Alternative spellings include Cotton Dale, Kennedale, Kennidale and Konnidale.Cottondale was the site of cotton mills where the Knights of Labor had some success in organizing drives in the late 1880s; and where "Mother" Jones worked in 1904 while studying conditions for working women and children in the South. Little girls and boys, barefooted, walked up and down between the endless rows of spindles, reaching thin little hands into the machinery to repair snapped threads.... Tiny babies of six years old with faces of sixty did an eight-hour shift for ten cents a day.... The machines, built in the north, were built low for the hands of little children. Cottondale was originally called Kennedale in honor of Joseph Kennedy, one of the owners of a local cotton mill. In 1876, the name was changed to Cottondale for the cotton mill.

The Strode Mansion is the former residence of Hudson Strode. The residence includes the main house, a small caretaker's cabin, and a separate writing studio, as well as 27 acres (110,000 m2) of woodland. The Strodes bequeathed their residence to the University of Alabama's Department of English. The property is located at 49 Cherokee Road, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The home was designated a historic landmark by the Alabama Historical Association in 1987. These days, it is usually occupied by the director of the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies. In the past, it was assigned to notable visiting faculty. The caretaker's cabin ("Strode's Cabin") is occupied by a student from the University's Master of Fine Arts program.

The Tuscaloosa Transit Authority, or TTA, is a local, government-owned bus system based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that commenced operation in 1971. The Tuscaloosa Transit Authority serves the city of Tuscaloosa and also operates the trolleys between the student entertainment districts downtown and The Strip and game day shuttle buses for Alabama football games. The Tuscaloosa Transit Authority is governed by a seven member board, and employs a staff of 27 full-time employees as of February 2008. Beginning in 1999, the TTA's fleet consists of El Dorado Transmark RE buses that are designed to resemble historic trolleys that have been absent from Tuscaloosa since 1941.Ridership for the system averages approximately 16,000 per month, and the system as a whole has seen a 9 percent increase in ridership numbers for 2008 as compared to 2007.

WTBC (1230 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a sports radio format. Licensed to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, the station serves the greater Tuscaloosa area. The station is owned by Townsquare Media. It was also the first media position that James Spann ever had in the media. In May 2016, it was announced that Townsquare Media would be buying WTBC and sister station WNPT-FM (now WFMA) for $550,000. (Alabama Broadcast Media Page) According to published reports, WNPT-FM would go sports and WTBC would retain the Catfish Country format, once the new owners take over. Townsquare Media's purchase of the stations was consummated on July 15, 2016. As of this update, Catfish Country is now being heard exclusively on WTBC and translator W261BT, branded as Catfish 100.1. Under the ownership of Townsquare Media, WTBC provides regular weather coverage from WVUA in Tuscaloosa, under the direction of their Chief Meteorologist Richard Scott. During times of active severe, tropical, and Winter weather events, WTBC provides West Alabama's only live and local weather coverage on the radio, with local, in house, Staff Meteorologist Bobby Best. Additionally, under the ownership of Townsquare Media and the direction of Market President/Chief Revenue Officer David R. Dubose, WTBC also provides West Alabama radio's only live and local news coverage with News Director Don Hartley and West, Alabama's only live and local traffic coverage with Traffic Reporter Capt'n Ray. On October 12, 2023, WTBC changed its format from classic country (which moved to WTUG-HD2) to sports, branded as "Tide 100.9" and switched translators to W265CG 100.9 FM Tuscaloosa.

WRTR (105.9 FM, "Talk Radio 105.9") is a radio station broadcasting a news/talk radio format. Licensed to Brookwood, Alabama, United States, the station serves the Tuscaloosa area. The station is currently owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and the broadcast license is held by iHM Licenses, LLC. The station has studios located on 11th Street in Downtown Tuscaloosa, while it's transmitter is located on 40th Avenue. The station started life as WACT-FM, and changed its call letters to the current WRTR-FM on March 31, 1997. WRTR was known as "Tuscaloosa's Rock Station" and is the home of The Bob and Tom Show in West Alabama. Popular radio host Joe Elvis has hosted Afternoon Drive since 2002 and The Wild Bill Show airs every weeknight. On May 4, 2009, WRTR changed their format to news/talk, simulcasting WACT (1420 AM), branded as "Talk Radio 105.9". Overnight, the station broadcasts the syndicated Coast to Coast AM hosted by George Noory.

University Mall is the largest mall in western Alabama. It is located at the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and Veterans' Memorial Parkway in Tuscaloosa, the busiest in the city. The anchor stores are JCPenney and 2 Belk stores. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Sears. Owned and managed by the Montgomery-based Aronov Realty, the mall opened on August 20, 1980. Anchor stores of the 733,254 sq ft (68,121.5 m2) enclosed mall include JCPenney (99,450 sq ft (9,239 m2)), the vacant Sears (105,000 sq ft (9,800 m2)), Belk Women (82,222 sq ft (7,638.7 m2)), and Belk Men, Home & Kids (90,174 sq ft (8,377.4 m2)). The only outlier property on mall premises is a branch of Regions Bank. The property where University Mall now stands was previously home to the ruins of World War II-era Northington Naval Hospital and associated support buildings. These ruins were finally destroyed during the filming of the climactic scene of the 1978 Burt Reynolds film Hooper. The ruins of the hospital had lain derelict for many years and included a few dozen buildings as well as two immensely tall brick smoke-stacks. A few of the old barracks buildings remained until 2000; they housed the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education offices until they were relocated to the old Tuscaloosa High School (later Tuscaloosa Middle School) building on Queen City Avenue. On April 27, 2011, the mall was narrowly missed by a powerful tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa and killed dozens of people, sustaining moderate damage. On November 2, 2017, it was announced that Sears would be closing as part of a plan to close 63 stores nationwide. The store closed in January 2018.

McFarland Mall was a regional 497,000-square-foot (46,200 m2) L-shaped shopping mall on Skyland Boulevard (U.S. Route 11) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Located near the interchange of Interstate 20/59 with McFarland Boulevard (U.S. Route 82), it was in the southern section of the city. Opening on February 19, 1969, the mall replaced Woods Square Shopping Center and Leland Shopping Center as the main commercial retail center in the Tuscaloosa area. Brandon Crawford and Associates of Birmingham was the architect for the mall. General contractor for the project was N.C. Morgan Construction Company of Tuscaloosa. McGiffert and Associates of Tuscaloosa provided the engineering services for the mall. At its opening in 1969, McFarland Mall had 2 anchor stores, Woolco and Gayfers and 30 stores. At its height, McFarland Mall had 4 anchors, 40 stores, a 12-screen movie theater and a food court. Despite the opening of the larger University Mall in 1980, the mall survived an additional 30 years. However, the mall saw a steady 10-year decline during the 2000s following the closing of two anchors. Redevelopment was slated for 2013.
