Netley Castle

Netley Abbey is a ruined late medieval monastery in the village of Netley near Southampton in Hampshire, England. The abbey was founded in 1239 as a house for monks of the austere Cistercian order. Despite royal patronage, Netley was never rich, produced no influential scholars nor churchmen, and its nearly 300-year history was quiet. The monks were best known to their neighbours for the generous hospitality they offered to travellers on land and sea. In 1536, Netley Abbey was seized by Henry VIII of England during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the buildings granted to William Paulet, a wealthy Tudor politician, who converted them into a mansion. The abbey was used as a country house until the beginning of the eighteenth century, after which it was abandoned and partially demolished for building materials. Subsequently the ruins became a tourist attraction, and provided inspiration to poets and artists of the Romantic movement. In the early twentieth century the site was given to the nation, and it is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument, cared for by English Heritage. The extensive remains consist of the church, cloister buildings, abbot's house, and fragments of the post-Dissolution mansion. Netley Abbey is one of the best preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in southern England.

Westwood Woodland Park is a 49.5-hectare (122-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Southampton in Hampshire. It is owned by Hampshire County Council and managed by Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council.In the Middle Ages this park was part of the estate of Netley Abbey. Its habitats include ancient woodland, with haze coppice and oaks, streams, ponds, marshes and grassland. There are several rare beetles, and birds include barn owls, skylarks, linnets and meadow pipits.

Netley, officially referred to as Netley Abbey, is a village on the south coast of Hampshire, England. It is situated to the south-east of the city of Southampton, and flanked on one side by the ruins of Netley Abbey and on the other by the Royal Victoria Country Park.

Weston Secondary School is a coeducational secondary school located in the Weston area of Southampton, in the English county of Hampshire.

It also includes the area that was previously the Barnfield Estate. Weston includes part of Mayfield Park, which was previously the Mayfield Estate. Weston is bounded by Woolston, Sholing, Netley and Southampton Water.

Hound is a village and civil parish in the borough of Eastleigh in southern Hampshire, England. The parish encompasses the villages of Netley, Butlocks Heath and Old Netley, and includes such landmarks as Netley Castle and Netley Abbey. In the 2001 census, the parish had a headcount of 6,846 living in 2,928 households.

Mayfield Park is a recreational area straddling Woolston and Weston in Southampton, England. The stream that runs through the park is the boundary between the two districts of modern Southampton.The park is owned and maintained by Southampton City Council. It was previously part of the Chamberlayne family's Weston Grove estate. Much of the rest of the Weston Grove estate has been used to develop the post-war suburb of Weston. Mayfield Park survives because it was split from the Weston Grove estate in the nineteenth century, becoming the Mayfield Estate.

Miller's Pond is an 8.1-hectare (20-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Southampton in Hampshire. It is owned and managed by Southampton City Council.The pond is managed for both angling and wildlife. There are also areas of acid grassland and semi-natural woodland.The pond is fed by springs and drains to the stream that runs through Mayfield Park.

Netley railway station is located near the village of Netley in Hampshire, England. The station is run by South Western Railway and is on the West Coastway Line. Near to the station is Royal Victoria Country Park. The line into the village from the west was built by the Southampton and Netley Railway, though by the time it was opened in March 1866 the aforementioned company had been taken over by the London and South Western Railway. The LSWR then extended the line east to Fareham in 1889. From 1900 a branch from the station conveyed patients to the nearby Netley Hospital. Heavy casualties during the First World War resulted in the station being for a time the third-busiest in Britain.

Grove Park Business and Enterprise College, previously known as Weston Park Boys' School, was a comprehensive school in east Southampton, Hampshire, in the south of England. The school was closed in 2008 to make way for Oasis Academy Mayfield. The most recent Ofsted inspection was on 17 May 2004.The inspectors found that "This is an improving school which provides a satisfactory quality of education. Pupils’ overall achievement is satisfactory. Teaching and learning are satisfactory. The school has had considerable difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff and this has been a barrier to enhancing pupils’ achievement further. The school provides satisfactory value for money."

Sholing railway station is a railway station serving the suburb of Sholing, on the edge of Southampton, England, operated by South Western Railway. It is the finishing point of the Itchen Way, a 32-mile long-distance footpath.

Woolston School Language College was a secondary comprehensive school in Southampton, Hampshire, in southern England. The last Ofsted inspection was on 10 October 2006. The school was a Specialist Language College for students that were 11 to 16 years old. There were around 770 pupils enrolled in the school at the time of closure. As part of Southampton City Council's review of secondary schooling program called Learning Futures, the school closed in July 2008. It merged with Grove Park Business and Enterprise College in September 2008 to become Oasis Academy Mayfield with the Woolston site finally closing in 2011, and the site being handed back to the Southampton City Council. The new building was completed in 2012, with the first academic commencing 20 February 2012.
