Franschhoek Pass

Franschhoek ([fransˈɦuk]; Afrikaans for "French Corner", Dutch spelling before 1947 Fransche Hoek) is a small town in the Western Cape Province and one of the oldest towns in South Africa. It was formerly known as Oliphants hoek (as there were vast groups of elephants roaming the valley). It is situated about 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Cape Town, a 45-minute drive away. The whole area, including townships such as Groendal and suburbs such as Wemmershoek, has a population of slightly over 20,000 people while the town proper, known as Hugenote, has a population of around 1,000. Since 2000, it has been incorporated into Stellenbosch Municipality. In 2022, Franschhoek was mentioned in Time magazine as one of the top 50 places in the world to visit.

Huguenot Memorial Museum portrays the history of the French Huguenots who came to South Africa at the end of the seventeenth century. Displays are housed in the main building, and continue in the annex. The museum also has a shop, and is adjacent to the Huguenot Monument.

Le Quartier Français is a restaurant and hotel in Franschhoek, South Africa near Stellenbosch. The property has thirteen rooms, eight suites and a cottage that overlook a landscaped garden with a natural pool.The restaurant ranked 36th best restaurant in the world in Restaurant magazine's Top 50 in 2011. From 1996-2017, the head chef was Margot Janse. It is regarded as the best restaurant in Africa and the Middle East.

The Dutch Reformed Church is a Dutch Reformed church in Franschhoek, South Africa. The church was built in 1847 and is situated on the main road running through the town. This valley, tightly hemmed in by mountains, is named after the French Huguenots who fled to the Cape after religious persecution in 1688. They brought with them knowledge of viniculture and settled to make wine. In 1923 a new organ was purchased at a cost of £1,200 (equivalent to £212,400 in 2013 or about R3,800,00 in 2013). In 1926, the presbytery completely renovated which also involved substantial costs for the church with it. From 1929 on services in the church were held in Afrikaans instead of Dutch. The first Afrikaans church council minutes dating from December 1929 From 1933 uses Afrikaans Bibles and from 1937 used with an Afrikaans Psalter. In the years 1967 and 1968 the building was extensively restored at a cost of R60,000 (equivalent to roughly R5,000,000 in 2013) with restorations completed on 16 and 17 November 1968. An earthquake occurred a year later causing only minor damage to the building due to the restoration work completed the previous year. The building was declared Nasionale Memorable in 1972. During the ministry of Rev. Muller. In 1975, the building is equipped with a sound system.

Haute Cabrière is a vineyard estate located in Franschhoek, South Africa. The estate was started over 300 years ago by Huguenot settlers from France, including Pierre Jourdan, and primarily grows Chardonnay and Pinot noir varietals. The current iteration dates to the 1980s when it was established by the Von Arnim family and the wine cellar and restaurant were remodeled in 2019.

Robertsvlei is a settlement in Cape Winelands District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

Leopard's Leap is a wine producer located in South Africa. They are located in the valley of Franschhoek. The business was established by Hein Koegelenberg at the turn of the 20th century.The winery has sponsored satellite mapping as part of a wider study of leopards in the nearby mountains. The wine estate also has motion sensor cameras around the vineyards that have detected several remaining leopards in the area.In recent years, the winery has been increasingly exporting large quantities of wine to China. Along with La Motte and L’Huguenot (also owned by Koegelenberg) it was reported that over 3 million bottles are exported.In December 2020, a bottle of Leopard's Leap was snatched by an actual leopard from a safari park.

The Berg River Dam is a 68-metre (223 ft) high dam on the Berg River in South Africa. It is the centerpiece of the Berg Water Project (BWP) which is designed to capture the winter rainfall and store it for supply to Cape Town during the dry summer months. The project in turn forms an important part of the Western Cape Water Supply System (WCWSS), an intricate system of dams and bulk water infrastructure that provides water to more than 3 million people. At the inauguration of the dam in 2009, then President of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe called the project "a good example of how public infrastructure projects can be used to contribute meaningfully to poverty eradication and to foster social empowerment of the people." The Berg River Dam was the first dam in South Africa to be designed and constructed in accordance with the guidelines of the World Commission on Dams. It has been completed on time and within budget. The Berg River basin and the adjacent metropolitan area of Cape Town are of particular importance to the Western Cape region because, although the basin generates only about 3% of the country's water resources, it is home to about 8% of South Africa's population, and produces about 12% of GDP.The Berg River Dam (Autshumato Dam) was completed in 2007 at cost of R1,5 billion. It was designed and built in accordance with the United Nations World Commission on Dams, to provide water for Cape Town.

The Wemmers River is a river near Franschhoek in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Wemmershoek Dam is a rock-fill type dam located on the Wemmershoek River near Franschhoek and Paarl in South Africa. It was constructed between 1953 and 1957 on behalf of the City of Cape Town. With a reservoir capacity of 58,644 megalitres (2,071.0×10^6 cu ft), it provides approximately 6.5% of the storage capacity of the Western Cape Water Supply System which supplies Cape Town and surrounding areas.

Wemmershoek is a settlement in Cape Winelands District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Wemmershoek is a small village at the junction of the R301 and R45 roads. The Wemmershoek Dam on the Wemmershoek River was established in 1957.

Bridge House School, commonly referred to as Bridge House, is a school in South Africa. It is located in the Cape Winelands close to Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, and is an independent day and boarding school for over eight hundred girls and boys from Playschool to Grade 12 .
