St. John's College, Colombo (Sinhala : ශාන්ත ජෝන් විද්‍යාලය) is a Government school for boys which is hosted by Western Provincial Council. In here about 1,100+ students are studying. This school was established on 16 January 1939 by Rev. Maurice John Legoc. The first principal was B. Wean Sander.

Nalanda College (Sinhala: නාලන්දා විද්‍යාලය) is a leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka where provides primary and secondary education for Sri Lankan boys. The school was established by P. de S. Kularatne as an offshoot of Ananda College Colombo and was registered as a separate school on 1 November 1924.

The Malalasekara Theater (Sinhala: මලලසේකර රඟහල) (also called Malalasekara Memorial Hall Nalanda College, Malalasekara Hall or Malalasekara Theater Hall), is the theatre hall of Nalanda College, located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is named in honour of professor Gunapala Malalasekera, Nalanda College's first registered principal following its establishment.

The Welikada Prison (also known as the Magazine Prison) is a maximum security prison and the largest prison in Sri Lanka. It was built in 1841 by the British colonial government under Governor Cameron. The prison covers an area of 48 acres (190,000 m2). It is overcrowded with about 1700 detainees exceeding the actual number that could be accommodated. The prison also has a gallows (unused since 1959) and its own hospital. The prison is administered by the Department of Prisons. Following the attempted military coup in 1962, the arrested military and police officers were remanded pending trial in a special section at Welikada prison called the Magazine Section. To guard these officers, a special security detachment called the composite guard was selected from the Ceylon Light Infantry, with Major A Hulangamuwa in charge.

The attack on the Magazine prison was an attack carried by Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya (Patriotic People's Movement), the armed wing of the JVP which was staging a rebellion within Sri Lanka.

The Department of Prisons (Sinhala: බන්ධනාගාර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව Bandhanagara Departhamenthuwa) is a department of the Government of Sri Lanka responsible for the incarceration and rehabilitation of convicted criminal offenders and terror suspects, coming under the purview of the Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs. The Commissioner-General of Prisons reports to the Subject Minister, who is in turn responsible to the Parliament of Sri Lanka. The current Commissioner-General of Prisons is Thushara Upuldeniya.

The Welikada prison riot was a prison riot that occurred on 9 November 2012 at Welikada Prison in Sri Lanka. The riot broke out during a search for illegal arms. The riot left 27 people dead and 40 injured. The government has appointed a committee to investigate the riot. Welikada Prison, which has around 4,000 prisoners, has witnessed a number of violent riots in its history. This prison riot was the worst in Sri Lanka's history since the 1983 riot, also at Welikada Prison, which left 53 prisoners dead.

Wesley College, Colombo, popularly known as "Wesley" or "The Double Blues" is a school providing primary and secondary education in Sri Lanka since 1874. Wesley College is a Methodist educational institution.

The Maligawatta stampede was a fatal incident which occurred on 21 May 2020, near a Muslim Jumma residence in Maligawatta, Colombo-10, amid lockdown and curfew which was imposed in the area due to COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The incident happened around 1:00pm while charity donation program was conducted to distribute money for the Maligawatta area residents on the eve of Ramadan.

Maligawatta is a suburb in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Maligawatta is located approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) north-east from the centre of Colombo, Colombo Fort. The name Maligawatta is from the Sinhalese language which translates into garden of the palace.The R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium is located in this area on Khettarama Road.
