1950 PGA Championship

Scioto Country Club, is a private country club and golf course in the central United States, located in Upper Arlington, Ohio, a suburb northwest of Columbus. It hosted the U.S. Senior Open in August 2016.

The 1926 U.S. Open was the 30th U.S. Open, held July 8–10 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Noted amateur Bobby Jones, winner of the British Open two weeks earlier, won the second of his four U.S. Opens, one stroke ahead of runner-up Joe Turnesa.After rounds of 70-79-71, Jones was three strokes behind third round leader Turnesa, who unraveled on the last nine on Saturday afternoon, with five bogeys in six holes. He managed to birdie the final hole for a 77 and 294 total for solo second (and the winner's share of the purse). Jones got off to a slow start, with bogeys at three of his first five holes, then birdied the 7th and ran off a streak of nine consecutive fours. Needing a par on the par-5 18th to tie (and force a playoff round), Jones hit a 310-yard (283 m) tee shot, then followed with an approach to the green, leaving 15 feet (4.5 m) for eagle. Two-putting for birdie, Jones carded a one-over 73 to best Turnesa by a stroke. Bill Mehlhorn opened with 68 on Thursday, and led after both of the first two rounds, but was ten over par on Saturday and was four strokes back, in a four-way tie for third.Jones became the first player to win the U.S. Open and British Open in the same year, and he won both again four years later in 1930, during his grand slam year. Later double Open winners were Gene Sarazen (1932), Ben Hogan (1953), Lee Trevino (1971), Tom Watson (1982), and Tiger Woods (2000). While Turnesa never won a major, he did finish second twice and his brother Jim won the PGA Championship in 1952. Another brother, Willie, won the U.S. Amateur twice and the British Amateur once. In total, eight Turnesa brothers played on the PGA Tour. This was also the first year since 1919 that the tournament was extended to three days, because of the number of entries and the size of the gallery. The first two rounds were now played over two days, Thursday and Friday, with a 36-hole cut. The final two rounds continued to be played on one day, Saturday. This format continued through 1964, except for the following year in 1927, when it was held Tuesday through Thursday (with a Friday playoff). The final round in 1959 was on Sunday due to weather delays. Scioto was only ten years old at the time, and its club pro was George Sargent, the 1909 champion, who did not compete. It later hosted the Ryder Cup in 1931 and the PGA Championship in 1950. Scioto is also noteworthy as the club where Jack Nicklaus learned to play as a youth in the 1950s, under the tutelage of Jack Grout.

The 3rd Ryder Cup Matches were held June 26–27, 1931 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The United States team won the competition by a score of 9 to 3 points. The course was the venue for U.S. Open in 1926, won by amateur Bobby Jones, the second of his four titles. It later hosted the PGA Championship in 1950. Scioto is also noteworthy as the club where Jack Nicklaus learned to play as a youth in the 1950s.

Shrum Mound is a Native American burial mound in Campbell Memorial Park in Columbus, Ohio. The mound was created around 2,000 years ago by the Pre-Columbian Native American Adena culture. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.Shrum Mound is named after the family whose farm once included the land on which the mound is located. Ohio History Connection is the current owner of the mound after receiving the property as a donation from the late Ohio governor James E. Campbell. Shrum Mound is located within Campbell Park, which is named after James E. Campbell. In 2015, the Ohio History Connection removed the 18 or so trees located on top of the mound, citing preservation as the reason. One concern was the possibility of a strong storm knocking down a tree and causing damage to the mound.

Free online access to these materials via the UA Archives website is provided in accordance with the Library's mission to help the community explore Upper Arlington's heritage and grow through a lifetime of learning.Through the UA Archives, the Library cultivates ongoing partnerships with the Upper Arlington Historical Society, the City of Upper Arlington, community organizations, and individuals to digitize items of historical interest and make them available to the public. By working with the Historical Society and other community groups, the UA Archives digital library initiative supports the goal of preserving Upper Arlington's history as well as the Upper Arlington Historic District's listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jones Middle School is one of two middle schools in the Upper Arlington City School District, in Upper Arlington, Ohio. The school is located in the center of the Upper Arlington Historic District, at the end of the Mallway.

Quarry Trails Metro Park is a 220-acre (89 ha) metropolitan park in Columbus, Ohio, owned and operated by Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks. The park opened on November 30, 2021, as Central Ohio's 20th metro park. Portions of the park remained under construction, although 200 acres opened, including a 25-foot waterfall, trails, boardwalks, and a zipline.The park still borders active portions of the Marble Cliff Quarry; other portions were sold for housing and mixed-use developments. Marble Cliff was formerly the largest quarry in the United States, the source for limestone used in the Ohio Statehouse and Ohio Stadium, and was the workplace for many Italian immigrants who settled in the surrounding area.Around March 2022, construction of a rock-climbing wall began at the park, to be 160 feet tall and about 1/2-mile wide, utilizing stones leftover from the quarry site. Designed by Via Ferrata Works, it will be the first urban via ferrata in the United States.

Upper Arlington, often known by its initials U.A., is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States, on the northwest side of the Columbus metropolitan area. The Old Arlington neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As of 2020, the population was 36,800.

Marble Cliff is a village in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 634 at the 2020 census. Marble Cliff was one of the first suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, settled as a community in 1890 and incorporated as the "Hamlet of Marble Cliff" in 1901. It took its name from the Marble Cliff Quarry Co. (still in use today), and at this time stretched all the way from the Scioto River to the Olentangy River. In 1902, it detached all land but its present area, and the area that separated became Grandview Heights in 1906. The village was named "Arlington" for a short time, which led its new neighbor to the north, incorporated in 1918, to name itself Upper Arlington. Marble Cliff is bordered by the cities of Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights, and Columbus. Most of the village's public services are provided by contract with Grandview Heights, including police and fire, and it is included in the Grandview Heights School District and public library system.

Griggs Dam is located within the Columbus, Ohio city limits, on the Scioto River near Upper Arlington, Ohio, in Franklin County. The dam forms Griggs Reservoir, which is a major source of drinking water for the city of Columbus. Named after the city's chief engineer, Julian Griggs, the dam was completed in 1905 at a cost of $700,000 and was the first major reservoir in the Columbus area. For 20 years, it served as the only reservoir serving the city of Columbus' drinking water needs. Griggs Dam is a gravity dam with a 500-foot-long (150 m) curved concrete spillway. Its height is only 35 feet (11 m), but it forms a reservoir almost 6 miles (9.7 km) long with a 1,200,000,000-US-gallon (4.5×109 l) capacity. US Route 33 runs along the East side of the dam, providing access to the dam and recreation area on both the upstream and downstream sides of the dam. Approximately 10 miles (16 km) upstream of Griggs Dam is the slightly larger O'Shaughnessy Dam, which is also owned and operated by the city of Columbus. Together, the two reservoirs have a capacity of 8 billion US gallons (30,000,000 m3). Due to the arrangement of the two dams' reservoirs, Griggs reservoir is often able to be kept full during the dry summer months by first releasing water from O'Shaughnessy reservoir during times of need. By only using Griggs reservoir's capacity during times of extreme need when O'Shaughnessy is at its minimum pool level, Columbus residents are able to use the full acreage of the reservoir for recreation during the summer.

Upper Arlington High School is the sole high school in the Upper Arlington City School District in Upper Arlington, Ohio, a northwest suburb of Columbus, Ohio. It receives students from Jones Middle School and Hastings Middle School. The current principal of the high school is Mr. Andrew Theado. The mascot is a golden bear.

Kingsdale Shopping Center, also known as Kingsdale, Kingsdale Center, and Kingsdale Mall, is a large, mixed-use shopping center in Upper Arlington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. It features a Giant Eagle Market District supermarket. Built in 1959, the shopping center covers 38 acres between Tremont Road and Northwest Boulevard. It is the location where Les Wexner opened his first Limited store. It once fell into disrepair, but has since been completely remodeled and now serves as a popular gathering place for the city's residents.
