Cymmer (Welsh: Cymer) is a small village in the community of Cymer and Glyncorrwg, in Neath Port Talbot in Wales, set on a hillside in the Afan Valley near the confluence of the River Afan and the River Corrwg. In 2001, Cymmer had a population of 2,883.

Abercregan is a village in the community of Cymer and Glyncorrwg, in the Welsh county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Glamorgan. It is situated around 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north-east of Port Talbot and just west of Cymmer, and is also close to the River Afan. Abercregan was once a thriving mining community but since the decline of the British coal industry, much of the housing has been demolished and most of its inhabitants have moved to neighbouring villages. The 1980s and 1990s saw the closure of the village school, the boys club, post office and the last remaining shop 1989. The local authority decided to turn the school into a Field Study Centre, which was later closed and relocated to Margam Park. The building was demolished following the closure. Now a small village of around 30 houses, Abercregan is in surroundings which have returned to their former pre-industrial rural condition. Abercregan is within the boundaries of the Afan Forest Park which is a joint venture between Forest Enterprise and local businesses which provide for and promote green tourism in the area. Following campaigning by local residents, Abercregan is now home to the only designated village green in the Neath Port Talbot area. Abercregan United Football Club, is nicknamed 'The Shire'. The nickname was bestowed on the club by local celebrity Matthew ‘Joe’ Pitman and is a reference to the shire in Lord Of The Rings which he thought resembled the village. The club has a proud history winning many league titles and cups since its formation. The club folded at the end of the 2016–17 season but have since reformed and currently play in the Port Talbot and District Football League. Home matches were originally played on the Riverside Ground in Abercregan which was condemned by the local council in 2006. Home games are now played at the Red Field in Cymmer.The former football changing rooms in Abercregan, which had previously been the village chapel, was purchased and is now being used as a place of worship again by the Afan Christian Fellowship.

Ysgol Maesteg School is an English language comprehensive school situated in the town of Maesteg in the South Wales Valleys of south-eastern Wales. The former and more commonly used name of the school is Maesteg Comprehensive School, or Ysgol Gyfun Maesteg. Its uniform shows the name as Ysgol Maesteg. As of September 2017, Maesteg Comprehensive School introduced a mobile phone ban to prevent cyberbullying and changed the uniform. The school's old site was taken over by the newly established Welsh medium school, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, on 3 September 2008 and has recently been downgraded from being a green rated school down 2 spaces to an amber. The school was rated band 2 (one of the higher performing schools in Wales) after being recently upgraded from band 3 as part of the Welsh governments school banding system, with over 55% of its pupils living in the 20% most deprived areas of Wales. 42% of its students achieved 5 A*-C GCSEs including English or Welsh + Maths in 2010.As of 2020/2021, the school has 82.5% of students in the school on the ALN list. The school was originally a split site, with a site at Llwynderw, which has since been demolished and is now a residential estate.

Maesteg railway station is one of two railway stations that serves the town of Maesteg in Wales. The British Rail 1992 built station is located in the centre of the town, adjacent to the Asda Supermarket store and on former sidings 8+1⁄4 miles (13.3 km) north of Bridgend. Passenger services are operated by Transport for Wales.

Maesteg is a town and community in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. Maesteg lies at the northernmost end of the Llynfi Valley, close to the border with Neath Port Talbot. In 2011, Maesteg had a population of 20,612. The English translation of Maesteg is 'fair field'. Historically a part of Glamorgan, the growth of the town started with the opening of ironworks in the 1820s and 1830s. Once a coal mining area, the last pit closed in 1985. With the decline of the coal industry and, more recently, the closure of one large factory producing cosmetics and another manufacturing vehicle components, the valley has become a residential/dormitory area for the Port Talbot, Bridgend and Cardiff journey to work areas. 11% (1,867 out of 20,702) of the town's population speak Welsh with 27.9% of 3-15 year olds speaking the language. It is one of the few areas of Wales where the traditional Mari Lwyd is still celebrated during Christmas.The community of Maesteg had a population of 17,580 in the 2011 census and includes Nantyffyllon. The built-up area having a population of 21,000.
