Cefn Saeson

The Gnoll Country Park (or Gnoll Estate) is a park in Wales. It is an early-18th-century landscaped garden covering over 100 acres (0.40 km2) in the Vale of Neath, in Neath Port Talbot county borough in south Wales. The park is designated Grade II* on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.

Cimla is a village and suburb of the town of Neath in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales. It is set high up on a hill. It is pronounced Kim-la. The Welsh language spelling is Cymla, pronounced the same way. Its meaning is a place with common land, which it presumably (being land on a hill above previous settlement) was until industrial expansion led to its being covered with housing. Cimla consists of a residential area in the western central area, which is part of the built-up area of the town of Neath. The residential area is surrounded to the north, east, and south by open moorland. The whole of Cimla is set on high ground. It is home to the Cimla football club, formed in 1983, who play their games on Cefn Saeson playing fields. English is the most spoken language, with Welsh having minimal use. Cimla is Neath’s richest area, with an above average wage per person compared with the rest of the town. Cefn Saeson (the name of the farm area and secondary school) is said to derive from the fact that this area was once the historic England and Wales border. The name Cefn Saeson translates to “English Ridge”. There is also rumoured to be a Cimla castle near the Cefn Saeson farm. This is believed due to old Gnoll estate maps from 1812 naming the surrounding field “castle field”.

The Efail Fach television relay station is sited on a hill west of the villages of Efail Fach, Cwm Pelenna and Tonmawr. It was originally built in the 1980s as a fill-in relay for UHF analogue colour television serving all of those settlements. It consists of a 15 m self-supporting lattice mast standing on a hill which is itself about 160 m above sea level. The transmissions are beamed to the east towards the Pelenna valley. The Efail Fach transmission station is owned and operated by Arqiva. The "Transmission Gallery" site claims that the Efail Fach transmitter re-radiates the signal received off-air from Cilfrew television relay station near Neath, itself a repeater of Kilvey Hill at Swansea. However, Efail Fach used the same frequencies as Cilfrew in the analogue TV days, and shares two frequencies with Cilfrew in the digital TV era. OFCOM claims that the site re-radiates Kilvey Hill directly. Efail Fach does indeed have a clear line-of-sight to Kilvey Hill (which is about 11.6 km away at a bearing of 259.5°). When it came, the digital switchover process for Efail Fach duplicated the timing at the Kilvey Hill parent station, with the first stage taking place on Wednesday 12 August 2009 and the second stage was completed on Wednesday 9 September 2009, with the Kilvey Hill transmitter-group becoming the first in Wales to complete digital switchover. After the switchover process, analogue channels had ceased broadcasting permanently and the Freeview digital TV services were radiated at an ERP of 2 W each.

Cilfrew television relay station is sited on a hill south of the village of Tonna, at least 2 km across the valley from Cilfrew in the Neath Valley. It was originally built in 1981 as a fill-in relay for UHF analogue colour television serving the villages of Cilfrew itself, Aberdulais and Tonna. It consists of a 30 m self-supporting lattice mast standing on land which is itself about 80 m above sea level. The transmissions are beamed to the north. The Cilfrew transmission station is owned and operated by Arqiva. Cilfrew transmitter re-radiates the signal received off-air from Kilvey Hill about 12 km to the southwest. When it came, the digital switchover process for Cilfrew duplicated the timing at the parent station, with the first stage taking place on Wednesday 12 August 2009 and the second stage was completed on Wednesday 9 September 2009, with the Kilvey Hill transmitter-group becoming the first in Wales to complete digital switchover. Mynydd-y-Gaer is a hill that sits on the boundaries between the South Wales communities of Baglan (south-western quarter), Cwmavon (south-eastern quarter) and Briton Ferry, (northern half), all within Neath Port Talbot county borough. The summit, at 314 m (1,030 ft), has grassland fields subdivided by dry stone walls. Foel Fynyddau lies 2 km to east. To the south is the coastal plain of the Bristol Channel. To the West is the Vale of Neath. To the north is the Crythan Brook and the town of Neath. It has numerous prehistoric monuments, and evidence of occupation in medieval times, as well as 19th and 20th century coalmining.

Buarth-y-Gaer (pronounced [ˈbɪ.arθ ə ɡɑːɨr]) is an Iron Age hillfort or enclosure on the summit of Mynydd-y-Gaer, 300 m (980 ft) above sea level. It is in Briton Ferry community, near Neath, in Neath Port Talbot, South Wales. A large hilltop enclosure is bounded by a single bank and ditch. Within the enclosed area is a Bronze Age burial mound.

The Gnoll (Welsh: Y Gnol) in Neath, Wales is a sports ground, with a capacity of 6,000 (formerly 15,000). It is used primarily for rugby union and cricket, although it has also been used previously for association football and rugby league. The stadium has hosted international rugby matches, with it being the home ground of the Wales women's national rugby union team, and men's matches included one during the 2013 Rugby League World Cup against the Cook Islands.

Tonna (Welsh: Tonnau) is the name of a village and community in Neath Port Talbot, Wales, located to the north-east of Neath. Immediately between Tonna and the adjoining parish of Llanilltud ("Llantwit-juxta-Neath") is a cottage once occupied by the Welsh-born engineer and naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who had arrived at his theory of evolution independently of Charles Darwin, with whom he later corresponded. Eventually Wallace and Darwin jointly presented the first paper on Natural Selection to the Linnean Society. The village's rugby union team is Tonna RFC.

Neath South is an electoral ward of Neath Port Talbot county borough, Wales falling in the community of Neath. Neath South consists of some or all of the settlements of Cimla and Mount Pleasant in the parliamentary constituency of Neath. It is bounded by the wards of Neath East to the west; Neath North to the north; and Cimla to the east.

Aberdylais halt railway station served the village of Aberdulais in Wales. It was located on the line from Neath to Merthyr Tydfil.

Penscynor Halt railway station served the village of Cilfrew, in the historical county of Glamorganshire, Wales, from 1929 to 1962 on the Neath and Brecon Railway.

The Victoria Gardens, in the town centre of Neath, Wales, is a Grade II registered park on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.Neath Borough Council purchased two hectares of land in the centre of Neath in 1856 to provide an open space for the people of Neath. Called the Corporation Fields, various events were held there, including cricket and rugby matches and the annual Great September Fair until 1897, when it became a formal park to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The gardens were designed by a local man, Thomas Snow, and were officially opened on 22 June 1897, the date of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, by the then mayor of Neath, Arthur Russell Thomas, and officially re-opened as Victoria Gardens on 30 June 1898 by the mayor Abraham George.It has been described as "a quintessential Victorian urban public park", and has most of its original layout and features intact, including a Grade II listed bandstand and inclined flowers beds displaying carpet bedding designs. Other features include a bronze statue of Howel Gwyn, Gorsedd stones, a drinking fountain, and a Spanish Civil War memorial.During his teens, notable former Neath resident Harry Parr-Davies regularly visited the gardens to compose music.
