Gjirokastër Fortress

Çerçiz Topulli Square (Albanian: Sheshi „Çerçiz Topulli“) is a town square located in Gjirokastër, Albania. In fact, it is actually a widened street (Rruga Gjin Zenebisi, Gjin Zenebisi Street) located east of the entrance of Qafa e Pazarit (Bazaar Pass) The city's Old Bazaar begins at the upper corner (west) of the square. The square is named after Çerçiz Topulli, Albanian hero born in Gjirokastër. Within the square is a monument also dedicated to him. It was erected in 1934 by Odhise Paskali, an Albanian realist sculptor. On the monument is a bullet hole inflicted by an Italian soldier during the Occupation of Albania during World War II.

The Teqe Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Teqes) is a mosque in Gjirokastër, Albania. It is a Cultural Monument of Albania. It was described by famed explorer Evliya Çelebi in the 17th century, but its current form is the work of an Ahmet Çelebi in 1773. An inscription dates it to 1732 to 1733 (Hijri year 1145). Though named Teqe by its first descriptor, the locals call it Mesh Mosque. Still standing in 1967 and originally slated for demolition soon after, it was reprieved with cultural monument status in 1973.

The Bazaar Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Pazarit; Turkish: Pazar Camii), also known as Memi Bey Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Memi Beut; Turkish: Memi Bey Camii), is a mosque located in Gjirokastër, Albania.

Gjirokastër Obelisk or Mëmëdheu ABC is an obelisk monument in Gjirokastër, Albania, and celebrates the Albanian language. The obelisk is located in the highest peak of the city of Gjirokastër near the first Albanian school to be opened in the town in 1908 and is a symbol for education in Albania. The monument is 7 m high, and is built with hewn stone from the 124 block stones. The authors of the obelisk are Muntaz Dhrami, Ksenofon Kostaqi, and Stefan Papamihali, who were all awarded the prize "Honor of the City of Gjirokaster" in 2008 from the Municipality of Gjirokastër for their artistic work for the city.

Holy Transfiguration Church, also known as Church of Gjirokastër (Albanian: Kisha e Shpërfytyrimit) is an Orthodox church in Gjirokastër, Albania. The church was built in 1784. It is a Cultural Monument of Albania since 1963.

Gjirokastër Gymnasium (Albanian: Gjimnazi i Gjirokastrës), also known as Asim Zeneli Gymnasium (Albanian: Gjimnazi „Asim Zeneli“) is a gymnasium located in Gjirokastër, Albania. The school was founded on 5 November 1923 as one of the first schools of general secondary education in Albania, where students could study regardless of religion, gender and locality.

Gjirokastër Ethnographic Museum (Albanian: Muzeu Etnografik i Gjirokastrës) is a museum in western Gjirokastër, Albania. The museum, constructed in 1966, is built on the site of communist leader Enver Hoxha's birth home and offers an insight into the traditional lifestyle of the town. From 1966 to 1991, the building served as the Anti-Fascist Museum, but after the fall of socialism in Albania it was converted to house cultural artefacts and traditional homewares. The museum is open year-round to visitors.

Gjirokastra Stadium (Albanian: Stadiumi Gjirokastra) is a multi-use stadium in Gjirokastër, Albania. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of KS Luftëtari Gjirokastër. The stadium has a capacity of 8,400 people. This is the first time after 1972 that the stadium is renovated in so big level.

St. Michael's Monastery Church (Albanian: Kisha e Manastirit të Shën Mëhillit) is a monastery church in Nivan, Gjirokastër County, Albania. It is a Cultural Monument of Albania.

Zekate House (Albanian: Zapanaja e Zekatëve), is a house in Gjirokastër, Albania. The house was built in 1811–1812 by Beqir Zeko, a local Albanian general administrator in Ali Pasha's government. It is described as "one of the grandest examples of Gjirokastër architecture in the Ottoman style", and as the authentic southern Albanian Tosk type residential housing of the early 19th century wealthy Albanians. Fortified tower houses, (known as kullë in Albanian), belonged to wealthy people, such as government officials or merchants. All rooms have a basic design: a safe ground floor with a wooden gallery on top, which are the most important rooms for an extended family. The decks are placed on the walls to help defend against the enemies they attack. Zekate's house is an example of an urban kullë. Built in 1811–1812, it has two towers and a large double arch facade. The panorama of the city can be viewed from the house.

Eqrem Çabej University is a university in the Albanian town of Gjirokastër, named after Eqrem Çabej. It is one of nine SIFE accredited universities in Albania. It was created as a University with the name of “Eqrem Çabej” with decision of the Albanian Government nr. 414, dated 12 November 1991, on the basis of the Higher Institute of Pedagogy that was already established in 1971. It is the most important teaching and scientific institute of Southern Albania. University level courses in Gjirokastra had already started in 1968 when a branch of the business school of the University of Tirana had started to operate. One year later, in 1969 started the Agronomy School as a branch of the Agricultural University of Tirana, which lasted 10 years. Also, in 1969 started the Pedagogical Institute and the branch of the Academy of Physical and Sports Education Vojo Kushi which operated for 5 years. On the basis of this experience in 1971 started its operations the Higher Pedagogical Institute. In 1980 the Biology-Chemistry School, branch of the University of Tirana was opened. In 1986 started to operate the Albanian Language School of Higher Pedagogy.

Gjirokastër (Albanian: [ɟiɾoˈkast:əɾ, -ra], Albanian definite form: Gjirokastra) is a city in southern Albania and the seat of Gjirokastër County and Gjirokastër Municipality. It is located in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is overlooked by Gjirokastër Fortress, where the Gjirokastër National Folk Festival is held every five years. It is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha, and author Ismail Kadare. The city appears in the historical record dating back in 1336 by its medieval Greek name, Αργυρόκαστρο, Argyrókastro, as part of the Byzantine Empire. It first developed in the hill where the Gjirokastër Fortress is located. In this period, Gjirokastër was contested between the Despotate of Epirus and the Albanian clan of Zenebishi under Gjon Zenebishi who made it his capital in 1417. It was taken by the Ottomans in 1418, a year after's Gjon's death and it became the seat of the Sanjak of Albania. Throughout the Ottoman era, Gjirokastër was officially known in Ottoman Turkish as Ergiri and also Ergiri Kasrı. During the Ottoman period conversions to Islam and an influx of Muslim converts from the surrounding countryside made Gjirokastër go from being an overwhelmingly Christian city in the 16th century into one with a large Muslim population by the early 19th century. Gjirokastër also became a major religious centre for Bektashi Sufism. Taken by the Hellenic Army during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, Gjirokastër was eventually incorporated into the newly independent state of Albania in 1913. The local Greek population rebelled and established the short-lived Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus in 1914 with Gjirokastër as its capital. During the communist period, Gjirokastër was designated a "museum city" due to its architectural heritage. In more recent years, the city witnessed anti-government protests that led to the 1997 Albanian civil unrest. Along with Muslim and Orthodox Albanians, the city is also home to a substantial Greek minority, and some Aromanians, Romani and Balkan Egyptians. The city is a centre for the Greek minority in Albania.
