Mount Airy Historic District (Mount Airy, Maryland)

Mount Airy is a town in Carroll and Frederick counties in the U.S. state of Maryland. It is part of both the Washington Metropolitan Area and Baltimore Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 census the population was 9,288.Outside the town limits, the surrounding countryside is colloquially referred to as Mount Airy or the "Four-County Area" by locals. The "Four-County Area" derives its name from the fact that the "Mount Airy" mailing area encompasses portions of Frederick, Carroll, Montgomery, and Howard counties.

Parr's Ridge is a ridge which forms the summit of the Piedmont Plateau region in the U.S. state of Maryland. The ridge, a gentle summit in contrast to Maryland's Appalachian ridges to the west, extends from southwest to northeast through Montgomery, Howard and Carroll counties. The highest point in Maryland east of the Appalachian Mountains, Dug Hill in northern Carroll County, at an elevation of just over 1100 feet (335 m), is a mile or two to the west of the ridge. The Patuxent and Patapsco rivers both have headwaters on the ridge. The South branch of the Patapsco's headwaters point is dubbed Parr's Spring, and is the meeting point of four of Maryland's counties: Howard, Carroll, Montgomery, and Frederick. The Spring is submerged beneath a pond on the grounds of the eponymous "Four-County Farm." The area was surveyed by John Parr in 1744, patenting the land as "Parr's Range". David McMurtrie Gregg marched his troops through the area during the civil war on the way to Gettysburg.Maryland State Route 27 follows the course of Parr's Ridge. Communities along Parr's Ridge include, from south to north, Damascus, Mount Airy (where Interstate 70 crosses the ridge), Westminster, Cranberry, Manchester, and Lineboro.

Simpson-Poplar Springs African Methodist Episcopal Church, is a historic African Methodist Episcopal Church located at 16901 Hardy Road in Poplar Springs, near Mount Airy, Maryland. The building was constructed in 1893.

Poplar Springs is a town located in western Howard County in the state of Maryland, United States. The town is named for the "Poplar Spring Branch", where Levin Lawrance settled in 1741 and Captain Philimon Dorsey settled in 1750 on a land patent named "Dorseys Grove".Old Frederick Road was built through the town, following a Native American foot trail. By 1783, two weekly stagecoaches traveled the road. As of 1835, eight daily coaches traveled through town. In the summer of 1843 and 1844, Samuel Morse used Poplar Springs as a vacation spot while experimenting with the single wire telegraph. After the Civil War, members of the 1st Maryland Infantry, CSA would hold regular reunions at the hotel in town. By 1888, the town population was 48.

Hubert Black House is a historic house and farm located in Woodbine (Formerly Florence), Howard County, Maryland. It was named after J. Hubert Black, a Howard County parole officer, and later, a County Commissioner who ran on a no growth platform in 1962, who approved the Rouse Company development of Columbia, Maryland.The Black House sits on a 250-acre former dairy farmed by the Black family since 1883. The land is part of a group of original land patents named Hobson's Choice, Wise Man's Folly, Additional Defense, Range Declined, Acorn Hill, Ridgley's Great Park, The Dispute, and Dispute Ended. Former owners included Samuel and Amelia Jarden in 1872, Josuha D. Warfield in 1869, and Phillip Welsh in 1808. The house is a three-bay-wide 2+1⁄2-story building constructed in 1860 during the last years of slavery in the Howard District of Anne Arundel County.

Florence is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A post office operated in Florence between June 17, 1868, and March 31, 1906. Governor Edwin Warfield taught in the neighborhood one room schoolhouse. The town was named by Gassaway Watkins Warfield before his death in Camp Chase while serving in the Confederate Army. The town was located at the crossroads of Florence and Jennings Chapel roads. Jennings Chapel was named for Dr. Samuel Kennedy Jennings after the congregation relocated from the Crapster schoolhouse.By 1870, the population increased to 16 and 25 by 1880.Picketts general store for the town was destroyed by fire in 1909.

Roxbury Mill is a historic flour and grist mill located in Glenwood, Howard County, Maryland, now part of the Howard County Farm Museum. The Roxbury Mill is located next to the Catt Tale (Cat Tail) river and with construction starting in 1753 by Capt. Philemon Dorsey Richard and John Dorsey settled plantations near the site in 1776. The 1+1⁄2-story stone mill with cellar was completed after 1791. It used an Oliver Evans licensed automated milling process that cost $20 at the time. Samuel Thomas paid $800 damages to Evans in April 1818 for using the technology without a license. In 1850, the mill owned by Allen Bowie Davis was in full production with two employees and one packer producing 125,000 lb of meal and 25,000 lb chop flour on three wheels. The Dorsey family sent slaves from Roxbury Mills in their place during the Civil War Draft. In 1874 it was sold to George Peddicord. A waterwheel and gears made of steel replaced the wood construction in 1917. Ray Higgins and later owner Ray Smallwood Sr. ( -1958) operated bootleg distilleries at the mill and Miller's house from the 1920s to 1950s that were raided at least once. The mill remained in operation until 1962. The mill was stabilized with a metal roof, but fell into a period of purposeful neglect with mill race and roof damage following the 1972 Hurricane Agnes hurricane. The widow Irene Smallwood felt that donating the property to the Maryland Historical Society would not raise enough money and resold the property before her death in 1992. The Grover family pursued county funds to restore the building, but were ordered by the county in 1993 to stabilize the structure or tear it down. In 2002, the mill was dismantled "due to safety issues and concerns about vandalism". The property was subdivided to 1 acre. The foundation was left onsite, with components shipped to the Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club for reassembly which has not been started.A store was built next to the mill in 1825 operated by J.D. Matthews. The Roxbury Mills Miller's House sits diagonally across from the original mill site on a 7-acre site that was once part of the "Vanity Mount", "Duvall's Range" and "Hard to get and Dear Paid for" land patents. The log core of the house was built prior 1820 with shingle siding and an L-shaped addition and a wood-framed barn-carriage house outbuilding. In 1929, the property was purchased by Raymond and Irene Small as the "Roxbury Farm" and was later reduced to 5 acres.The Wilson house dates to the same period as the Miller's House, once owned by Allen Bowie Davis. The house is built around a log cabin core that once was a slave quarters.

Sunnyside or Sunnyside Farms is a historic slave plantation home located in Woodbine, Howard County, Maryland. Sunnyside began as a log cabin built in 1800 by Capt. Banjamin Warfield of Cherry Grove's son Joshua Warfield. In 1830, Albert Gallatin Warfield expanded the home, and a second expansion was completed in 1890 by his son Joshua Warfield.Albert Warfield was known for generously freeing his slaves at the age of 40, albeit at a time when life expectancy was shorter. His son Joshua Warfield operated a title company, and imported food waste for composting fertilizer for soil. The house later passed to Norman Hutton Warfield (1889 - 1955) who worked for the Federal Land Trust. The last Warfield heir to own the estate was the assistant states attorney for Howard County, Albert Gassaway Warfield III (-1983) who worked for Pierce, Fenner and Smith Inc. The farm is now known as Timberleigh Farm

Lisbon is a census-designated place located in western Howard County in the state of Maryland, United States, located roughly between Baltimore and Frederick and north of Washington, D.C. It is contained in an area of roughly one square mile. Lisbon is located along Interstate 70 and Maryland Route 144 and is home to the first roundabout in Maryland (opened in 1993). It first appeared as a CDP in the 2020 Census with a population of 282.

Green Valley is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in southern Frederick County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,643 at the 2020 census. The area was listed as a census-designated place in 2000 but not listed as part of any CDP at the 2010 census. It was re-designated a census-designated place for the 2020 census.

Woodbine is an unincorporated rural community in Howard and Carroll counties, Maryland, United States. It is part of the Baltimorean metropolitan area. It is located southeast of Frederick, west of Baltimore, north of Washington, D.C., and east of Mount Airy. The community was named for the woodbine plant, which grew in the community in fields and along riverbanks.
