Franconian Lake District

Pfofeld is a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Franconia, Germany.

The Brombachmoor is a nature reserve in the Franconian Lake District in the Middle Franconian county of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in the German state of Bavaria. The fen lies west of the Kleiner Brombachsee lake between the villages of Langlau and Absberg, near the Hühnermühle and Neuherberg in the parish of Thannhausen. Since 3 November 1983 it has been a designated Naturschutzgebiet with an area of 3.56 hectares, and thus the smallest nature reserve in the county. Since the flooding of the little Brombachsee in 1985 the area has become the last surviving remains of the natural Brombach valley.Through the bog flows the Brombach, the stream that gives it its name, and which empties into the Altmühlüberleiter ("Old Mill Diversion Channel") around 250 metres to the southeast. The roughly 700-metre-long trough-shaped valley is covered in alder carr woods and riparian woodland as well as small pools known as Tümpeln. Between the sedge hummocks there are bulrushes, peat mosses, dogbanes, sedges und rushes.

Neighbouring districts are (from the north clockwise) Ansbach, Roth, Eichstätt and Donau-Ries. It is located in the south of Middle Franconia, 50 kilometres south of Nuremberg. Largest city and the administrative center is Weißenburg in Bayern.

Theilenhofen is a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Bavaria, Germany. An important part of the local history is the Roman camp Iciniacum, near the Limes Germanicus. This fortification and Roman village was erected around 100 AD and destroyed c. 260 AD by the Germanic Alemanni. Today you can see only the Roman Military Bath in this area. It was first found in 1820.

Gunzenhausen station is apart from Cronheim station on the Nördlingen–Gunzenhausen railway, now operated as a heritage railway, the only station in the Bavarian town of Gunzenhausen and a hub of Middle Franconia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 4 station. and has five platform tracks. The station is served by about 60 trains daily operated by Deutsche Bahn, and is served by the Treuchtlingen–Würzburg railway. The Gunzenhausen–Pleinfeld railway (also known as the Seenlandbahn or "Lakeland railway") and the Nördlingen–Gunzenhausen line, which is served by steam-hauled services on some days, also begin in Gunzenhausen.

Gunzenhausen (German pronunciation: [ɡʊnt͡sn̩ˈhaʊ̯zn̩] (listen); Bavarian: Gunzenhausn) is a town in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the river Altmühl, 19 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Weißenburg in Bayern, and 45 kilometres (28 mi) southwest of Nuremberg. Gunzenhausen is a nationally recognized recreation area. It is noted as being at one end of part of The Limes Germanicus, a Roman border wall, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Absberg is a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Bavaria, Germany. The Absberg family was named by this place and had their home castle there.

Haundorf is a municipality in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district, in Bavaria, Germany. On the southeastern edge of the municipality is the Brombachmoor nature reserve.
