Wildwood Preserve Metropark is a nature reserve and historic estate located in Sylvania Township, Ohio. Wildwood is the most-visited of the 19-park Metroparks Toledo district.Metroparks Toledo purchased the property in 1975 following a citizen-led effort to preserve the grounds of Stranleigh Estate. The Georgian colonial style house and surrounding buildings comprised the family residence of Champion spark plug magnate Robert A. Stranahan, Sr., his wife Paige, and their children, including professional golfer Frank Stranahan.Wildwood features one of the last remaining public, free-admission gardens designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman. The park also features the former Oak Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse built by the Sylvania Board of Education in 1897.

The R. A. Stranahan Arboretum 47 acres (190,000 m2) is located at 4131 Tantara Drive, Toledo, Ohio, about a 10-minute drive from the main campus of the University of Toledo. It contains 1,500 specimens of cultivated, mature trees from China, Serbia, Japan, and Norway, as well as North American varieties ranging from Bristlecone Pine to Buckeye. The Arboretum site includes cultivated ornamental trees, rolling lawns, natural woods, ponds, wetlands and a restored prairie, all located within the "Oak Openings" sand dune region. About one-quarter of the Arboretum is covered by forest. The older forest has not been cleared for over 150 years and has oaks as the dominant tree. Peaks of old sand dunes are visible beneath its undergrowth. The newer forest is 50 years old, with has red maple as the dominant tree. The Arboretum was donated to the University of Toledo in 1964 by the W. W. Knight family, in memory of Robert Stranahan.

The 1986 PGA Championship was the 68th PGA Championship, held August 7–11 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Bob Tway won his only major championship, two strokes ahead of runner-up Greg Norman, the 54-hole leader. Heavy rains on Sunday stopped play for the day in mid-afternoon. In the final group, Norman and Tway completed just one hole of their final round and resumed play on Monday afternoon.Norman started the round with a four-shot lead and held that margin through the front nine. After a double bogey at 11 and a bogey at 14, the two were tied. They halved the next three holes at par and were tied at the 72nd tee. Tway put his approach shot in a greenside bunker, while Norman was just off the green on the fringe, 25 feet (8 m) out. Tway improbably holed out for birdie and Norman's attempt to tie missed, as did his par-saving putt. Norman led all four majors in 1986 after the third round, but won only the Open.Entering the championship, Norman was the leading money winner on the PGA Tour in 1986, with Tway in second place.This was the fifth major championship at Inverness, which hosted the U.S. Open in 1920, 1931, 1957, and 1979, and was the first in which the winning score was under-par; the previous best was even-par in 1979 by Hale Irwin. The PGA Championship returned in 1993.

The 1931 U.S. Open was the 35th U.S. Open, held July 2–6 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Billy Burke won his only major title, defeating George Von Elm in a marathon 72-hole playoff, the longest in tournament history.Von Elm, the 1926 U.S. Amateur champion, held the 54-hole lead at 217 after rounds of 75-69-73. Burke, playing just ahead of Von Elm in the final round, carded a 73 and a 292 total. Von Elm bogeyed 12, 14, 15, and 16, and needed a birdie at 18 to force a 36-hole playoff on Sunday.In the playoff, Von Elm and Burke were still tied after 36 holes, with Von Elm making a birdie on the 36th to extend it. In the era prior to sudden-death, 36-hole playoffs were required to break ties, so another was held the following day. In the morning round, Von Elm shot a 76 and led by a stroke, but Burke took the lead late in the afternoon round at the 32nd and extended it to two strokes at the 34th. A bogey on the final hole narrowed Burke's victory margin to one stroke, 148 to Von Elm's 149. Burke reportedly smoked 32 cigars during the tournament, and quipped afterwards: "George Von Elm lost 15 pounds (7 kg). I gained three." Following this tournament, the USGA reduced the length of all future playoffs to 18 holes, which remained the format until 2018. A second playoff round was played in 1939 and 1946. Sudden-death after 18 holes was added in the 1950s, but was not needed until 1990, and was used again 1994 and 2008. Leo Diegel made a hole-in-one during the second round, only the third in U.S. Open history and first since 1922. He missed the playoff by two strokes and finished in third place. Low-amateur went to Philip Perkins, who finished in a tie for seventh. Three-time British Open champion Henry Cotton played the first of two U.S. Open appearances this year, missing the cut. Defending champion Bobby Jones retired from competition in 1930 and did not compete. This was the second U.S. Open at Inverness, which hosted eleven years earlier in 1920. It later hosted in 1957 and 1979, and the PGA Championship in 1986 and 1993.

The 1993 PGA Championship was the 75th PGA Championship, held August 12–15 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Paul Azinger won his only major title on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Greg Norman. Azinger birdied four of the last seven holes to get into the playoff. Norman, the 1993 Open champion, joined Craig Wood as the only players to lose playoffs in all four major championships. It was the fifth playoff under the sudden-death format at the PGA Championship, first used in 1977. Norman was attempting to become the first player to win the Open Championship and PGA Championship in the same year since Walter Hagen in 1924. It was accomplished the following year by Nick Price, and later by Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2006, Pádraig Harrington in 2008 and Rory McIlroy in 2014. It was the sixth major championship at Inverness, which hosted the PGA Championship in 1986 and four U.S. Opens (1920, 1931, 1957, and 1979). Norman was also the British Open champion and PGA runner-up in 1986, when Bob Tway holed out from a greenside bunker at the 72nd hole for birdie. Forced to sink his chip to tie, Norman ran it ten feet (3 m) past and bogeyed.Tom Watson, age 43, was in search of a PGA Championship win to complete a career grand slam. He was a stroke behind after 54 holes, but bogeyed three of the first five holes and finished four strokes back in fifth. Watson later had top ten finishes in 1994 and 2000, but never won the title.

The 1920 U.S. Open was the 24th U.S. Open, held August 12–13 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Isle of Jersey natives Harry Vardon and Ted Ray played in their first U.S. Open since their playoff loss to Francis Ouimet in 1913. The 50-year-old Vardon, the champion twenty years earlier in 1900, held a five-stroke lead with just five holes to play. He then proceeded to three-putt three holes in a row, then double-bogeyed the 17th after finding the water. He shot 42 (+6) on the second nine, giving him a 78 (+7) for the round and 296 total (+12), and finished in a tie for second, one stroke back. Ray also struggled in the final round, with four bogeys on the back nine. But he parred the 18th, giving him 295 total and a one-stroke victory over runners-up Vardon, Jock Hutchison, Leo Diegel, and Jack Burke Sr.This Open marked the first appearance by Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Tommy Armour, and Johnny Farrell. Between them, they won eight of the next twelve U.S. Opens. This Open returned to the two-day format, with the first two rounds played on the same day; the three-day schedule was permanently adopted for 1926 and the present four-day schedule was first used in 1965. At the age of 43 years and 138 days, Ray became the oldest U.S. Open champion, a record he held for 66 years, until Raymond Floyd, a few months older, won in 1986. Julius Boros was also 43 when he won in 1963. Hale Irwin set the current record in 1990 at age 45. This was the first of six major championships at Inverness, which later hosted the U.S. Open in 1931, 1957, and 1979. The PGA Championship was played at the course in 1986 and 1993.

The 1979 U.S. Open was the 79th U.S. Open, held June 14–17, at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Hale Irwin won his second U.S. Open title, two strokes ahead of former champions Jerry Pate and Gary Player.

The 1957 U.S. Open was the 57th U.S. Open, held June 12–15 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Dick Mayer defeated defending champion Cary Middlecoff in an 18-hole playoff to win his only major title.Amateur Billy Joe Patton was the 36-hole co-leader with Mayer, but fell back with consecutive 76s and tied for eighth. The 54-hole lead was held by Jimmy Demaret, age 47, attempting to become the oldest U.S. Open champion. Mayer was a shot back, while Middlecoff, Julius Boros, and Roberto De Vicenzo were two back.With temperatures soaring in the final round with high humidity, Demaret was five-over through eleven holes. He rebounded with three birdies on the back nine to post a 72 and a 283 total, a shot out of the playoff. Mayer carded a 70 and a 282 total, while Middlecoff birdied the last to force a playoff. The Sunday playoff turned out to be a one-sided affair, as Mayer shot 72 to Middlecoff's 79. Temperatures again approached 100 °F (38 °C) and only one birdie was carded.This U.S. Open witnessed the debut of 17-year-old amateur Jack Nicklaus, who had consecutive rounds of 80 and missed the cut. It was just the beginning for Nicklaus, as he won a record-tying four U.S. Open titles and a record 18 major championships. While Nicklaus was making his debut, three-time major winner Denny Shute was playing his last Open; he too missed the cut. Two-time champion Gene Sarazen, at 55 in his penultimate Open, also missed the cut. After receiving medical attention for a back ailment, four-time champion and pre-tournament favorite Ben Hogan withdrew prior to his first round on Thursday.The course was scheduled to play to a length of 6,961 yards (6,365 m), but heavy rains caused several new tee boxes to become unplayable and the course was shortened by about 100 yards (90 m).This was the third U.S. Open at Inverness, which hosted in 1920 and 1931. The U.S. Open returned in 1979 and the PGA Championship followed in 1986 and 1993.

Robert S. Rogers High School is located in west Toledo, Ohio, United States. It has been part of Toledo Public Schools since 1964, when Adams Township was annexed by the city. The school motto is "Writing success stories... one student at a time." As of 2008, with the exception of 2012-13, the school principal is Kelly Welch.

The 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship was a golf tournament contested from May 26 to May 30, 2009 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. It was the 71st NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The team championship was won by the Texas A&M Aggies who won their first national championship by defeating the Arkansas Razorbacks in the championship match play round 3–2. This was the first tournament to feature a match play playoff to determine the national champion. The individual national championship was won by Matt Hill from North Carolina State University.

Inverness Club is a private golf club in Toledo, Ohio. Opened in 1903, the club has hosted four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, two NCAA Men's Championships, and the Solheim Cup. Inverness is the only club to have hosted the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Open, and U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. From 1935 to 1954, it also hosted the Inverness Invitational Four-Ball. It is slated to host the 2027 U.S. Women's Open and the 2029 U.S. Amateur.Byron Nelson, who served as the club's head golf professional from 1940 to 1944, considered it his "home course." S.P. Jermain, the club's founder and first Board President, conceived the Ryder Cup. The championship course was designed by architect Donald Ross.

St. Ursula Academy is Toledo's oldest, fully accredited, all-female, Catholic, preparatory school helping girls in grades 6 to 12 for college entry, since 1854. St. Ursula's motto is "Soli Deo Gloria," meaning "For the Glory of God Alone."
