Birchills Power Station

Birchills is a residential area of Walsall in the West Midlands of England. The appropriate Walsall ward is Birchills Leamore. The population of this ward taken at the 2011 census was 14,775.It is situated several hundred yards west of the town centre and is an established area containing many different housing types, though Victorian/Edwardian terraced houses and inter-war council houses are the most frequent type. Reedswood Park is located in Birchills, as is Pouk Hill - a hill which inspired a 1970s Slade song. Birchills has an above average proportion of ethnic minorities living in it, mostly Pakistani Muslims. Birchills formerly was served by Birchills railway station which was on the Chase Line but closed in the 1930s. Several tower blocks, built during the 1960s, are situated in the east of Birchills, near Walsall town centre. Murderer Raymond Leslie Morris was living in one of these flats with his wife at the time of his arrest on 4 November 1967. A power station was opened in the north of Birchills in 1949, just a few years before the Beechdale council estate was developed at the far side. This power station served the Walsall area for 33 years until its closure in October 1982, although it was not demolished until March 1987. The site of the power station was redeveloped for housing and commerce during the 1990s.

Birchills Junction (grid reference SK002000) is the canal junction at the northern limit of what is now called the Walsall Canal where it meets the Wyrley and Essington Canal main line, near Walsall, West Midlands, England. It opened in 1798, but lasted for little more than a year, until it was re-opened in 1841 when a connecting link was built to the Birmingham Canal Navigations' southern route to Walsall.

Reedswood Park is a public park situated in Walsall, West Midlands, England. It is surrounded by the residential areas of Birchills and Beechdale, and is about half a mile west of Walsall town centre. The park featured an outdoor public swimming pool a number of years ago; it was popular and in constant use in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. This has now been demolished. The park has a skating ramp as well as a children's play area and a basketball court.

North Walsall railway station was a station built by the Wolverhampton and Walsall Railway in 1872, and was operated by the Midland Railway from 1876 onwards. It served the north Walsall areas of Birchills and Leamore. It was located west of Bloxwich Road in a cutting.The station closed in 1925, although the railway serving it remained open for a further 57 years, serving Birchills Power Station until its closure in October 1982, when the line closed.

Beechdale, originally named Gypsy Lane Estate, is a housing estate in Walsall, England, that was developed predominantly during the 1950s and 1960s.

Walsall Castle, also known as Walsall Moat, or le Mote during the 1400s, was a 12th or 13th-15th century moated manor house in the market town of Walsall in the West Midlands. The current site of the castle is occupied by a parking lot for the nearby Walsall Manor Hospital and the moat ran along what is now southern Moat Street - despite this, no visible remains exist and all earthworks have been flattened.

Walsall Hospital Radio, established 18 March 1978, was an internally broadcasting hospital radio station based at the Manor Hospital in Walsall, West Midlands. It was a registered charity, staffed by approximately 25 unpaid volunteers who supported the station by either presenting shows, helping with station administration, fundraising or all three. Following a period of inactivity, it officially closed in 2018.

The Walsall Canal is a narrow (7 feet or 2.1 metres) canal, seven miles (11 km) long, forming part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, and passing around the western side of Walsall, West Midlands, England.

St Peter's Church is a grade-II listed anglican church in Stafford Street in Walsall, West Midlands, England. The church is an active place of worship and serves the surrounding suburbs of Birchills, Leamore, Coalpool, Harden, Ryecroft and Beechdale. The church was listed as a grade II building in 1986 and since then, has continued to serve the local community.

Alumwell is a suburb on the west side of Walsall, in the West Midlands of England. The area is home to Walsall Manor Hospital. The neighbourhood is adjacent to the M6 and can be seen from the motorway by passing drivers. The neighbourhood is by a primary and secondary school. Most of the houses on the estate were built by the local authority during the 1950s. In 2013, a national suburb census was taken in order to show faults and concerns In Alumwell so that areas could be developed. The census shown that 57% of residents were British, 41% were Asian and 2% other. The census shown areas of development such as crime, unemployment rate and street cleanliness. Crime was rated as 'Likely' in all three zones of Alumwell with Zone 2 resulting in the highest crime rate of the area. A ratio of 6:4 was shown that 60% of residents do not work and claim state benefits. This could also be to the high number of retired and young people on the area. And Street Cleanliness was rated as 'Poor' with comments such as concerns with graffiti, loitering and broken bus stop windows. Primley Avenue Park also went under inspection for drug use in 2013 which shown that drug use was clear to familiar to be taken place. This was reported. In 2014, Alumwell underwent inspection again and was rated 3rd most deprived area in Walsall and 350 nationally. Alumwell has a high quality of community workers such as neighbourhood watch which is shown effective in all three areas of Alumwell. The area is due to undergo a scheme in which roads will be redone, clearing of rubbish and the cleaning of graffiti. Alumwell is home to four schools which run operational sporting activities for residents out of school time. Alumwell used to have three youth clubs located on Wolverhampton Road, Old Pleck Road and a Mobile youth club. All three were scrapped due to a lack of usage. In 2011 it was estimated that the average number of children per household was 3. Which improved from 2006 where the average number of children per household was 5.

Leamore is a suburb of Walsall in the extreme north of the town on the border with Bloxwich. It is a mix of private and council housing built since the late 19th century. The most significant homes in the area are several multi-storey blocks of council flats, which were built in the 1960s. A council housing development took place around the centre of Leamore in the 1920s, and also included the opening of Somerfield Road, which gave Green Lane a direct link to Bloxwich town centre, and now forms part of the A34. A 280-flat multi-storey estate was developed in the early 1960s to replace an area previously occupied by slums; it was completed in 1964.The largest single housing development in Leamore is the Beechdale housing estate which was built by Walsall Council in the 1950s to rehouse people from the town centre slum clearances. Noddy Holder, the lead singer of Slade, grew up in Beechdale. Ball House and Leadbetter House tower blocks, situated in the north of Leamore and built during the 1960s, were demolished in late 2007 after some 40 years of dominating the local skyline. Bloxwich Road is one of two routes running parallel through Leamore between Walsall and Bloxwich, with the other being Green Lane.
