Spring Mill State Park is a 1,358-acre (5 km2) state park in the state of Indiana. The park is located to the south of Bloomington, about 3 miles (5 km) east of the city of Mitchell on Indiana Highway 60. It contains a settler's village, the Gus Grissom Memorial (with the accompanying Gemini 3 space capsule), a nature's center, and campgrounds. The park is located on the Mitchell Karst Plain, which allowed the park's caves and sinkholes to form in the limestone. The caves include Bronson Cave, Twin Caves, Shawnee Cave (Donaldson Cave), Hamer Cave, and others. A boat tour of Twin Caves is run by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which travels about 500 feet (150 m) into the cave. A portion of the park is virgin timber, protected in the Donaldson Woods Nature Preserve. The Mitchell Karst Plain Nature Preserve is notable for its large number of sinkholes, more than 1000 per square mile. Many of the park's features were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, including the Spring Mill Inn, Spring Mill Lake, and most of the trails. The park attracts about 675,000 visitors annually.

Shawnee Cave

Shawnee Cave (also called Donaldson Cave or Donaldson-Bronson Cave) is located in Spring Mill State Park in the state of Indiana. Access to the cave is controlled by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Shawnee Cave is the last of three underground passages, totaling just over 8,000 feet, of a stream that originates southeast of the park, and flows through Twin Caves and Bronson Cave, within the park. Shawnee Cave can be entered through the Bronson Cave Entrance and exited via the Donaldson Entrance. The passage connecting Twin Caves to Bronson Cave is extremely dangerous and is off limits. The Indiana DNR has lifted the ban on access to the cave, that was previously imposed to battle White nose syndrome, which is contracted by bats. Access to Shawnee cave is arranged through the Indiana Karst Conservancy via their web page.

Twin Caves

Twin Caves is a pair of cave entrances connected by a short river at the bottom of a sinkhole within the boundaries of Spring Mill State Park in Lawrence County, Indiana. The river is an exposed section of a mostly-underground stream that originates as Mosquito Creek several miles southeast of the park, which sinks into the Upper Twin Cave system. The stream then comes out briefly at Twin Caves, and flows into the Lower Twin Cave, re-emerging briefly at Bronson Cave shortly to the northwest, then flowing into the Shawnee Cave System. The stream finally emerges at the Donaldson Cave entrance as a short tributary of Mill Creek, still within the park. The park offers boat tours from Twin Caves, into the southern cave entrance (Upper Twin Cave). The tours last 20 minutes and go upstream about 500 feet (150 m) into the cave, then turn around due to the rest of the cave system belonging to the Indiana Karst Conservancy. The tours are operated by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and are seasonal from Memorial Day to October. The Shawnee (Bronson-Donaldson) Cave and Upper Twin Cave have reopened to registered groups, after a closure of several years due to white nose syndrome (WNS).
