Gorton Locomotive Works

Openshaw is a suburb of Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, about three miles east of the Manchester city centre. Historically part of Lancashire, Openshaw was incorporated into the city of Manchester in 1890. Its name derives from the Old English Opinschawe, which means an open wood or coppice.During the Second Industrial Revolution, when Openshaw become an area of heavy industry, socialism and trade unionism flourished. In 1910 the Openshaw Socialists were formed; Keir Hardie, founder of the Labour Party, spoke at their inaugural meeting. Annie Lee became Manchester's first socialist woman alderman in 1936, having been secretary of the Openshaw Independent Labour Party since the 1890s. Following profound de-industrialisation. Openshaw is now a multicultural area with diverse shops and services opening reflecting the change in demographic.

Gorton railway station serves Gorton district of the city of Manchester, England. The station is on the Manchester-Glossop Line and is 2+1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) east of Manchester Piccadilly. It was opened by the Great Central Railway (GCR) on 25 August 1906 and replaced an earlier station that opened on the line on 23 May 1842. From 1 January 1923, the station was operated by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). The new station was on the busy Woodhead Route to Sheffield Victoria and had four platforms. The original station was situated 200 yards (180 m) west of the present station. From its opening, the new station was named Gorton and Openshaw, and it reverted to its original name by 1977. It was referred to as Openshaw in the 1964 song "Slow Train" by Flanders and Swann. Only two platforms now remain in use.

The Alhambra Theatre in Higher Openshaw, Manchester, England, was opened in 1910, part of the H. D. Moorhouse Theatre Circuit, but it had been converted to a cinema by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The cinema was converted into a bingo hall in the early 1960s. The auditorium was finally used as a sporting club, and what remained of the building was used as a restaurant, storage space and glass works. The Alhambra was demolished in 2009 to make way for a new Morrisons supermarket.

Gorton North is a defunct local government ward in the Gorton area of the City of Manchester. The population of Gorton North ward at the 2011 census was 16,440. Under boundary changes by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) the ward was abolished and replaced with the new electoral ward Gorton and Abbey Hey from May 2018.

The Peacock Mausoleum is a Victorian Gothic memorial to Richard Peacock (1820–1889), engineer and Liberal MP for Manchester, and to his son, Joseph Peacock. It is situated in the cemetery of Brookfield Unitarian Church, Gorton, Manchester. The mausoleum was designed by the prolific Manchester architect Thomas Worthington. It was listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England on 3 October 1974.Nikolaus Pevsner's The Buildings of England describes the memorial as "a large three-bay shrine of white stone. Steep roof and statues at the corners – an engineer, blacksmith, draughtsman and architect, supposedly a portrayal of Worthington himself." Peacock, a partner in the locomotive engineering firm of Beyer, Peacock & Company also paid for the construction of the Brookfield Unitarian Church.
