Cwmfelinfach is a small village located in the Sirhowy valley of south-east Wales. It is part of the district of Caerphilly within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. It is located north of Wattsville, about 5 miles north of the nearest town Risca, and south of Blackwood. To the east the valley is bordered by the hills of Pen-y-Trwyn (1,028 ft / 313 m). To the west is Mynydd y Grug (1,132 ft / 345 m). Cwmfelinfach can be translated from Welsh as "valley of the little mill".

Wyllie Colliery was located in the Sirhowy Valley, South Wales. The coal mine was sunk by the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company and opened in 1926. The colliery was named after a director of the company, Alexander Wyllie. Wyllie village was built to house many of the miners working at the pit. There were two shafts, North and South, both 636 yd (582 m) deep.The colliery remained open for only 42 years before closing in 1968.

Mynydd y Grug is a hill lying just west of the village of Cwmfelinfach and about 4 km to the northeast of Caerphilly in Caerphilly county borough in South Wales. Its summit was formerly at a height of around 358 m, but since the top has been covered by a large spoil heap and landscaped its height has now increased to 375 m, though some authorities take other values for the summit height. A number of ancient cairns are found along its edge overlooking the Sirhowy Valley, the slopes up from which are largely wooded.

Gelligroes Mill is a water-powered corn mill in Pontllanfraith, Caerphilly county borough, South Wales, designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1962. The mill is equipped with an overshot wheel with a cast iron frame and wooden buckets. When fully operational, it contained two pairs of rotating stones to grind barley and wheat. It was built around 1625 and was much altered during its working life. It is believed to have been the last mill operating commercially in Monmouthshire, eventually falling into disuse in the late 1980s.As mining developed and farming declined, the business adapted to changing needs. In 1874 the owners became suppliers of seed and animal feed to smallholders, and in the 1900s Artie Moore and his brother, who were local technological pioneers, installed a generator powered by the mill wheel to charge batteries for farmers in advance of the extension of mains electricity to the area.Moore's self-built wireless receiver at the mill picked up the Italian government's declaration of war on Libya in 1911 and RMS Titanic's distress call in 1912.As of 2000, the mill is occupied by royal candlemaker David Constable.

Nine Mile Point colliery was a coal mine at Cwmfelinfach in the South Wales Valleys, originally known as "Coronation Colliery", and constructed between 1902 and 1905. The deepest shaft was 1,176 feet deep. Seven men were killed on 13 August 1904 during the establishment of the mine. It was renamed Nine Mile Point as that was the distance of the tramroad from the edge of Lord Tredegar's boundary in Newport to the colliery. At its peak it employed 2,105 men, who lived mainly in the surrounding villages of Wattsville and Cwmfelinfach. In 1935, 164 men "stayed down" in a "sit in" protest, the first ever in the South Wales coalfield, over the use of scab labour. In 1929 riots broke out at the colliery. The reasons for the riot were to be found in the employment of blackleg labour, with more than 700 villagers and miners rioting at the time, taking several days for police to disperse and maintain control. The colliery closed in 1964.

Islwyn (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈɪslʊɨn]) is a constituency in Wales represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The area, historically known for coal-mining, has voted for Labour Party candidates since it was created effective at the 1983 general election. Islwyn's first Member of Parliament (MP) was Neil Kinnock, who represented it until he resigned from Parliament in 1995. Kinnock also served as Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1983 until 1992. The constituency's current MP is Chris Evans, first elected at the 2010 general election.

Pontllanfraith (Welsh: Pontllanfraith [ˌpɔntɬanˈvraiθ]) is a large village and community located in the Sirhowy Valley in Caerphilly County Borough, Wales, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. It is situated adjacent to the town of Blackwood, with the Sirhowy River passing through both locations. The village includes the communities of the Penllwyn, Springfield and The Bryn. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 8,552.
