Avonbridge railway station

Avonbridge (Scottish Gaelic: Drochaid na h-Aibhne) is a small village which lies within the Falkirk council area of Scotland. The village is 4.8 miles (7.7 km) south-southeast of the town of Falkirk. Avonbridge sits just inside the council boundary line between Falkirk and West Lothian councils. The village lies at the junction of the B8028 and B825 roads and is a bridging point over the River Avon, hence the name Avonbridge. At the time of the 2011 census, a population of 652 residents was recorded.

Blackston Junction railway station served the area of Blackston, Falkirk, Scotland, from 1863 to 1963 on the Slamannan Railway.

Standburn is a small village which lies within the Falkirk council area in central Scotland. It is located 1.3 miles (2.1 km) south-west of Maddiston, 1.7 miles (2.7 km) north-east of Avonbridge and 4.0 miles (6.4 km) south east of Falkirk. The entire village is located along a section of the B825 road between Avonbridge and Loan. The United Kingdom Census 2001 reported the population as 149 residents, a figure almost unchanged from the census of 1991 Drumbowie Environment Action Group is a charitable organisation which owns Drumbowie Park to the north of Standburn, this community woodland is open to the public. Standburn was a mining community with several active pits until the 1950s. The pits were individually numbered and all prefixed by Gateside. The bings from the mining days can still be seen although the land has now been planted with trees and named Gateside Woodland.

California (Scottish Gaelic: Calafòrnia) is a former pit village in the Falkirk council area of Scotland. It lies between Shieldhill and Avonbridge on the uplands which form the southern edge of the council area. The population recorded in the United Kingdom 2001 census was 702, down from 747 in 1991.

Glenellrig railway station served the village of Slamannan, Falkirk, Scotland, from 1848 to 1850 on the Slamannan Railway.

Wallacestone is a village in the area of Falkirk, central Scotland. It lies 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-west of Polmont, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south-east of Falkirk and 1.0 mile (1.6 km) north-east of California. The population of Wallacestone was recorded as 746 residents at the time of the 2001 census.

Shieldhill is a village within the Falkirk council area in Central Scotland. The village is 2.0 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Falkirk, 2.4 miles (3.9 km) south-west of Polmont and 0.5 miles (0.8 km) north of the village of California. Shieldhill is divided into a few main parts: " The California end" and the old " scheme end " to the west, and the newer Bovis and the original old miners rows which have existed in some way for approximately 150 years. The main road through Shieldhill is the B8028 road between California and Glen Village and the B810 road from Reddingmuirhead. At the time of the 2001 census, Shieldhill had a population of 2,656 residents.

Reddingmuirhead is a village located in Stirlingshire, Falkirk council area, Central Scotland. A few hundred yards uphill from the village of Redding, it is between Shieldhill and Brightons. The village contains a large Co-operative Society building, the shops of which provide most everyday requirements, one small general store, and one licensed grocer who also looks after the post office, and a large secondary school Braes High. It was notable in recent times due to the success of its local Sunday football team, Blairlodge AFC, which competed in the Falkirk and District League.Reddingmuirhead is also the location of the Polmont Young Offenders Institution.

Westfield (Scottish Gaelic: an t-Achadh Siar) is a small village of around 180 houses located in the parish of Torphichen in West Lothian, Scotland.

The Polmont rail accident, also known as the Polmont rail disaster, occurred on 30 July 1984 to the west of Polmont, near Falkirk, in Scotland. A westbound push-pull express train travelling from Edinburgh to Glasgow struck a cow which had gained access to the track through a damaged fence from a field near Polmont railway station, causing all six carriages and the locomotive of the train to derail. 13 people were killed and 61 others were injured, 17 of them seriously. The accident led to a debate about the safety of push-pull trains on British Rail.

His Majesty's Young Offenders Institution Polmont is the largest young offender's institution in Scotland. HMP Polmont first opened as a Borstal in 1911 in the buildings of the former Blairlodge Academy. The Academy had been forced to close in 1908 due to financial difficulties and a subsequent outbreak of an infectious disease, and the Prison Commissioners bought the site in 1911.It is designed to hold up to 760 inmates between the ages of 16 and 21, although there have been several reports and complaints about the presence of inmates younger than 16. Living conditions have also been criticised, including an alleged insufficency of food and the outdated practice of slopping out.Notable inmates include murderer Luke Mitchell, and Chris Cunningham, star of BBC Scotland's The Scheme. More recently, the prison is home to Aaron Campbell, convicted of carrying out one instance of child abduction, rape and murder when he was 16.

The Redding pit disaster was a coal mining disaster in September 1923 when an inrush of water trapped 66 miners underground at a mine shaft in the Central Belt of Scotland, with 40 fatalities.
