Riffelalp

The Riffelalp tram (German: Riffelalptram, RiT) is a high altitude tramway line located in the Swiss canton of Valais near the resort of Zermatt. The line links the Riffelalp Resort to Riffelalp station, on the Gornergrat railway, and via that line to Zermatt and beyond. The Riffelalp tram is the highest tram line in Europe.

Findelbach is a railway station on the Gornergrat railway, which links the resort of Zermatt with the summit of the Gornergrat. The station is situated in the municipality of Zermatt, in the Swiss canton of Valais, at an altitude of 1,770 m (5,810 ft) above mean sea level.A freight station is situated at the end of a short branch line from Findelbach.

Riffelberg is a railway station on the Gornergrat railway, a rack railway which links the resort of Zermatt with the summit of the Gornergrat. The station is situated west of the Gornergrat, in the Swiss municipality of Zermatt and canton of Valais, at an altitude of 2,582 m (8,471 ft) above mean sea level. It is the third highest station on the line and, considering only open-air railway stations, the third highest in Switzerland and Europe as well. The Hotel Riffelberg is located at the station.

Winkelmatten is a suburb of Zermatt, Switzerland. It was once a separate small hamlet, but as Zermatt has grown it has become incorporated within the greater conurbation.

Zermatt (German pronunciation: [t͡sɛʁˈmat] (listen)) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It has a year-round population of about 5,800 and is classified as a town by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO). It lies at the upper end of Mattertal at an elevation of 1,620 m (5,310 ft), at the foot of Switzerland's highest peaks. It lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the over 3,292 m (10,801 ft) high Theodul Pass bordering Italy. Zermatt is the southernmost commune of the German Sprachraum. Zermatt is famed as a mountaineering and ski resort of the Swiss Alps. Until the mid-19th century, it was predominantly an agricultural community; the first and tragic ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 was followed by a rush on the mountains surrounding the village, leading to the construction of many tourist facilities. The year-round population (as of December 2020) is 5,820, though there may be several times as many tourists in Zermatt at any one time. Much of the local economy is based on tourism, with about half of the jobs in town in hotels or restaurants and just under half of all apartments are vacation apartments. Just over one-third of the permanent population was born in the town, while another third moved to Zermatt from outside Switzerland.

The Matterhorn Museum in Zermatt is a cultural-natural museum whose main theme is the Matterhorn. The museum is in the form of a reconstituted mountain village consisting of 14 houses (church, hotel, huts and granaries), and relates the history and development of tourism in the Zermatt area, including the story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and party. The museum displays one of the two stones that Claude Nicollier took from the summit and brought with him on the Space Shuttle Endeavour STS-61 mission in 1993. The other stone was put back on the summit.

The Sunnegga Paradise is a ski area that forms part of the Zermatt ski resort, in Valais, Switzerland. The area relating to skiing is found on the Rothorn mountain, above the town of Zermatt. The trails extend to the valley floor between the Rothorn and Gornergrat mountains, and includes the ski runs directly down to the Oberhausern area of the town of Zermatt, terminating at the passenger lift that takes skier directly down inside the funicular train station in the area. The Sunnegga area catches a large amount of sun due to its unique topography, often despite the rest of Zermatt being submerged in cloud.

Furi is a alpine hamlet in the Pennine Alps, located three kilometers south of Zermatt, Switzerland at an altitude of 1,687m. It is located on a relatively flat area of land between the Gornera and Zmuttbach rivers.Furi has been connected to Zermatt by cable car since the 1950s and is now also connected by a gondola lift. The largest lift junction in the area, cable cars and gondolas travel to Riffelberg, Schwarzsee, Trockener Steg and the Klein Matterhorn. The cable car to Furgg was dismantled in 2003. Located 700 metres South of Furi above the Gornera river is the Furi suspension bridge, which allows access to the Dossen Glacier Garden.

The Monte Rosa is a hotel, located in the main street of Zermatt. It was frequented by the members of the Alpine Club, including Edward Whymper who made the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. The hotel is named after the highest mountain near Zermatt, Monte Rosa.

Zum See is a hamlet in the canton of Valais. It is located above Zermatt at a height of 1,766 metres (5,794 ft), between the rivers Zmuttbach and Gornera, at the foot the Matterhorn. The hamlet includes a chapel and a gastronomic restaurant. Zum See can be reached by foot only, from Zermatt or from the Furi cable car station, located just above the hamlet.

The Zermatt–Sunnegga Funicular, also known as the Standseilbahn Zermatt–Sunnegga, or short SunneggaExpress, is an underground funicular railway in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It links a lower station in the resort village of Zermatt, with an upper station at 2293 m Sunnegga, 698 m above, and forms the first link in the route to the Sunnegga Paradise ski area. The funicular was heavily modernized by Doppelmayr in 2013.The line has the following properties: The funicular is operated by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG since 2002, after it absorded Standseilbahn Zermatt-Sunnegga AG that built it.
