South Chesapeake City Historic District

Chesapeake City is a town in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. The population was 736 at the 2020 census. The town was originally named by Bohemian colonist Augustine Herman the Village of Bohemia — or Bohemia Manor — but the name was changed in 1839 after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal) was built in 1829. Today, the town contains numerous old homes from that era that have been converted into bed and breakfasts, restaurants and the local historical museum.

The Old Lock Pump House on the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal was one of the first National Historic Landmarks to recognize an engineering achievement rather than an important building or a place associated with an historic event. The pump house, whose first element was built in 1837, preserves a feature of the old canal, which relied on locks and pumps to move vessels over the low divide of the Delmarva Peninsula between Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay. Because there are no large rivers on the peninsula, water had to be pumped uphill to fill the upper canal and locks. When the canal was cut deeper in the twentieth century, such measures were no longer required, and the pump house is one of the last relics of the old canal.

Bohemia Manor High School is a public school operated by Cecil County Public Schools located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the small town of Chesapeake City in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. This is a small school of 685 students which shares its campus with Bohemia Manor Middle School. This school serves the Maryland communities of Chesapeake City, Cecilton, Galena, Earleville and the parts of Elkton. The school is also known by the nickname Bo Manor.

St. Augustine is an unincorporated community in Cecil County, Maryland, United States.Land rights to the area were granted to merchant Augustine Herman by Lord Baltimore prior to 1686 but the Herman family was never able to lay proper claim to the title.Great House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Cornucopia, also known as the John and Mary Price Farm, is a historic home and farm located near Middletown, New Castle County, Delaware. The house was built about 1845, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, five-bay L-shaped frame dwelling with a gable roof in a vernacular Greek Revival style. It has a 1+1⁄2-story wing and features a tetra-style verandah on brick piers. Also on the property are the contributing meat/dairy house, crib barn, hay barn and cow barn attached by an implement shed, three poultry sheds, and an implement shed with a shop and wagon shed.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Poplar Hall is a historic home and farm located near Newark, New Castle County, Delaware. The property includes six contributing buildings. They are an 18th-century brick dwelling with its stone wing and five associated outbuildings. The house is a 2+1⁄2-story, gable-roofed, brick structure with a 2+1⁄2-story, cobblestone, gable-roofed wing. It was substantially remodeled in the mid-19th century in the Greek Revival style. Also on the property are a contributing 2+1⁄2-story crib barn (c. 1850), frame smokehouse, frame dairy, implement shed, and cow barn.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Fairview, also known as the George Harbert Farm, is a historic home and farm located near Middletown, New Castle County, Delaware. It was built about 1840 and is a two-story, five-bay, stuccoed brick dwelling in a subdued Greek Revival style. It has a hipped roof, a rear wing, and a center-passage plan.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Woodside is a historic home located at Mt. Pleasant, New Castle County, Delaware. It was built about 1860, and is a two- to three-story, five-bay, L-shaped brick dwelling with a center passage plan with a full-width front porch. It features hipped roof with widely overhanging eaves and elaborate brackets in the Italianate style. Also on the property are a contributing stable, granary, cattle/dairy barn, equipment shed and water tower. It was built by Henry Clayton, whose great-grandfather was Governor Joshua Clayton, president and governor of Delaware.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
