Burghfield

Reading services comprises a pair of adjacent motorway service areas on the M4 motorway to the south of the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire. The two areas are on opposite sides of the motorway, with Reading West services serving westbound traffic and Reading East services serving eastbound traffic. Reading services are operated by Moto. Co-located with each of the two service areas is a Travelodge budget hotel. The services are within the civil parish of Burghfield. There is no direct vehicular or pedestrian link between the two service areas, whilst each area has its own access to the local road network that is gated and restricted to authorised vehicles.

Lockram Brook is a small stream in southern England. It rises near the Berkshire village of Mortimer, and is a tributary of Burghfield Brook.

Goddard's Green is a hamlet and part of the civil parish of Wokefield in Berkshire, England. The settlement lies between the villages of Burghfield Common and Mortimer Common, and is located approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) south-east of Reading. The Garth and South Berks Hunt had kennels here until 2002.

Great Auclum National Speed Hill Climb was a motorcar course close to Burghfield Common in the English county of Berkshire. It was based in the grounds of a large country house, formerly owned by a family connected to Huntley and Palmer – the famous biscuit manufacturers at nearby Reading, Berkshire. The hill climb was organised by the Hants and Berks Motor Club as a National Speed Hill Climb. This was part of the RAC British Hill Climb Championship, and at 440 yards (400 m) long it was the shortest of events in the Championship. The course travelled nearly as far downhill as it did up, with a finish almost level with the start. Motor Sport reported : "The ¼-mile course embraces two sharp corners, one banked, and a twisty section, so that a premium is set on initial acceleration and low-speed cornering."

Wokefield is a hamlet and civil parish in the West Berkshire district of Berkshire, England, south of Reading. The parish includes the hamlets of Goddard's Green and Bloomfield Hatch. It also includes part of the former parish of Sulhamstead and Grazeley.

Burghfield Lock is a lock on the River Kennet at Burghfield in the English county of Berkshire. Burghfield Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, and this stretch of the river is now administered by the Canal & River Trust and known as the Kennet Navigation. It has a rise/fall of 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m).The lock was restored in 1968 by a collaboration involving staff from British Waterways and volunteer labour.

Burghfield Bridge is a hamlet in the civil parish of Burghfield, which stands to the south of it in the English county of Berkshire. The settlement is situated between the village of Burghfield and the Reading suburb of Southcote.

Garston Lock (grid reference SU655707) is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal. It is near the M4 motorway and near Reading, England. Garston Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, and this stretch of the river is now administered by Canal & River Trust and known as the Kennet Navigation. It has a rise/fall of 7 ft 7ins (2.29m).One of only two remaining working examples of turf sided locks on the canal (the other being Monkey Marsh Lock), Garston Lock has been described as needing "more water to operate than the now more common brick or stone-sided variety" as the sloping sides increase the volume of the lock.The two sets of lock gates work differently: the upper set operates via a mechanical system, while the lower gates are hydraulic. The top part of the lock chamber has sloping banks which are covered by vegetation of various types rather than by turf. An arrangement of steel rails ensures that boats stay in the centre of the lock during the rise/fall of 7 ft 7 in (2.31 m). The lock is a grade II* listed building.Two pillboxes dating from World War II at the northwest and southeast corners of the lock, which were built as anti tank defences, are also listed buildings.

Calcot Mill is an historic former watermill on the Holy Brook, a channel of the River Kennet in the English county of Berkshire. The mill is situated in the civil parish of Holybrook and to the south of Calcot, a suburb of Reading. The original mill belonged to Reading Abbey, whose monks are believed to have created the Holy Brook as a water supply to this and other mills owned by them.Between 1876 and 1928 the GWR operated a siding serving the mill which was shunted by a horse.In 1966, the mill, then owned by Calcot Flour Mills, was badly damaged by fire. Since then the building has been converted to apartments.

Hosehill Lake is a 23.6-hectare (58-acre) Local Nature Reserve west of Reading in Berkshire. It is owned by West Berkshire Council and managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust.
