Saint Raphael's Cathedral is the Cathedral and a parish for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Madison and was located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin at 222 West Main Street. In March 2005, the Cathedral building located at 204 West Main Street was heavily damaged in a fire and was demolished. The parish community remains active, and hopes to rebuild the cathedral. As of October 2015, no plans had been announced for the rebuilding. In late 2012, the diocese constructed a park on the site, called Cathedral Square or Cathedral Place featuring a Way of the Cross.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is an agency of the Wisconsin state government responsible for overseeing state education and public libraries in Wisconsin. In addition to oversight of public primary and secondary education, the Department administers a number of other educational, vocational, and special needs programs. It also provides professional services and licensing for teachers, administrators, library professionals, and student services personnel. The Department also distributes state and federal education aid to local districts and programs. The Department is led by Superintendent Jill Underly, since being elected in 2021. The office of superintendent is a constitutional officer of the government of Wisconsin, established in Article X of the Constitution of Wisconsin. The superintendent is elected in state-wide nonpartisan elections every four years in the Spring following the U.S. presidential election. The Department's main office is located in the Tommy G. Thompson Building (TGT) in downtown Madison, Wisconsin; it maintains several other offices throughout the state for specialized services.

The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF) is an agency of the Wisconsin state government responsible for providing services to assist children and families and to oversee county offices handling those services. This includes child protective services, adoption and foster care services, and juvenile justice services. It also manages the licensing and regulation of facilities involved in the foster care and day care systems, performs background investigations of child care providers, and investigates incidents of potential child abuse or neglect. It administers the Wisconsin Works (W-2) program, the child care subsidy program, child support enforcement and paternity establishment services, and programs related to the federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) income support program.The Department is currently led by Secretary Emilie Amundson, an appointee of Governor Tony Evers. The DCF secretary is a cabinet member appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin and confirmed by the Wisconsin State Senate.The Department's main office is located in the Tommy G. Thompson Building (TGT) in downtown Madison, Wisconsin; it maintains regional offices throughout the state.

Madison Public Library (MPL), originally called the Madison Free Library, is the public library system in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, consisting of a central library and 8 neighborhood libraries. Madison Public Library is part of the South Central Library System, the second-largest public library system in Wisconsin after Milwaukee Public Library.

The United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (in case citations, W.D. Wis.) is a federal court in the Seventh Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit). The district was established on June 30, 1870.As of March 1, 2021 the Acting United States Attorney is Timothy M. O’Shea.

The Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU) is the official organization of Wisconsin's private, nonprofit (or independent) institutions of higher learning and their more than 56,000 students. It is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, was founded in 1961 and is recognized under state law. Each WAICU member is a nonprofit, fully accredited, four-year baccalaureate and/or graduate institution. The presidents of these institutions lead WAICU as its board of directors.

The Norwegian-American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library (NACGNL) is a not-for-profit Norwegian genealogy research center and library located at 415 West Main Street, Madison, Wisconsin. It is available to amateur and professional researchers through membership and fees for services. The library includes collections of Norwegian parish records, census records, government records, bygdebøker (a Norwegian language local history book), and family histories. The library holds American records, such as obituary records, immigration, and government records, and church records from the American Lutheran Church. An online access to some records is available to members.

Hotel Loraine, also known as The Loraine, is a ten-story high-rise building located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Designed in the Beaux-arts style by architect Herbert W. Tullgren, the hotel was built for Milwaukee hotel and insurance magnate Walter Schroeder, and was Madison's leading hotel for many years. After the hotel went out of business in 1968 the building housed the state Departments of Justice and Commerce. Those departments relocated to a newly constructed building in 2001. The building was then converted into condominiums which opened in 2004.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Overture Center for the Arts is a performing arts center and art gallery in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. The center opened on September 19, 2004, replacing the former Civic Center. In addition to several theaters, the center also houses the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Wisconsin Historical Museum is a museum located on the Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. The museum, which features information about the history of Wisconsin, is operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. In addition to Wisconsin history, it provides information about other American history topics through artifacts, photographs, full-scale dioramas, audio-visual presentations, and interactive multimedia programs. In late 2004, the museum's existence was threatened due to budget cuts, but citing its role in the state's history, Wisconsin governor Jim Doyle restored its funding.In addition to exhibits about traditional aspect of the state's history, the museum has also offered an exhibition on malted milk, which was first made in Wisconsin, and includes in its permanent collection a Big Boy, the mascot of a hamburger chain, rescued in 1985 when its restaurant closed. The museum also opened in 2012 an exhibit about Butch Vig's (of Madison's Garbage (band)) Smart Studios, a Madison recording facility that closed in 2010.

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), formerly known as the Madison Art Center, is an independent, non-profit art museum located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. MMoCA is dedicated to exhibiting, collecting, and preserving modern and contemporary art. Its mission is to educate and inspire by means of rotating permanent collection exhibitions, special exhibitions, film series, and educational programming. The museum opened in its current home adjacent to the Overture Center for the Arts on April 23, 2006. Both MMoCA and the Overture Center were designed by world-renowned architect César Pelli.

The Dowling Apartment Building was built as a luxury apartment block a half mile south of the capitol in Madison, Wisconsin in 1922. In 2002 it was added to the State and National Register of Historic Places.
