Elemore Hall

Littletown is a village in the parish of Pittington, County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles to the east of Durham. The village was previously the site of the Lambton Colliery.

Dabble Bank is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the County Durham district of County Durham, England. It lies about 1 km west of the village of Haswell and about 9 km east of the city of Durham. The site is important for its communities of nationally scarce grassland on Magnesian Limestone and in particular for its unusual location, in a small valley cut into the limestone plateau. A feature of the site is grassland characterised by downy oat-grass, Avenula pubescens, this being a vegetation type which nationally has a scattered distribution on lowland limestones and which is rare in County Durham. Among the species found is the pyramidal orchid, Anacamptis pyramidalis, which is rare in the county.

Pig Hill is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the County Durham district of north-east County Durham, England, situated 1 km south of the village of Easington Lane. The steep hill slopes support an extensive area of primary magnesian limestone grassland in which blue moor-grass, Sesleria albicans, is abundant. The rich assemblage of grassland species includes a number of rare and local species, bird's-eye primrose, Primula farinosa, adder's-tongue fern, Ophioglossum vulgatum, lesser club-moss, Selaginella selaginoides, and grass of Parnassus, Parnassia palustris, as well as an inland colony of sea plantain, Plantago maritima. Notable among the fauna is the Durham Argus butterfly, Aricia artaxerxes salmacis, a form which is only found in the magnesian limestone areas of Durham.

High Moorsley is a small village 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west of Hetton-le-Hole in the City of Sunderland, north east England. It is the site of the first weather radar system in the north-east of England, officially opened in July 2009.High Moorsley Quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its Permian magnesian limestone formation.

Hetton railway station served the town of Hetton-le-Hole, Tyne and Wear, England, from 1837 to 1963 on the Durham and Sunderland Railway.

Crime Rigg and Sherburn Hill Quarries is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in County Durham, England. It lies about 1 km east of the village of Sherburn Hill and about 7 km east of the city of Durham. The site is a working quarry in which is exposed a sequence of Lower Permian Yellow Sands overlying Marl Slate and Lower Magnesian Limestone. The exposures of Permian sands exhibit complex cross-bedding that is believed to represent ancient seif dune deposits.

Hetton Academy (formerly Hetton School) is a coeducational secondary school located in Hetton-le-Hole in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England.Established in 1912, the school admits pupils mainly from Easington Lane Primary School, Eppleton Academy, Hetton Primary School and Hetton Lyons Primary School.A new school building was constructed on the same site and was completed in September 2016. The new building was officially opened by the local Member of Parliament, Bridget Phillipson, on 13 January 2017.Previously a community school administered by Sunderland City Council, in September 2022 Hetton School converted to academy status and was renamed Hetton Academy. The school is now sponsored by the Northern Education Trust.Hetton Academy offers GCSEs and Cambridge Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. Most graduating students go on to attend Headways Sixth Form, a sixth form provision offered by a consortium of secondary schools (including Hetton Academy) and Sunderland College.

Easington Lane is a village in the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough in the county of Tyne and Wear, North East England. Historically part of County Durham and located between Hetton-le-Hole, Seaham, Peterlee and Durham. It had a population of 4,044 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 7,193 at the 2011 Census.

The Hetton colliery railway was an 8-mile (13 km) long private railway opened in 1822 by the Hetton Coal Company at Hetton Lyons, County Durham, England. The Hetton was the first railway to be designed from the start to be operated without animal power, as well as being the first entirely new line to be developed by the pioneering railway engineer George Stephenson. As originally built, the Hetton colliery railway ran between Hetton Colliery, which was roughly two miles (3.2 km) south of Houghton-le-Spring, and a staithe (wharf) on the River Wear, from where the coal was conveyed further by boat. By its closure in 1959, it was recognised as being the oldest mineral railway in Great Britain.

Low Moorsley is a small village just outside Hetton-le-Hole in the City of Sunderland, north east England. It was the birthplace of serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton (1832–1873).

Sherburn Hill is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the east of Sherburn. From 1835 to 1965, the Sherburn Hill Colliery operated near the village. In 1851, the Ebenezer Primitive Methodist Church was established in Sherburn Hill. Since the merger with the nearby Bethel Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1968, the church has been called the Sherburn Hill Methodist Church. Sherburn Hill Colliery opened in 1835, owned then by the Earl of Durham. By the 1890s it was owned by Lambton Collieries Ltd, and the pit employed 300 men and boys, producing 400 tons of coal per day. By 1914 there were 1,260 people employed at the colliery (1,071 working below ground, and 189 on the surface). In 1923 the colliery came under the ownership of Dorman, Long & Co. Ltd. The colliery consistently employed over a thousand people during the 20th century up to 1964. Sherburn Hill Colliery closed on the 7th of August 1965.
