2012.
