Aycliffe railway station

Aycliffe Village is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated immediately to the south of the town of Newton Aycliffe.

Aycliffe Stadium was a sports facility located in County Durham, England, on the southern edge of the Aycliffe Industrial Estate, which has Newton Aycliffe to the North and Aycliffe Village to the South. The stadium was originally used for greyhound racing and then speedway before stock car racing.

Brafferton is a village and civil parish in County Durham, England. It is administered as part of the borough of Darlington. The population of Brafferton Parish taken at the 2011 census was 154. It is situated between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe, a short distance from Coatham Mundeville. Brafferton itself has few amenities, but nearby is the Darlington town centre, a local public house - The Foresters Arms - and the Hall Garth Hotel. Brafferton is near the A1 junction 59. The Durham Ox was bred at Ketton Hall in Brafferton.

Coatham Mundeville is a village in the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated a short distance from Brafferton, on the A167 between Newton Aycliffe and Darlington.

ROF Aycliffe, was a Royal Ordnance Factory built on an 867-acre (3.51 km2) site off Heighington Lane, Aycliffe, County Durham, England during the early 1940s.

UTC South Durham is a University Technical College located in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. It opened in 2016 and caters for 14–19 year olds with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths. It is located on the Aycliffe Business Park site, in a purpose-built new building.The UTC is sponsored by the University of Sunderland, Gestamp and Hitachi.

Heighington is a railway station on the Tees Valley Line, which runs between Bishop Auckland and Saltburn via Darlington. The station, situated 5 miles 62 chains (9.3 km) north-west of Darlington, serves the villages of Aycliffe and Heighington in County Durham, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. The station is on the Bishop Line which is a community railway from Bishop Auckland to Darlington. It is somewhat unusual in that its platforms are staggered, sited either side of a level crossing. The station has kept its listed manual signal box (which supervises the aforementioned crossing, the connection into the Hitachi plant and the single line section south of here through to Darlington), but this had its semaphore signals replaced by colour lights when the connection into the Hitachi factory was installed and commissioned in November 2014.

Redcar Field is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Darlington district of County Durham, England. It is situated just north of Darlington, about 1 km south of the village of Coatham Mundeville. The site, which is one of the few spring-fed areas on the magnesian limestone of County Durham, has a variety of fen vegetation types such as are not found together elsewhere in the county, including the only example of fen-meadow in the region. The fen meadow, in which blunt-flowered rush, Juncus subnodulosus, is dominant, grades into open flushes. These are carpeted with fern-leaved hook-moss, Cratoneuron filicinum, curled hook-moss, Palustriella commutata, and pointed spear-moss, Calliergon cuspidatum, and support typical fen herbs such as marsh valerian, Valeriana dioica, and early marsh orchid, Dactylorhiza incarnata. Another, and more extensive, fen type is tall fen, dominated by common reed, Phragmites australis, and great willow herb, Epilobium hirsutum. On the edge of the tall fen, the locally scarce meadow rue, Thalictrum flavum, is plentiful. About one-quarter of the site is occupied by willow carr, dominated by crack willow, Salix fragilis, beneath which the field layer contains a mix of tall fen and woodland plants, the latter including wood avens, Geum rivale, male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas, and, at the edge of the carr, globe flower, Trollius europaeus.

Hitachi Newton Aycliffe (also known as Newton Aycliffe Manufacturing Facility) is a railway rolling stock assembly plant owned by Hitachi Rail Europe, situated in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, in the North East of England. Construction started in 2013 at a cost of £82 million, with train assembly commencing in 2015. It was the first factory that Hitachi built in Europe, as a result of it winning the Intercity Express Programme tender. Originally on opening, no actual manufacturing operations took place at the site; it assembled components built elsewhere into completed trains. However, for the later classes, some manufacturing took place on site. By October 2017, the plant employed over 1,000 members of staff.In December 2021, it was announced that the rolling stock for the HS2 line, would be a joint venture between Hitachi and Alstom.

The A167 and A167(M) is a road in North East England. It is partially a trunk road and partially a motorway, where it is commonly referred to as Newcastle Central Motorway. Most of the road’s route was formerly that of the A1, until it was re-routed with the opening of the A1(M) in the 1960s.

Beaumont Hill is a village in the borough of Darlington and the traditional and ceremonial counties of Durham in England, situated directly to the north of Darlington on the A167 road.

Harrowgate is a suburb of Darlington in the Borough of Darlington, County Durham, England. The area includes the villages of Beaumont Hill, the Harrowgate Village as well as Ashbrook and Harrowgate Hill with the latter the largest part of the area. The area is covered by the Harrowgate Hill Ward, the villages are in the Whessoe civil parish (the name is notable for its use as a name for the Whessoe company) and the rest is unparished. Before the ward boundary changes in 2015 was enclosed on two sides by railways — the East Coast Main Line to the east, and the Tees Valley Line to the west. The Ashbrook area, which lies to the east of the main line now also forms part of the ward. The ward extends as far south as Thompson Street and as far north as Beaumont Hill. The old ward population was 5,997 at the 2011 census and needed expanding to meet around 7,000.
