The Southwest Mountains of Virginia are a mountain range centered on Charlottesville, parallel to and geologically associated with the Blue Ridge Mountains, which lie about 30 miles (50 km) to the west. Some of the more prominent peaks include Carters Mountain, Fan Mountain, Brush Mountain, Peters Mountain, Walton's Mountain, and Hightop Mountain.

Stony Point is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia. The region acknowledged as Stony Point includes the historical villages of Proffit and Rosena. The physical core of Stony Point is the Stony Point Volunteer Fire Company, Stony Point Elementary School, and several dozen surrounding homes. A general store is the sole public service. The nearest population centers of any size are Barboursville and Charlottesville, the county seat. A general store has long operated at the intersection of Stony Point Road (State Route 20) and Turkey Sag Road (Secondary Route 640), one of the two roads leading east over the Southwest Mountains from Stony Point. "Stony Point Market" is the name of the store currently located there; prior incarnations, in the latter half of the twentieth century, were "Bobby's" and "Bell's Store." The earliest known general store at that location was the one owned and operated by Colonel Nimrod Branham, a member of the House of Delegates, which opened in 1797.

Southwest Mountains Rural Historic District is a national historic district located near Keswick, Albemarle County, Virginia. The district encompasses 854 contributing buildings, 73 contributing sites, 30 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object. It includes a variety of large farms, historic villages, and crossroads communities. The area is known primarily for its large and imposing Federal, Greek Revival, and Georgian Revival plantation houses and country estates. It features a broad range of architecture—mainly domestic and farm-related—from the late 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Castle Hill (Virginia) is an historic, privately owned, 600-acre (243 ha) plantation located at the foot of the Southwest Mountains in Albemarle County, Virginia, near Monticello and the city of Charlottesville, and is recognized by the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Castle Hill was the home of Dr. Thomas Walker (1715–1794) and his wife, Mildred Thornton Meriwether (widow of Nicholas Meriwether III). Walker was a close friend and the physician of Peter Jefferson, and later the guardian of young Thomas Jefferson after his father's death.

Grace Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church located at 5607 Gordonsville Road in Keswick, Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. The Gothic Revival building was designed by architect William Strickland in 1847. It is the only known work of Strickland in Virginia. The interior was rebuilt after a fire in 1895."Both the church and the hunt club have a long history in Keswick. The congregation dates back to 1745 as one of the first six churches in the Virginia colony back when the Church of England was the official state-sanctioned religion. The original church was replaced with a new building in 1855 but a fire two decades later left only the tower and walls standing. Those were incorporated into the current church when it was rebuilt at the site north of Cismont on Route 231. The church’s 1,575-pound bell was salvaged and is still in use. In fact, it will ring 10 times at 9:45 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day to announce the 10 a.m. prayer service, calling the congregation, hunters, steeds and dogs together."It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 21, 1976.

Cismont is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia.Castle Hill and Grace Episcopal Church are listed the National Register of Historic Places.Zion Hill Baptist is a historically Black Church in Cismont. In December 1974, Dr. R. A. Johnson was pastor.

The Proffit Historic District is a national historic district located at Proffit, Albemarle County, Virginia. It encompasses 26 contributing buildings and 3 contributing sites in the historic center of Proffit. Notable buildings and sites includes Evergreen Baptist Church, the Proffit Station Master's House, remains of the first Proffit Post Office, the Proffit Road Bridge, and several houses built by African-American families as far back as the 1880s.Proffit's history dates back to the 1870s when two former slaves, John Coles and Benjamin Brown, purchased some land from former slaveholder W.G. Carr. In 1876 Ned Brown purchased seventy-five acres in the area as well. Its settlement began and the community thrived. Proffit is noted as one of the few African American communities in Albemarle County to survive after the American Civil War. Today it is a quiet residential area whose backbone is the Evergreen Baptist Church. The Church was built in 1891 by its first pastor, Reverend D.L. Gofney, and continues to be significantly involved in this historic community today. The historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Proffit is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia. There is no commercial activity, with only houses lining the road and a bridge under which Norfolk Southern's Piedmont Division, Washington District line runs. It is recognized as a Virginia Landmark and the Proffit Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.Shortly after the Civil War the village was populated entirely by African Americans, when it was known as Egypt, and then as Bethel. It became known as Proffit when the railroad line went through, named for the man who bought the right of way for the line. As it became a minor commercial hub, the population gradually became more caucasian. By the late 1920s there were only 15-20 African American families remaining in Proffit.In 1974, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Tribune covered the Proffit Area News. The paper notes Evergreen Baptist Church as part of the community, with Rev. Blakely presiding. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville was also noted as hosting the Thanksgiving Union Worship Service with Rev. L.S. Ward, pastor of Chatman Grove Baptist Church, Eastham delivering the sermon. Other congregations joining this service were Evergreen at Proffit and Free Union of Stony Point. The Union Christmas service was planned to be at Evergreen Baptist that year. The historian, Claude Hall, author of Abel Parker Upshur, was born in Proffit, and procured three degrees from the University of Virginia.

Eastham is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Woodburn, also known as Mundy House, is a historic home and farm complex located near Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia. The original section of the house, built about 1821, consists of a two-story, brick hall and parlor plan Federal style dwelling. It has one-story frame additions to the rear and a skillfully attached 1+1⁄2-story frame wing built in 1983. Also on the property is the Mundy family cemetery.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
