Candelaria, Tenerife

The Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias (in English Square of the Saint Patron of the Canary Islands) is a large square in Candelaria, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It is next to the Basilica of Candelaria, a meeting place of pilgrims and festivities celebrating the most important of the municipality. In this square there are also various bars and cafes. This square is considered one of the "main squares" of the island of Tenerife, together with the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

The Basilica of the Royal Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria (Spanish: Basílica y Real Santuario Mariano de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria or simply Basílica de la Candelaria) is a Roman Catholic minor basilica, the first Marian shrine of the Canary Islands, located in the municipality and city of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It is located some 20 km (12 mi) south of the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria (Patron of the Canary Islands). Designed by architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado, it is listed as a Site of cultural interest by the Government of the Canary Islands. The Virgin of Candelaria is a black Madonna.

Cueva de Achbinico, also called cave of San Blas (Spanish: cueva de Achbinico) is a Roman Catholic church and cave located in Candelaria, Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). After the conquest of the Canary Islands it was the first Christian sanctuary of religious significance. It was also the first sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Canary Islands, where the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary islands, was worshipped.

Cave-Shrine of Chinguaro is a Roman Catholic church and cave located in Güímar on Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). It was the traditional palace of the Guanche King of the Menceyato de Güímar, Acaimo. In this cave, the ancient Guanches worshiped the Virgin of Candelaria (Patron Saint of the Canary Islands) as the goddess Chaxiraxi of their traditional faith. This deity was worshiped in the Canary Islands until the Castillian conquest of the archipelago. The icon was later identified with the Virgin Mary and was moved by the Guanches themselves to the Cave of Achbinico in Candelaria. This cave was the first shrine devoted to the Virgin of Candelaria, and the first aboriginal Guanche shrine to contain a Christian idol in the Canary Islands. However, the Guanches at the time still generally adhered to their traditional religion. The cave is also a place of great archaeological importance.

Malpaís de Güímar or Badlands of Guimar consist of a volcanic cone, subsidiary cones, and several basaltic lava flows in the Güímar municipality on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, Spain. They total in area about 290 hectares. The lava flows are quite recent, with the typical ʻaʻā type less than 10,000 years old. The large cone is called Montaña Grande (Big Mountain) and reaches a height of 276 m (906 ft).

Arafo is a municipality of the southeastern part of the island of Tenerife in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the Canary Islands. The town Arafo is situated 5 km west of the coast town Candelaria and 22 km southwest of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The TF-1 motorway passes through the eastern part of the municipality.

The Pyramids of Güímar are six rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures built from lava stone without the use of mortar. They are located in the district of Chacona, part of the town of Güímar on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The structures have been dated to the 19th century AD and they may originally have been a byproduct of contemporary agricultural techniques. These pyramids stand as high as 12m. Other pyramids employing the same methods and materials of construction can be found in various sites on Tenerife. In Güímar itself there were nine pyramids, only six of which survive.

Güímar (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈgwimaɾ]) is the name of a municipality, town and valley in the eastern part of the Spanish island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, and part of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (province). The municipality extends for 102.9 square kilometers from the mountainous interior to the beaches on the Atlantic, and borders the municipalities of La Orotava, Arafo and Fasnia. Its estimated population is 18,589 (2013). The TF-1 motorway passes through the municipality. The municipality is famous for its pyramids. It is also the location of the barranco de Badajoz. A portion of its volcanic landscape has been set aside as the Nature reserve of Malpaís of Güímar, its highest point being Montaña Grande.

Valle de Güímar is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located along the south-eastern coastline of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), and acquired its DO in 1996.

Dan-Air Flight 1008 was a fatal accident involving a Boeing 727-46 jet aircraft operated by Dan Air Services Limited on an unscheduled international passenger service from Manchester to Tenerife. The accident occurred on 25 April 1980 in a forest on Tenerife's Mount La Esperanza when the aircraft's flight deck crew wrongly executed an unpublished holding pattern in an area of very high ground; it resulted in the aircraft's destruction and the deaths of all 146 on board (138 passengers and eight crew).: 4  Flight 1008 was Dan-Air's second major accident in ten years and the worst accident involving the deaths of fare-paying passengers in the airline's entire history. and the sixth deadliest involving a Boeing 727.
