Massey Memorial

Kau Point Battery is a 19th-century coast defence battery constructed in Wellington, New Zealand in the 1890s. It is located on the east side of Point Halswell in Wellington, New Zealand, approximately midway between the Massey Memorial and Fort Ballance, close to the site of the ancient Māori settlement of Kau-whakaara-waru.Construction of the battery was completed in 1891, with the intention of commanding the inner harbour in conjunction with the Halswell Battery, Fort Kelburne and Fort Ballance. The Battery was a single circular gun-pit with an underground magazine on the same level buried behind it. Armament consisted of one One eight-inch disappearing gun. Secondary armament was planned, but never installed consisting of either twoQ.F. Nordenfeldt six-pounder guns or a single QF 6-pounder Hotchkiss. Fire control was provided by a Battery Command Post(BCP), equipped with a MK1b Direction Range Finder was located on the hill behind it.The battery was manned until 1925, and then converted into a magazine and abandoned in the 1950s when New Zealand abandoned its coast defences.

Fort Ballance is a former coastal artillery battery on Point Gordon on Wellington's Miramar Peninsula. Built in 1885 following fears of an impending war with Russia, Fort Ballance is one of the best preserved of a string of nineteenth century coastal fortifications constructed to protect New Zealand from naval attack. In 1885, the Government, reluctantly acknowledging that they could not rely solely on Britain for protection, commissioned engineer Major Henry Cautley to design a series of fortifications to protect the country's main ports. The Fortress is listed as a Category I Historic Place. Fort Ballance was the premier fort in the Wellington area for 26 years (1885-1911). Used by the military over a period of 60 years (1885-1945), the 1880s layout of Fort Ballance is largely unaltered and a good impression of the original nineteenth century fort remains. The fort is a permanent reminder of the technology used in the coastal defence network of the 1880s and it is an early example of the use of concrete as a building material.

Shelly Bay is a bay on the Miramar Peninsula of Wellington, New Zealand. The area was settled by a collection of peoples from multiple Māori iwi in the 1820s and 1830s. It was later bought by the New Zealand Company, in a sale the Crown apologised for in 2008, admitting that the deed was flawed and promises were never kept. Most of the land was owned by the New Zealand Defence Force for 124 years until 2009. During that time it was used as a submarine mining base, a naval station, and an airforce base, and land was reclaimed. Today, Shelly Bay is the site of a planned residential development that is the subject of multiple ongoing court cases and other opposition. Opponents of the development include the Mayor of Wellington Andy Foster, film-maker Peter Jackson, some businesses and some Māori. In November 2020, the Wellington City Council agreed to sell and lease land to the development, against the wishes of mayor Foster. The bay was occupied by Mau Whenua, a Māori group opposing the development, from November 2020 through to May 2022.

David Farrington Park, previously known as Centennial Park, is a football ground in the suburb of Miramar in Wellington, New Zealand. It is used for football matches and is the home ground of both Team Wellington and Miramar Rangers AFC. In 2009, the grounds name was changed to David Farrington Park as a mark of respect to the local football stalwart who died in 2008.On 16 April, David Farrington Park saw the first OFC Champions League game played in Wellington when Team Wellington beat AS Magenta 7–1, also qualifying Team Wellington for the home and away final against Auckland City FC for the 2017 OFC Champions League title and a chance to play at the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup in United Arab Emirates.

Karaka Bays is a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. It lies on the northeast coast of the Miramar Peninsula, 6 km east-south-east of the city centre, and has an expansive view of Wellington Harbour. It takes its name from a New Zealand native tree, the karaka or New Zealand laurel.The suburb consists of residential properties close to the shores of two bays, Scorching Bay in the north and Karaka Bay in the south. Nearby suburbs are Miramar and Maupuia. Prominent features of Karaka Bays include the Scorching Bay Domain, a recreational park at the northern end of the suburb. The Cook Strait ferry passes the coast of Karaka Bay on its way between Picton and Wellington. The area was historically connected with whaling - Coombe Rocks, a series of rocky islets off the coast, were used as a watching-place for cetaceans. In recent years marine mammals have returned to the area, with seals commonly sighted along the coast and orca occasionally visible offshore.

Maupuia on the Miramar Peninsula is an eastern suburb of Wellington to the north-west of Miramar. Developed in the 1970s, it is in the Eastern Ward. Maupuia had a usually resident population of 1,584 at the 2018 New Zealand census, similar to census figures from 2013 (1,599) and 2006 (1,557). As of the 2013 census, 60% of residents were European/Pākehā, 23% were Asian, 10% were Māori, and 9% were Pacific peoples.The northern part of the peninsula, sometimes known as Crawford, includes Maupuia Park, the former Wellington Prison (also known as Mount Crawford Prison) and at the tip of the peninsula on Point Halswell the Massey Memorial, the mausoleum of former prime minister William Massey. Shelly Bay on the west side of the peninsula is a former military (navy and air force) base and is proposed to be developed for housing.Other bays on the west side of the peninsula are Karaka Bay, Scorching Bay, Mahanga Bay and Kau Bay.

Roseneath is a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, located east of Oriental Bay and north of Hataitai. The peninsula was named after Rosneath, a village on the Rosneath peninsula on Scotland's River Clyde, and has no association with roses.

St Barnabas Church is an Anglican church in Roseneath, Wellington, New Zealand. It is registered as Category II by Heritage New Zealand. It was designed by Joshua Charlesworth and opened in 1899. It suffered fire damage in 1924 and the repairs were designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere. de Jersey Clere also designed the belfry in 1910. It was registered as a historic place on 25 November 1982, with registration number 1421.

Hataitai is an inner-city suburb of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, 3.5 kilometres southeast of the city centre. The suburb extends over the southeastern flank of Mount Victoria and down a valley between the Town Belt and a ridge along the shoreline of Evans Bay. Hataitai is bounded by Hepara Street, Grafton Road and the suburb of Roseneath in the north, Wellington Harbour in the east, Cobham Drive, Wellington Road and Crawford Road in the south, and Alexandra Road in the west. Hataitai is on important transport links between the central city and Wellington International Airport, to the south of Evans Bay on the isthmus at Rongotai. It is at the eastern end of the Mount Victoria Tunnel and the bus-only Hataitai Tunnel, built in 1907 for trams, making Hataitai a popular place to live.

Wellington Harbour (Māori: Te Whanganui-a-Tara [tɛ ˈfaŋanʉi a taɾa], historically known as Port Nicholson) is a large natural harbour on the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. The harbour entrance is from Cook Strait. Central Wellington is located on parts of the western and southern sides of the harbour, and the suburban area of Lower Hutt is to the north and east.In the Māori language the harbour is known as Te Whanganui-a-Tara, "the great harbour of Tara". Another Māori name for Wellington, Pōneke, is said to be a transliteration of Port Nick (Port Nicholson).The harbour area bounded by a line between Pencarrow Head to Petone foreshore, was officially named Port Nicholson until it assumed its current dual name in 1984. It is now a regional park, overseen by Wellington Regional Council.

The Evans Bay Patent Slip is a heritage site of the former patent slip located in Evans Bay, in Wellington Harbour in the North Island of New Zealand. The first slipway on the site was commissioned in May 1863 to enable maintenance of the hulls of small vessels. The Wellington Provincial Council was keen to encourage shipping trade by improving facilities in Wellington Harbour and began planning later in 1863 for the construction of a larger patent slip. A concession was granted for the supply, construction and operation of a patent slip on the site. Equipment for the new slip was delivered in 1865 and 1866, but construction was delayed for several years because of a contractual dispute concerning the suitability of the design for the ground conditions. The original suppliers lost a court case and withdrew from the project. The Wellington Patent Slip Company was formed to take over the assets, and construction began in 1871. The Patent Slip was officially opened in March 1873. A second slipway was constructed at the site in 1922. The original slip operated until 1969, and the second was closed on 31 July 1980. Most equipment has been removed from the site, and a residential development now occupies some of the original land. However, the site has been listed as a Category 2 historic place by Heritage New Zealand, and the area is classified as a heritage zone by the Wellington City Council.

Mount Victoria, also known as Matairangi and colloquially as Mt Vic, is a prominent 196-metre (643 ft) hill immediately to the east of central Wellington, New Zealand. About 4 kilometres due south is a spur named Mount Albert and the two are linked by a ridge. Mount Victoria gives its name to the suburb of Mount Victoria to the west.
