Frickley railway station

Frickley is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England in the civil parish of Clayton with Frickley. It lies close to the border with West Yorkshire.

Clayton is a village in the west of the City of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, on the border with West Yorkshire. It lies to the north of Thurnscoe at an elevation of around 80 metres above sea level. Together with Frickley, it makes up the civil parish of Clayton with Frickley, which at the 2001 census had a population of 208, increasing to 230 at the 2011 Census.The Parish Church of All Saints dates back to the 12th century and is a Grade II* listed building.

Thurnscoe railway station serves a village of Thurnscoe in South Yorkshire, England. It is located on the Wakefield Line 15 miles (24 km) north of Sheffield railway station. Only stopping services call at the station. It was opened as a new station on 16 May 1988. The station was built by British Rail. Although the line passed through the three settlements of Thurnscoe, neighbouring Goldthorpe and Bolton-on-Dearne, the Swinton & Knottingley Joint railway originally provided only two stations for the area, at Bolton-on-Dearne and at Frickley. Until 1961 the station was called Bolton on Dearne for Goldthorpe and was served by Sheffield-York stopping services. By the late 1980s the low demand for York-bound passengers meant that only a handful of stopping trains used the line. South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, responding to increasing demand for Sheffield-Leeds passengers in the area, and a lack of capacity on the Sheffield-Barnsley-Leeds line, sponsored an hourly service via Bolton and opened new stations at Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe.

Hickleton and Thurnscoe Halt was a small railway station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway line between Wrangbrook Junction and Wath-upon-Dearne. The halt was built to serve the mining villages of Hickleton and Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire and was situated in the centre of Thurnscoe at the point where the line crosses over the main Barnsley road. Hickleton village was situated over 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away. The station was situated 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Moorhouse and South Elmsall and consisted of a single wooden platform with a single storey "Double Pavilion" style wooden station building. The platform surface was of gravel and the station opened on 28 August 1902 and closed, along with the others on the line, on 6 April 1929. The line was controlled by two standard H&B style signal boxes named "Hickleton Station" and "Hickleton Colliery". Immediately south of the station was the entrance to Hickleton Main Colliery where the H&B shared sidings with the Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway line.

Thurnscoe is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Dearne North ward of the Barnsley MBC. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, the village is approximately 9 miles (14 km) from Barnsley and 8 miles (13 km) from Doncaster. It is served by Thurnscoe railway station with bus links provided by Stagecoach.

Phoenix Park is a park in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, England, that is currently owned by The Land Trust and maintained in partnership with The Conservation Volunteers. It is built on the former site of Hickleton Main Colliery, which ran from 1892 until 1988 when it was closed. The park is 3.3 miles (5.3 km) long.

Hickleton Main Colliery was a coal mine in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, England from 1892 to 1988. In 1933 it employed 2,560 people underground and 500 on the surface. The coal mine's union lodge was the 400th recipient of the Order of Industrial Heroism.On 9 February 1944, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited the colliery and thanked the miners for their war effort during World War II.In 2006 a black granite memorial was erected in Thurnscoe cemetery bearing the names of the 161 miners who died at the pit over the years.The site of the colliery now forms Phoenix Park in Thurnscoe.

Moorthorpe is a village in the civil parish of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe in the City of Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, England. It is governed by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council.

Moorthorpe railway station serves the village of Moorthorpe and town of South Kirkby in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Wakefield Line and the Dearne Valley Line, 18+1⁄4 miles (29.4 km) north of Sheffield and is served by Northern. The station was opened in May 1879, jointly by the Midland Railway and North Eastern Railway, as part of their Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway scheme. A short chord was also built at the same time to link the S&K Joint line with the main Doncaster to Leeds line at South Kirkby Junction. Upon opening, Moorthorpe marked the northern limit of the part of the line maintained by the Midland Railway; the southern end of the intersection bridge over the Doncaster to Leeds line, marked the actual boundary. North of that point, the North Eastern Railway undertook the maintenance. Moorthorpe station is of North Eastern Railway design, as is Pontefract Baghill.This latter connection is now part of the main line between Sheffield and Leeds, and is used by CrossCountry services between Edinburgh Waverley and Birmingham New Street, and beyond. In addition, local trains on the Leeds – Rotherham Central – Sheffield route (Wakefield Line) use the spur and call at the station. This connecting line is now effectively the main line, and it splits from the S & K route immediately north of the station, with the track to York then bridging the GNR main line on its way northwards. This junction (and the adjacent loops to the south of the station) was controlled from the nearby Midland Railway signal box until May 2011, but following signalling equipment renewal work the area is now under the control of the ROC at York.After the station was reduced to the status of an unstaffed halt in the 1980s, the station building was converted into a pub. This closed in the early 1990s and the building became derelict. However it has recently been restored by the town council, with funding from the Railway Heritage Trust, to include office space and a cafe.A footbridge was opened at the station at the end of May 2010; previously passengers had to cross the tracks at a flat crossing.

South Kirkby and Moorthorpe is a civil parish in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England which is governed locally by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. The parish and town council are made up of the town of South Kirkby and the village of Moorthorpe. As of 2009 the parish had a population of 10,979, increasing to 11,105 at the 2011 Census.
