Castle Rock (Michigan)

Rabbit's Back, also called Rabbit Back, is an elevated promontory, or peninsula, that extends eastward into Lake Huron. It is located 4 miles (6.4 km) north of St. Ignace in the U.S. state of Michigan. The promontory separates two shallow bays of the extreme northwestern coast of Lake Huron, Evergreen Shores to the south and Horseshoe Bay to the north. From nearby Mackinac Island the promontory is said to appear like the back of a crouching rabbit, hence the name Rabbit's Back. Like nearby Castle Rock, the promontory is a somewhat erosion-resistant mass of brecciated Straits of Mackinac limestone. The summit of the promontory is 696 feet (212 meters) above sea level, and 115 feet (35 meters) above the level of nearby Lake Huron. The promontory is located within Hiawatha National Forest.

Horseshoe Bay Trail is a 6.4-mile (10.3 km) trail that enters and loops through the Horseshoe Bay Wilderness. The motor-vehicle trailhead, located just outside the wilderness, is 6 miles (9.7 km) north of St. Ignace, MI.

Chain Lake is a large pond or small lake in Mackinac County near St. Ignace in the U.S. state of Michigan at an elevation of 600 feet (180 m). The lake is served by Interstate 75, which provides a rest area and lake overlook for southbound drivers at mile 346. The lake is also served by the North Country Trail, running in concurrence with the St. Ignace-Trout Lake Trail. This trail uses the right-of-way abandoned by a spur line of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway, a logging-era railroad that helped remove most of the old-growth timber from around the lake. Second-growth woodland surrounding the small sheet of water is owned by the private sector and by Hiawatha National Forest. The lake is noted for rock bass, bullhead, sunfish, sucker, largemouth bass, perch, and northern pike. In winter seasons with suitable weather conditions it can be used to play pond hockey. It may be named for being part of a "chain" of streams and lakes that offered alternative canoe passage from St. Ignace westward. Although the eastern tip of the lake is less than 1 mile from Lake Huron, it drains down the Moran River and through Freschette Lake into West Moran Bay in Lake Michigan.

The St. Ignace–Trout Lake Trail is a 26-mile (42 km) ORV, bicycle and hiking trail in Michigan that creates a non-highway right-of-way between the Straits of Mackinac and the interior of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The trail uses a section of the former roadbed of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. Proceeding from south to north, the trail departs St. Ignace, at a point adjacent to the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge, and runs concurrently for the first five miles (8.0 km) of its route with the North Country Trail. The two trails then diverge and, continuing to follow the former railroad bed, the St. Ignace–Trout Lake Trail crosses Mackinac County from south to north and enters Chippewa County. At the trail's northern end, the unincorporated community of Trout Lake in Chippewa County, the trail's right-of-way resumes its active use as a railroad and the trail ends. The St. Ignace Mission (French: Mission Saint-Ignace) is located in a municipal park known as Marquette Mission Park. It was the site of a mission established by Jesuit priest, Father Jacques Marquette, and the site of his grave in 1677. A second mission was established at a different site in 1837, and the chapel was moved here in 1954. The second mission chapel is the oldest Catholic church in Michigan and Wisconsin. The St. Ignace Mission was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1956, and was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmarks in 1960, one of the earliest sites recognized. The mission chapel serves as the Museum of Ojibwa Culture.

East Moran Bay is a small, historic harbor in the Straits of Mackinac adjacent to the city of St. Ignace in the U.S. state of Michigan. The harbor is used as a commercial port for Star Line Ferry and Shepler's Ferry ferry boats from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island, a tourist center of the Straits of Mackinac. The bay and its harbor are guarded by the Wawatam Lighthouse.The bay is a traditional place for fishing, and several St. Ignace archaeological sites associated with Native American history are located adjacent to the bay. In historical times, the bay was used as a harbor by the Mackinac Transportation Company, operator of train ferries; the Vacationland and her sister vessels, which crossed the Straits carrying motor vehicles; and the Arnold Transit Company ferry boat line to Mackinac Island. State historical markers describe the history of the harbor. A bottomland survey of East Moran Bay was performed by the Michigan Underwater Preserve Council and its volunteer sport divers in the early 1900s and published by the United States Government Printing Office in 1992. The city of St. Ignace has built and maintains an East Moran Bay waterfront path, the Huron Boardwalk, marked with signs and artifacts, to interpret and celebrate the bay and its heritage. The artifacts include the remains of a Mackinaw boat built about 1899.

The Marquette Street Archaeological District is an archaeological site in St. Ignace, Michigan near the St. Ignace Mission. It covers 6 acres (2.4 ha) and includes one building, a village site, and a cemetery; archaeological designations are 20MK82 and 20MK99. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Lasanen Site, designated 20MA21, is an archaeological site located in St. Ignace, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

St. Anthony's Rock is a geological limestone sea stack and tourist attraction located in the central part of the city of St. Ignace, Michigan in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The John Chambers House is an originally residential building located at 90 North State Street in St. Ignace, Michigan. The house is currently operated as the Colonial House Inn. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Fort de Buade was a French fort in the present U.S. state of Michigan's Upper Peninsula across the Straits of Mackinac from the northern tip of lower Michigan's "mitten". It was garrisoned between 1683 and 1701. The city of St. Ignace developed at the site, which also had the historic St. Ignace Mission founded by Jesuits. The fort was named after New France's governor at the time, Louis de Buade de Frontenac.

St. Ignace ( IHG-nəss) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Mackinac County. The city had a population of 2,306 at the 2020 census. St. Ignace Township is located just to the north of the city, but the two are administered autonomously. St. Ignace is located along Lake Huron in the Upper Peninsula on the northern side of the Straits of Mackinac. The city serves as a gateway to the state's Upper Peninsula for travelers coming from the Lower Peninsula, as the city is at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, opposite Mackinaw City. It has one of two ports which provide ferry service to nearby Mackinac Island. St. Ignace's history dates back to 1671 when French Jesuit priests founded the St. Ignace Mission, which makes it one of the oldest European settlements in the state after Sault Ste. Marie. The area was previously inhabited by the Wyandot people, as well as the Ojibwe and Ottawa tribes of Native Americans. St. Ignace soon became the center of fur trading with the French. It was incorporated as a village in 1882 and a city in 1883. The Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians is headquartered at St. Ignace, and the city continues to have a high population of Native Americans.
