Horst-Janssen-Museum is an art museum located in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is dedicated to the work of Horst Janssen, the draftsman, etcher, lithographer, wood engraver, poster artist and illustrator.The Horst-Janssen-Museum was opened in 2000, showing 1,800 pieces from the collection of the couple Carin and Carl Vogel. In 1995, the Oldenburg entrepreneur Hüppe acquired the Janssen collection for 1.5 million DM. The various facets of Janssen's art are shown in a permanent exhibition. Changing exhibitions show works of artists that influenced Janssen, such as Goya, Rembrandt, and Egon Schiele. Additional drawings and prints from the collection can be viewed on request. A library contains 25,000 volumes, including publications of Janssen.The Claus Hüppe Foundation awards at regular intervals the Horst Janssen Print Prize. It has been awarded to Katja Eckert (2003), Daniel Roth (2005) and Anna Lea Hucht (2008).The museum shares its entrance with the co-located Stadtmuseum Oldenburg, which covers the history of Oldenburg.

The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg (German: Großherzogtum Oldenburg, also known as Holstein-Oldenburg) was a grand duchy within the German Confederation, North German Confederation and German Empire, that consisted of three widely separated territories: Oldenburg, Eutin and Birkenfeld. It ranked tenth among the German states, had one vote in the Bundesrat, and three members in the Reichstag. Its ruling family, the House of Oldenburg, also came to rule in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Greece, Russia and United Kingdom.

Oldenburg (German pronunciation: [ˈɔldn̩bʊʁk] ) is an independent city in the state of Lower Saxony, Germany. The city is officially named Oldenburg (Oldb) (Oldenburg in Oldenburg) to distinguish from Oldenburg in Holstein. During the French annexation (1811–1813) in the wake of the Napoleonic war against Britain, it was also known as Le Vieux-Bourg in French. The city is at the rivers Hunte and Haaren, in the northwestern region between the cities of Bremen in the east and Groningen (Netherlands) in the west. It has a population of 170,000 (November 2019). Oldenburg is part of the Northwest Metropolitan Region, with 2.37 million people. The city is the place of origin of the House of Oldenburg. Before the end of the German Empire (1918), it was the administrative centre and residence of the monarchs of Oldenburg.

The Duchy of Oldenburg (German: Herzogtum Oldenburg) named after its capital, the town of Oldenburg was a state in the north-west of present-day Germany. The counts of Oldenburg died out in 1667, after which it became a duchy until 1810, when it was annexed by the First French Empire. It was located near the mouth of the River Weser. When the main lineage of the House of Oldenburg died out in 1667 with Anthony Günther, Count of Oldenburg, it fell to the Frederick III of Denmark of the line of the Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp, who married Grand Duchess Anna Petrovna of Russia, daughter of Peter the Great. Another, his first cousin, Frederick August I, became Duke of Oldenburg in 1774. One of his brothers, Adolf Frederick, became King of Sweden. Another brother, Prince Georg Ludwig of Holstein-Gottorp, was father of Peter I, who became Grand Duke of Oldenburg in 1823. Subsequent Rulers of Oldenburg were all his descendants. Its ruling family, the House of Oldenburg, also came to rule in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Greece and Russia. The heirs of a junior line of the Greek branch are, through Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, are the rulers in thrones of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Free State of Oldenburg (German: Freistaat Oldenburg) was a federated state of the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. It was established in 1918 during the German revolution following the abdication of Grand Duke Frederick Augustus II of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. The Allies of World War II abolished the Free State in 1946 as part of the reorganization of the German states. Its main territory, including the capital Oldenburg, became part of the West German state of Lower Saxony; its northern exclave was joined to Schleswig-Holstein and the southern exclave became part of Rhineland-Palatinate. Oldenburg came relatively peacefully through the revolutionary period that followed World War I. An attempt to set up a soviet-style council republic failed when the existing government forestalled the move by quickly setting up an interim State Executive Committee after the Grand Duke abdicated. An elected constituent state assembly then wrote a republican constitution for the Free State of Oldenburg and approved it in June 1919. Oldenburg's first government was a center-left coalition that lasted until 1923. After that, deadlocks in the Free State's parliament resulted in governments led by non-partisan technocrats until the Nazi Party won a majority in the 1932 election.

The Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst ("Edith Russ House") is an art gallery in the city of Oldenburg, Gurkaran Singh, Germany, dedicated to new media art.The gallery was founded due to an endowment from Edith Russ, a secondary school teacher in Oldenburg. It does not have a permanent collection but presents temporary exhibitions and associated events. The building is close to the Peter-Friedrich-Ludwig-Hospital, a cultural centre and former hospital, located to the southwest.

Lappan is a historic bell tower in the city of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany.The tower is the oldest scheduled landmark in Oldenburg. It is 35m high with a Renaissance dome and survived the fire of 1676 in Oldenburg. The tower once belonged to the Holy Spirit Hospital. In 1709, the previous shingle roof was replaced by a copper dome.

The Peter Friedrich Ludwig Hospital (aka Kulturzentrum PFL) is cultural centre and former hospital in the city of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany.The hospital was started in 1838 and the building was completed in 1841. It was named after Grand Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig, who had a number of buildings erected in the Classicistic style during his reign. SInce 1984, the building has been used as a cultural centre with a library and cultural events. To the northeast is the Edith-Russ-Haus a new media art gallery.

The Haus "Graf Anton Günther" (aka Hotel Graf Anton Günther) is a historic house in central Oldenburg, Germany, dating from 1682.Count Anton Günther is depicted riding a horse on the facade, which was redesigned in the neo-Renaissance style in 1894. The house was used by merchants and tobacco manufacturers. After the great fire in Oldenburg, the building was constructed in 1682 as a merchant's house on the Lange Straße. For 135 years it belonged to the Grovermann family. In 1828, it was bought by Hinrich Lebrecht Kirchhoff. In 1838, the tobacco manufacturer Johann Karl Propping acquired the property. Propping built a tobacco factory designed by the architect Klingenberg. The house changed hands several times in the 1890s until it was bought by the Hoyer brewery. The house became a restaurant and hotel in 1894 and was named "Graf Anton Günther". Professor August Oetken created the large exterior fresco of Count Anton Günther on his horse, Kranich.

The Oldenburg Computer Museum (OCM) is a museum founded in 2008 in Oldenburg (Oldb), Lower-Saxony, Germany that is dedicated to the preservation and operational presentation of the history of home computing.

The Botanischer Garten Oldenburg (3.7 hectares at its public site at Philosophenweg, plus 1.5 nonpublic hectares at Küpkersweg), more formally known as the Botanischer Garten der Carl von Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg, is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Oldenburg. Its public gardens are located at Philosophenweg 39, Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, and open daily without charge. The garden was established in 1882 as a teaching garden, enhanced in 1913, and in 1916 augmented by a systematic garden (still existing) of 1200 plant species from Oldenburg and East Frisia. Four geographic divisions were created in 1932 for Boreal, Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pontic species, with an additional area for species from the Central Mountains. Starting in 1933 the garden was administered by Oldenburg, and in 1951 it was taken up by Lower Saxony and extended to its current size. Its heath, marsh, dunes, and forest areas were redesigned in 1966, as well as the medicinal plant garden in 1967, and in 1968 a Department of Central and Southern German plant communities was created. In 1976 the garden was incorporated into the University of Oldenburg, and in 1984 today's nonpublic Küpkersweg site added. Through the 1990s, the alpine garden, Mediterranean collection, and medicinal garden were reorganized, and a new cactus house built. A new cottage garden was added in 2000, with heath, marsh, and dune areas again reworked in 2001. Today the garden is a scientific institution for teaching and research at the university.
