Bisley, Gloucestershire

Lypiatt is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Miserden, in the Stroud district, in Gloucestershire, England, approximately 4 miles (6 km) east of Stroud. The parish was formed from Stroud in 1894, later in 1894 the parish was abolished to form "Bisley with Lypiatt".The parish is noted for two historic houses: Lypiatt Park, of medieval origins, home of the late Modernist sculptor Lynn Chadwick and his family a neo-Classical manor house, Nether Lypiatt Manor, formerly the home of Violet Gordon-Woodhouse and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, who sold in 2006 to Paul Drayson.

It includes Bisley, Lypiatt, Eastcombe and Oakridge.Parishes adjoining Bisley-with-Lypiatt are: Miserden to the north; Edgeworth to the north-east; Duntisbourne Rouse to the east; Sapperton to the south-east; Chalford to the south; Thrupp to the south-west; Stroud to the west; and Painswick to the north-west. Of these, Edgeworth, Duntisbourne Rouse and Sapperton are in the Cotswold district, the remainder in Stroud.

Rough Bank, Miserden (grid reference SO907087) is a 9.2-hectare (23-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1986. It was purchased by the wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation in 2012.

Eastcombe is a village in Stroud District in Gloucestershire, England. The Parish Church is called Eastcombe: St Augustine and served the parish of Bussage with Eastcombe and the benefice of Bisley, Chalford, France Lynch and Oakridge and Bussage with Eastcombe and belongs to the diocese of Gloucester. It was announced in November 2021 that the church would be closed and the building sold. Lypiatt Park is a medieval and Tudor manor house with notable nineteenth-century additions in the parish of Bisley, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire, England. The grounds include a fine group of medieval outbuildings. It is a Grade I listed building.

Thomas Keble School is a mixed secondary school located in Eastcombe in the English county of Gloucestershire. The school is named after Thomas Keble, a Church of England clergyman who contributed four of the Tracts for the Times. Outside of the main building, there is a memorial tree with a plaque dedicated to the life of Thomas Keble. The plaque reads: "In memory of those who came before us, we honour you." The tree was planted by Julia Abbott on 18 August 1991, the plaque being added later that year. Known as Manor School until September 1990, Thomas Keble School was previously administered by Gloucestershire County Council, and became a specialist Technology College in September 2002. The school was awarded high performing specialist school status in 2006, enabling a second specialism in sport. Thomas Keble gained foundation school status in 2007 and the school was converted to academy status in August 2011. However the school continues to coordinate with Gloucestershire County Council for admissions. Thomas Keble School offers GCSEs, BTECs, OCR Nationals and ASDAN courses as programmes of study for pupils.

Strawberry Banks (grid reference SO910033) is a 5.06-hectare (12.5-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1993.This is a Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserve. The banks are thought to have once been used to grow strawberries, hence the name, and be the crash site of a Second World War German bomber. Strawberry Banks adjoins the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust Three Groves Wood nature reserve and lies on the west-facing slopes of a small valley in the Cotswolds between the villages of France Lynch and Oakridge. The site is roughly 5 km (3 miles) east of Stroud. Strawberry Banks and Three Groves Wood are part of a group of nature reserves in Stroud's Golden Valley.The site supports a large population of the marsh fritillary butterfly, and it is also one of the few sites in Britain at which the oil beetle Meloe rugosus occurs.

Snows Farm Nature Reserve (grid reference SO887081) is a 21.3-hectare (53-acre) nature reserve in Gloucestershire. The site is listed in the ‘Stroud District’ Local Plan, adopted November 2005, Appendix 6 (online for download) as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).The site is owned and managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. It was held under agreement from 1975, but was donated to the trust in 1989 by Mr. P. Duddridge.

Chalford is a large village in the Frome Valley of the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, England. It is to the southeast of Stroud about four miles (six kilometres) upstream. It gives its name to Chalford parish, which covers the villages of Chalford, Chalford Hill, France Lynch, Bussage and Brownshill, spread over two square miles (five square kilometres) of the Cotswold countryside. At this point the valley is also called the Golden Valley.

Three Groves Wood (grid reference SO912029) is a 3.3-hectare (8.2-acre) nature reserve in Gloucestershire. The site is listed in the ‘Stroud District’ Local Plan, adopted November 2005, Appendix 6 (online for download) as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).The site is owned and managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. It was given to the trust in 1986 (anonymous donor).

The Camp is a hamlet in the south of Gloucestershire, approximately 10 miles south of Cheltenham and 5 miles north-east of Stroud. It is in the parish of Miserden, a village about 2 miles east of The Camp. The village clusters around two roads: Calf Way and Honeycombe Road. Calf Way is thought to be a Roman road, presumably named for the cattle driven along it. Honeycombe Road leads to Honeycombe Farm, and then on to Miserden. How the village came to be known as The Camp is a matter of debate. Some sources claim that it is related to Neolithic camps – and there are the remains of Neolithic burial chambers close to the village. Others claim that it was a Civil War encampment. In either case, at some point before 1767, the village was known as Hazlehouse-Yate. Hazle House is a large house close to the village; "yate" means gate. One of Neolithic barrows was opened in around 1720, and contained the skulls and skeletons of eight bodies. Another barrow was opened a few years later – this one contained human bones and an urn, and was assumed to be Roman (the village is not far from Ermin Street, one of the great Roman roads). Over the years, there have been a number of businesses in the village, some serving locals, and others finding customers further afield: the New Inn was the village pub until the 20th century; the village had a bakery; a quarry supplied roof tiles to the region; there were a number of farms; a motorbike garage servicing classic bikes; and there is still a thriving riding school. The Camp currently has around 25 houses … of which 10 had been built by 1779.
