Coamo, Puerto Rico

The Picó Pomar Residence, also known as Coamo Historic Museum, is a Spanish Colonial Neoclassical architecture building built in 1840, and is located on the main plaza of Coamo, Puerto Rico. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1988.It was purchased in 1863 by Don Clotilde Santiago, another merchant from Mallorca, who expanded it. During the late 1800s it was one of Puerto Rico's "most active and important import-export merchandise distribution centers and the most important in the south-central region of Puerto Rico." The business exported coffee, tobacco, and sugar, and imported manufactured goods from the U.S. and Europe. It was later purchased by Coamo's Municipal Government and transformed into a museum.

The Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Valvanera (English: Hermitage Church of Our Lady of Valvanera) is a historic church in Coamo, Puerto Rico. It was built in 1685 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The chapel is brick masonry and about 68 feet (21 m) by 34 feet (10 m).

La Casa Blanca (Spanish for 'white house'), also known as the Efrén Bernier Residence, is a Spanish creole-style historic residence building located at 17 José I. Quintón Street in Coamo Pueblo (downtown Coamo), the historical and administrative center of the Puerto Rican municipality of Coamo. The house dates to 1865 with further modifications made in 1874. The building was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1992.

The Iglesia San Blas de Illescas (English: Church of Saint Blaise of Illescas) is a Catholic parish church located on the center plaza of Coamo, Puerto Rico. Construction on the church began in 1661; it has since been judged "one of the most important works of religious architecture in Puerto Rico".The church is separated from the open plaza below by a series of ceremonial steps and a delicate cast iron balustrade. The delicately curved Baroque facade reflects a major reconstruction completed in 1784. A two-level bell-gable with open arches and bells is prominently featured in the facade. The parish of San Blas of Coamo is one of the oldest on the island.

Coamo barrio-pueblo is a barrio and the administrative center (seat) of Coamo, a municipality of Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 6,685.As was customary in Spain, in Puerto Rico, the municipality has a barrio called pueblo which contains a central plaza, the municipal buildings (city hall), and a Catholic church. Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central plaza every year.

Padre Íñigo Bridge (Spanish: Puente Padre Íñigo), also known as the Coamo Bridge (Puente de Coamo) or Bridge #174, is a historic lattice girder bridge that crosses the Coamo River in the municipality of the same name in southern Puerto Rico. It was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1995.The bridge, built between 1853 and 1879, is the earliest extant multi-span lattice girder bridge and the only one with continuous girders in Puerto Rico. Its foundations consist of precious wood piles 3 meters deep. Designed by engineer Raymundo Campubri, a noted builder-designer, it was manufactured by Eugene Rollin & Co. in Belgium for 29,590 francs. The 70-ton structure was brought from Europe aboard the ship Galeon. The bridge was built as part of the old Carretera Central, the first highway across the Cordillera Central mountain range. The bridge is now only open to pedestrians and a new bridge built in 1983 bypasses it today.

Edwin "Puruco" Nolasco Coliseum (Spanish: Coliseo Edwin "Puruco" Nolasco) is an indoor sporting arena located in Coamo, Puerto Rico. The coliseum opened in 1985 and was renovated in 1999. The coliseum's seating capacity is 5,000 seats. It is used mostly for basketball as the home arena of the Maratonistas de Coamo.

The General Méndez Vigo Bridge is a brick barrel vault bridge that brings what is now Puerto Rico Highway 14 across the Río Las Minas near Coamo, Puerto Rico. Also known as Bridge #173 and as Puente Rio las Minas, it was built in the year 1862 as part of Puerto Rico's Carretera Central. The bridge is historically significant for its association with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its role in the Spanish–American War of 1898. It is also the only surviving masonry bridge in the southern section of the Carretera Central.In the Puerto Rican Campaign, American forces landed in the south of Puerto Rico and attacked up the Carretera Central. This bridge, like some others, was destroyed by Spanish troops under Commander Rafael Martinez-Illescas to delay the American troops, which worked; a battalion of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment, part of a U.S. Army column commanded by Major General James H. Wilson, approaching from Ponce, Puerto Rico, was held up. The Wisconsin troops subsequently participated in a pincer movement at the Battle of Coamo in which Martinez-Illescas was killed. The destroyed arch was rebuilt in 1898 by the US Corps of Engineers. Keystones of the arch "embody its history": one side shows a castle, the symbol of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the other provides inscription that it was reconstructed in 1898 by the First Regiment of the Fifth Battalion of the Corps. The arch is otherwise decorated by geometrical designs in relief. Abutments of the bridge are from the 1862 original construction.The bridge is named for General Santiago Mendez Vigo, who was governor of Puerto Rico, for Spain, during 1840 to 1844. It was designed by engineer Timoteo Luberza and cost 15,405 pesos.It is located near kilometer 30.4 of Route 14.
