Paddington Academy

Maida Vale Studios is a complex of seven BBC sound studios, of which five are in regular use, in Delaware Road, Maida Vale, west London. It has been used to record thousands of classical music, popular music and drama sessions for BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 6 Music from 1946 to the present. On 30 October 2009, BBC Radio 1 celebrated 75 Years of Maida Vale by exclusively playing 75 tracks recorded at the studios over the years. Snow Patrol played a live set from the studio with Fearne Cotton to celebrate 75 years of live music from the venue. In June 2018, the BBC announced the closure of the studios. In May 2020, Historic England designated it as a Grade II Listed Building. The BBC plans to vacate the premises by 2025, moving into a new development which is part of the Olympic Park, offering high-tech facilities and two spaces for public concerts.

Elgin Avenue is a street in Maida Vale in London. Located in the City of Westminster, it runs east to west from the A5 road close to Maida Vale tube station west to the Maida Hill area where it meets the Harrow Road. Sutherland Avenue runs roughly parallel to the south and is connected to Elgin Avenue by Lauderdale Road. The road continues east of the A5 as Abercorn Place which runs through St. John's Wood. The area was built as part of the rapid expansion of London in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was laid out as part of a plan for the area by the architect George Gutch in 1827, who envisaged a series of long avenues. While isolated villas were built from the 1820s, it was not for several decades that the street was completed. It was known as Elgin Road until 1886, and takes its name from the Lord Elgin Arms public house. Later in the century many of the original villas were replaced by mansion blocks. In 1915 the new Maida Vale tube station was opened as part of an extension of the Bakerloo Line north from Paddington. It is located on the corner of the junction of Elgin Avenue and Randolph Avenue and is Grade II listed and was designed by Stanley Heaps. It was originally proposed to name the station Elgin Avenue, but Maida Vale was ultimately chosen to reflect the wider area.The artist Edward Ardizzone lived in the street from 1920 to 1972 and is now commemorated with a blue plaque. Artist and political activist Peter Kennard was born on Elgin Avenue in Maida Vale.

The London School of Journalism (LSJ) is an independent journalism school based in London, England, which offers qualifications in journalism, freelance journalism and creative writing. The LSJ provides both on-site and distance learning to its students, ranging from short courses to postgraduate diplomas. The school was founded in 1920 by Sir Max Pemberton.

Sutherland Avenue is a street in Maida Vale in London, England. Located in the City of Westminster on the northern edge of Little Venice. it is an avenue running east to west from the Edgware Road to Harrow Road. Along the route it is crossed or joined by Randolph Avenue, Warrington Crescent, Lauderdale Road, Castellian Road, Warwick Avenue and Shirland Road. Elgin Avenue runs directly parallel to the north. In common with much of the area, the street design was laid out by the architect George Gutch in the Regency era and built during the following decades. The builder Hugh Biers played a role in developing the new wealthy residential street. Originally it was two distinct roads Stranraer Place and Sutherland Gardens which were combined in 1887 to create the single Sutherland Avenue.Like much of the surrounding area, it had a considerable Jewish population by the late Victorian era which was served by the Synagogue in neighbouring Lauderdale Road from 1896. The Greek poet Andreas Kalvos lived in the street in the nineteenth century and is now commemorated by a blue plaque. The film director Val Guest was born in the street. The poet Eddie Linden published the poetry magazine, Aquarius, from his flat on the street.

St Mary Magdalene, Paddington, is a Grade I listed Anglican church at Rowington Close, London, dedicated to Jesus' companion, Mary Magdalene. The parish was established in 1865 and work on the church started in 1867. Although complete in 1872, a fire destroyed the brand new roof so the first Mass in the new building could not be celebrated until St Mary Magdalene's Day, 22 July 1873. The church was consecrated after completion of interior decoration on 21 October 1878. The architect was George Edmund Street, and this church is considered to be his masterpiece. It includes notable stained glass by Henry Holiday and a later crypt chapel by Ninian Comper. The painted ceiling of the nave, the work of Daniel Bell, was cleaned and restored during 2018–19, with the help of a grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund. With assistance from the Paddington Development Trust, an extension was also built, containing additional spaces and facilities intended for use by the wider local community.

Westminster Academy is an Academy (publicly funded, semi-independent secondary school) located in London, England. It is a co-educational school for pupils of 11+ years, and specialises in International Business and Enterprise. The school was created, along with nearby Paddington Academy, following the closure of North Westminster Community School.

Lauderdale Mansions South is a block of 142 apartments in Lauderdale Road, Maida Vale, London W9. Built in 1897, Lauderdale Mansions South was the first of a swathe of mansion flat buildings for the middle classes that spread across central Maida Vale in the 1897–1907 period. The building's freehold company (in which all flat owners have a share) is unusual in that it is believed to be the only one in the UK whose constitution specifies a ‘first-past-the-post’ secret ballot for electing directors, with any shareholder being entitled to stand for election.Lauderdale Mansions South is divided into 15 blocks, each with its own entrance hall leading to 8–14 flats. Behind the building lies a 1.5-acre (6,100 m2) communal garden in which there is also a meeting room for residents housed in a former Boiler House. The basement areas include storage units and bicycle storage areas. Most apartments in the building are 950 to 1,500 square feet (140 m2). The upper floor flats have balconies overlooking Lauderdale Road, while lower ground floor flats back on to the communal garden. For most of the 20th century the freehold of Lauderdale Mansions South was owned by the Church Commissioners, the property investment arm of the Church of England. But in 1989 the freehold was sold to the flat owners. The freehold company is Manyplans Ltd, a subsidiary of Lauderdale Mansions (South) Ltd. The articles of association are also unusual for companies of this type in that they specify that board meetings should be open to shareholder observers, and that board minutes should be made available to shareholders. Sir Alec Guinness, whose best-known screen roles included playing eight different characters in Kind Hearts and Coronets, Colonel Nicholson in The Bridge on the River Kwai and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy, was born in a ground-floor flat in the building on 2 April 1914. More recent former residents of Lauderdale Mansions South have included Kathryn Flett, Observer TV critic and star of the BBC’s Grumpy Old Women series, and Mary McCartney, celebrity photographer and daughter of Paul and Linda McCartney. In 2009, Lauderdale Mansions South was featured in Channel 4 television's The Home Show.

Paddington Recreation Ground is a park in Maida Vale, City of Westminster, just north of Paddington. Its 27-acre site is the largest area of parkland located entirely within the City of Westminster. It was the first park of its kind in London, having operated since 1888. Annually, it attracts over 1.5 million users, who visit the Recreation Ground for its green-space value. The area covered by the park has "Conservation Area" status. It was selected in 1995 by the LEU as a non-statutory Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).: 8 

Regent's Park and Kensington North was a constituency in Central and West London represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Paddington was a civil parish and metropolitan borough in London, England. It was an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex, governed by an administrative vestry. The parish was included in the area of responsibility of the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1855 and became part of the County of London in 1889. The parish of Paddington became a metropolitan borough in 1900, following the London Government Act 1899, with the parish vestry replaced by a borough council. In 1965 the borough was abolished and its former area became part of the City of Westminster in Greater London.

The Windsor Castle is a former public house on Harrow Road, Maida Vale, London. It was a seminal rock venue throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with notable early performances from The Rolling Stones, The Who and U2. Despite now being derelict, the building is a designated heritage asset.

Lauderdale Road is a street in the Maida Vale district of London. Located in the City of Westminster, it runs north westwards from Sutherland Avenue to Elgin Avenue. Its southern end also meets Warrington Crescent and Randolph Avenue at a roundabout. The street was built in 1875 and was named after a prominent Paddington resident the Earl of Lauderdale, an admiral in the Royal Navy. Built some time after the streets to the south of it were laid out, it was not until the late nineteenth century and the Edwardian era that the area was completed. It features large red brick mansion blocks with apartments, in contrast to the area further south which featured the white stucco terracing of the early-to-mid Victorian era. Typical of the style of the street, and surrounding area, is Lauderdale Mansions South. In 1896 the Lauderdale Road Synagogue was built in the street to serve the significant Jewish population in the area. It was constructed in the Neo-Byzantine style and is now Grade II listed.Among notable former residents are actor Alec Guinness and musician Tony Meehan.
