The Avonworth School District is a small, suburban, public school district located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Avonworth School District encompasses approximately 11 square miles. The district serves the Boroughs of Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, and Emsworth and Kilbuck Township and Ohio Township. According to 2020 federal census data, it serves a resident population of 12,194 people. In 2009, the district residents' per capita income was $27,781 a year, while the median family income was $62,331. According to the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, 5-year estimates, the district's per capital income was $48,009 per year and the median family income was $93,561.The district operates four schools: Avonworth High School (9th–12th), Avonworth Middle School (7th–8th), Avonworth Elementary School (3rd-6th), and Avonworth Primary Center (K-2nd).

Emsworth Locks and Dam

Emsworth Locks and Dam is a combination of locks and dam on the Ohio River located just downstream of Pittsburgh. The dam has two gated sections, one on each side of Neville Island. There are two locks, one for commercial barge traffic that is 600 feet long by 110 feet wide, and the recreational auxiliary lock that is 360 feet long by 56 feet wide. Emsworth averages about 470 commercial lock throughs every month and 350-400 lock throughs a month on the recreational auxiliary lock.

Dixmont State Hospital

Dixmont State Hospital (originally the Department of the Insane in the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh) was a hospital located northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1862, Dixmont was once a state-of-the-art institution known for its highly self-sufficient and park-like campus, but a decline in funding for state hospitals and changing philosophies in psychiatric care caused the hospital to be closed in 1984. After more than two decades of abandonment, it was demolished in 2006. The campus spanned a total of 407 acres (165 ha). Reed Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
