Rennsteig Tunnel (German: Rennsteigtunnel) is the longest road tunnel in Germany with a length of 7,878 meters (4.919 mi). The Rennsteig Tunnel is part of the motorway Autobahn A 71 between Gräfenroda and Oberhof in Thuringia. It is also called the Christiane Tunnel for its "godmother" Christiane Herzog, wife of the former German President Roman Herzog. The tunnel was built between 26 June 1998 and 5 July 2003, when it was opened by German chancellor Gerhard Schröder. It was part of the traffic project German unity ("Verkehrsprojekt Deutsche Einheit") and cost 210 million euros. The German automobile club ADAC voted the Rennsteig Tunnel in 2004 as Europe's safest tunnel.

The Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald in German pronounced [ˈtyːʁɪŋɐ ˈvalt] ), is a mountain range in the southern parts of the German state of Thuringia, running northwest to southeast. Skirting from its southerly source in foothills to a gorge on its north-west side is the Werra valley. On the other side of the Forest is an upper outcrop of the North German Plain, the Thuringian Basin, which includes the city Erfurt. The south and south-east continuation of the range is the highland often called the Thuringian-Vogtlandian Slate Mountains.Among scattered foothills at its northern foot are the towns Eisenach, Gotha, Arnstadt and Ilmenau. The town of Suhl sits in a slight dip on the range itself. In October 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Saxony with his "Grande Armée," fighting the Battle of Jena–Auerstedt near the wood. This battle, part of the War of the Fourth Coalition, is generally regarded as the basis of Napoleon's success over the Alliance.

The Großer Beerberg is a mountain, 982.9 m above sea level (NHN), whose summit is the highest point in the Thuringian Forest and the state of Thuringia. It is located between the three villages of Heidersbach, Goldlauter and Gehlberg in the borough of Suhl. The mountain is made of rhyolite (quartz porphry) that was formed through volcanic processes in the Rotliegendes rock of the Oberhof Formation, about 280 million years ago, and which was uplifted over the surrounding sediments to form a butte. Between the summit of the Beerberg and that of its eastern neighbour, the Schneekopf (978 m), the second highest mountain of Thuringia, is a 60-metre-deep col. To the west is the Sommerbachskopf (941 m). On the summit of Beerberg is one of the few moorlands of the Thuringian Forest. Until the end of the 1980s there was an observation tower on the mountain. A few years ago, a small platform was again established below the summit at Plänckners Aussicht, which offers an outstanding view to the south and southwest. The section of the Rennsteig long-distance path between Oberhof and Schmücke runs across the mountain. The nearest town is Suhl.

The Schneekopf near Gehlberg in the Thuringian county of Ilm-Kreis is 978 m above sea level (NHN) and thus the second highest peak in the Thuringian Forest after its western neighbour, the Großer Beerberg (983 m). The Adler Saddle between them is only about 59.4 metres lower than the two summits. To the east some distance away is its subpeak, the Sachsenstein (915 m), to the south are the Teufelskreise (967 m) and Fichtenkopf (944 m). The Goldlauterberg (866 m) further south marks the transition to the mountain of Großer Finsterberg (944 m).

Zella-Mehlis is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, located in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated in the scenic Thuringian Forest, approximately 5 km north of Suhl and 20 km east of Meiningen. The town was notably home to Walther and Anschütz, two of Germany's most notable firearm manufacturers, both of which were originally founded in Zella-Mehlis. They operated there until Soviet occupation of Eastern Germany at the conclusion of World War II caused both companies to move. In January 2019, the former municipality Benshausen was integrated into Zella-Mehlis, expanding the town's jurisdiction.

Gehlberg is a village and a former municipality in Thuringia, Germany. Formerly in the district Ilm-Kreis, it is part of the town Suhl since January 2019.

Suhl (German pronunciation: [zuːl] ) is a city in Thuringia, Germany, located SW of Erfurt, 110 kilometres (68 miles) NE of Würzburg and 130 kilometres (81 miles) N of Nuremberg. With its 37,000 inhabitants, it is the smallest of the six urban districts within Thuringia. Together with its northern neighbour-town Zella-Mehlis, Suhl forms the largest urban area in the Thuringian Forest with a population of 46,000. The region around Suhl is marked by up to 1,000-meter-high mountains, including Thuringia's highest peak, the Großer Beerberg (983 m), approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) NE of the city centre. Suhl was first mentioned in 1318 and stayed a small mining and metalworking town, until industrialization broke through in late 19th century and Suhl became a centre of Germany's arms production, specialized on rifles and guns with companies such as Sauer & Sohn. Furthermore, the engineering industry was based in Suhl with Simson, a famous car and moped producer. In 1952, Suhl became one of East Germany's 14 district capitals, which led to a government-directed period of urban growth and conversion. Its results – a typical 1960s concrete architecture-marked city centre – are defining to the present. With the loss of its administrative and industrial functions, Suhl saw a lasting period of urban decline starting in 1990. Suhl is known for its sportsmen, especially in shooting, winter sports, and volleyball.

Lütsche is a river of Thuringia, Germany, left tributary of the Wilde Gera. Its source is near Oberhof, in the Thuringian Forest. It flows into the reservoir Lütschetalsperre, which is also fed by its right tributary Oberster Wiesengrund. At the confluence with the left tributary Ensebach, the former village Lütsche-Dorf was situated. It was abandoned and demolished in the 19th century. The Lütsche flows into the Wilde Gera in Gräfenroda.
